| How to write lyrics?
I think i may have asked this a while ago and accidentally deleted the list. Advice? I play in a punk band right now, and I need ideas, since I've got the music part down (and actually have ideas of branching out into other genres once we've started making music similar to what we cover, which is like anti flag and stuff). Any ideas are appreciated! List is influences on my group | 1 | | Green Day Kerplunk
This is a really compact record. We're aiming for something like that. Plus, we play in Eb tuning too, and I sound kinda like Billie from this album | 2 | | Billy Talent Billy Talent
Similar dual vocals. Me and my bassist would plan to do the trade off thing in the choruses. | 3 | | The Cure Boys Don't Cry
The basslines here are really cool. Maybe bringing them out would be a fun idea. And flanging the guitar might be an interesting addition as well. | 4 | | Anti-Flag For Blood and Empire
We're planning to tackle similar lyrical themes, while pointing out everything we see wrong with the world (which is a lot). | 5 | | Wire Pink Flag
Short songs! People get bored quickly, so when one song loses interest, we'll just switch to a different one! | |

01.07.16 | Aiming for a compact record with duel vocals, bass lines, lyrical themes of frustration all rolled into short songs with a view to branching into different genres.

01.08.16 | Tonnes of great advice here already but here's some actual tips (keeping in mind this is just stuff I do so completley subjective):
If you think of a line or phrase during the day, write it down in your phones 'notes' or equivalent, that's helped me remember some cool stuff and months later I can connect the ones that share themes, change stuff up etc.
Pick a topic that you're interested in or inspired by and try to describe the sensations of what you're thinking of, rather than just explaining it. What I mean is not to necessarily rely heavily on metaphors but still don't explicitly be obvious with what you're saying, unless it helps with the intensity or something. Elude to it/strongly hint at it.
Influences. I'm not talking about other musicians here either (necessarily) but I really like lyrics that reference classic literature, or kinda nod at it. Maybe just a line or two here or there if the theme fits, just something I personally enjoy that I try to add to my own writing.
Stick to your theme more or less from line to line, it's really annoying (for me) reading lyrics that jump all over the place and are basically just a collection of interesting one liners that don't connect. Have someone else read them and give feedback.
There ya go, hope that helps a bit. Not really so much advice as it is my own methods for writing creatively but there it is. | WilhelmBlack
01.08.16 | I write lyrics like poetry, I hate choruses unless I feel like it could be poppy. I am more influenced by Gothic Trilogy Cure. | CaimanJesus

01.08.16 | 1. Read a lot, once you get some inspiration, your brain will have the tools to convey it.
2. Avoid politically-charged lyrics. They're not inherently bad, but for some reason hardly anyone can pull it off. If you gonna' do it, try to be not as specific, be vague and deal with fundamentals pls, don't just preach >. | ZombicidalMan
01.08.16 | just yell about something that makes you mad | CaimanJesus

"Band will be hopeless"
probably. we need better ideas lol
Thanks for the feedback! All of this was pretty helpful. | DinosaurJones
01.08.16 | I gave up on writing lyrics. I don't really sing, so I just prefer to stick with writing the music. I just do backup vox every so often.
EDIT: Because I had such a hard time writing lyrics, really. | onionbubs
01.08.16 | Generally when i write music, it doesnt sound like either of the 5 bands listed, but my two friends in my band don't really dig the stuff i write, so we stick to more basic stuff like this.
Anti-Flag and Green Day stuff is really easy to write, it's just not as fun as writing more progressive heavier stuff or dark atmospheric cure-esque stuff. | OwMySnauze
01.08.16 | Write in a Mess style. | YetAnotherBrick
01.08.16 | #1: start with an image. and with this kind of music, you can't go wrong with an inherently satirical perspective. take "I Kill Children" by the Dead Kennedys or "Suburban Home" by the Descendents.
#2: make sure every line has an irony. if you think about it, this is really the only thing all purposefully written lyrics have in common. every line, no matter how short or sparse or abstract, contains an image of something looking different than it started.
#3: love is all you need. some with vastly different philosophies might use other conclusions for the ends of their songs, but this one always works for me. and also for the Beatles. and Radiohead. The Beach Boys. Modest Mouse. etc.
have a good day and good luck in your noble pursuit man | treeqt.
01.08.16 | >you need to use words and sentences
