Definitive Deftones ranking (Trust me)

A huge fuck you to this website for crashing on me and fucking up my write-ups. I only managed to save the write-ups to the top 4 albums, only because I had them written separately. In hindsight I should have known this would have happened, but I'm not wasting another hour of my life to write this all over again, sorry. I'll only offer brief remarks for the rest.

Gore

Still a 3. Not a horrible album by all means, but very underwhelming.

Best Songs: Acid Hologram, Doomed User, (L)MIRL
Worst Song: Gore

Ohms

After careful reevaluation this, unfortunately, together with Gore, signifies a more serious artistic decline of the band that I was so wary of pre-Gore. Both albums bring nothing new to the table, the ideas and elements contained have been done considerably better in previous albums. The sounds of a band that is looking for its identity.

And please for the love of GOD Stephen, no one wants to hear anymore of those plain thick ass chugging riffs on your 48574385734 string guitar.

Best Songs: Ceremony, This Link is Dead, Error
Worst Song: Pompeji

Adrenaline

Very underrated album. I had a whole write-up explaining why this album rules, but considering it's now lost, you'll just have to trust me on this one. Haunted by nu-metal associations as well as assumptions of a lack of maturity (both of which ought to be disregarded), this album is probably the most underrated in Deftones' discography but the truth is it has the iconic Deftones grooves and raw energy that made them burst out on the scene in the first place.

Best Songs: Nosebleed, One Weak, Root
Worst Song: 7 Words

Diamond Eyes

Very polished and laid-back, but lack of variation makes it falter at times. Still, Deftones at their sexiest.

Best Songs: Prince, Beauty School, Risk
Worst Song: You've Seen The Butcher (soo boring)

Koi No Yokan

The most ethereal and star-gazing Deftones album, there is very little to critique here.

Best Songs: Leathers, Goon Squad, Poltergeist
Worst Song: Swerve City

White Pony

Ah yes, the critically acclaimed masterpiece and the sworn-by number one Deftones album. Well not quite so much. It was a very difficult choice between this and ATF for #3, but in the end I just like ATF that much better than White Pony. There is very little to say that hasn't already been said as to what makes this a landmark album for the band, I would rather focus on the reason as to why it is so relatively low in my ranking. For me, WP is simply not as consistent as its predecessor. In some ways it perfects the things that ATF achieved in its wake, but it falters somewhere along the way (more specifically it's middle section). This has all the iconic Deftones' grooves similar to ATF, but whereas ATF is great from the front to the back, this album loses some steam in the middle. The peaks on this however, are some of the best Deftones has ever had to offer bar SNW. (oops spoiler alert)

Best Songs: Feiticeira, Digital Bath, Korea
Worst Song: Elite

Around the Fur

This will prove to be a controversial choice for sure, but this album just fucking rules. Front to the back, Abe's rhytms and fills, Steph's groovy riffs, Chino's signature moaning and screaming and Chi's reggae ass bass lines just make this album a delight. Deftones' first 3 albums have a certain groove to them that in my opinion gets mostly lost from s/t onwards, not to speak to the quality of the proceeding 6 albums (2 of them are in my top 2 after all), but stylistically Deftones was at its most captivating and head-boping in their early era and nowhere is it more emblematic than on ATF here. It also contains some of Deftones' best tracks and is a very consistent effort as I've already outlined. It is still slightly haunted by that nu-metal tag, which makes some people wary of ranking it higher on their lists in my opinion, but it fully deserves to be in the upper section of their discography at the very least.
Best Songs: My Own Summer, Be Quiet and Drive, Mascara
Worst: Lotion

Deftones

Might be the single most controversial choice here, but yet again this is just a banging record. This is Deftones at their most personal. Whereas DE deals with suffering by essentially avoiding it and takes a trip to a very seductive wonderland, this album wears its anguish on its sleeves. The restlessness and torment arising from the band's inner conflicts and their personal lives shines bright here and throughout the album there pervades a sense of dread and melancholy that scarcely offers any glimpses of hope for the entire runtime. Musically, this is aptly Deftones' most aggressive and heaviest album. Even gleaming contemplations such as Minerva are underlined by a heavy distorted wall of sound that keeps the listener constantly on edge. The album does have a weak spot or two, but as an experience it is unmatched within Deftones' discography.
Best Songs: Battle-Axe, WGTB, Minerva (Hon. mention: Lovers. WTH, why is this song not ON here bois?)
Worst Song: Lucky You

Saturday Night Wrist

Finally, the real force majeure, the biggest x-factor, the "je ne sais quoi" of the Deftones discography. Very disappointing end to an adventurous list such as this one, I know, but as popular as this choice seems to be in recent times it has good reason for being so, as it is de facto the band's masterpiece. Upon listening to this album, one has to pinch himself a few times, in order to assure oneself that he is not indeed dreaming. SNW has a sublime beauty to it that is very hard to put into words beyond reiterating the same cliched epithets that describe an other-worldly offering. Yet I am afraid it is all true and no words can do justice to the unearthly atmosphere that the band can elicit with such seemingly relative ease on this record.

Saturday Night Wrist

The melancholy present on S/T is still rampant, yet dreams offer themselves as a divine escape from the afflictions of life. The serene-like quality of the album found in songs like Beware and Cherry Waves is rudely interrupted by bursts of unrelenting hostility in Rats! and Combat, only to be yet again lulled into a state of ataraxia by the closing notes of Riviere. A masterful triumph in atmospheric rendition, Saturday Night Wrist can proudly proclaim itself as Deftones' crowning achievement.

Best Songs: Hole in The Earth, Beware, Cherry Waves, Kimdracula, Xerces
Worst Songs: None (yes, not even Pink Cellphone)
