Leviathan (band) ranked

Just as the title says. Wrest da gawd.
1Leviathan
The Tenth Sub Level of Suicide

1. After spending years releasing demos, Leviathan finally dropped this gem. Early on in his full length career, Wrest found the perfect blend of atmosphere and throat ripping black metal. There is no better example of this than on the masterful title track, which features eight minutes of breakneck speed black metal, followed by seven minutes, of a slower and more withdrawn Leviathan. This includes but isn't limited to some industrialized drum sounds and slow paced keyboards over some melodic riffing. Nostalgically, this was one of the first black metal albums I heard and it remains top tier for me. Also, it features some of the most cohesive bass work I've ever heard in the genre.
2Leviathan
Scar Sighted

After years of controversy and the often over looked TTTW record, Wrest channeled everything that made his work great in the past, polished it with improved production, more refined song writing and released his most diverse record. Tracks like The Smoke of Their Torment show Wrest as angry as ever and not afraid to go outside of the typical black metal sound to write a quality song. Yet on the other hand, songs like Dawn Vibration and A Veil is Lifted, find Wrest in his comfort zone, perfecting his craft. These two tracks would have fit perfectly on previous records such as MCAL. The glue that holds all of this together though is the final three tracks, a true ode to everything past and present that makes Leviathan great. They weave together so well, they could have made up one large track. Those that enjoyed the Lurker of Chalice project, will find a lot to love in the last section of this record.
3Leviathan
Massive Conspiracy Against All Life

What was once supposed to be the follow-up to the self titled Lurker of chalice record, eventually transformed into the third Leviathan full length. This record is so good it almost hurts having to put it as low as three but then again, that's also a toast to how consistent the project is with it's albums. It also should come as no surprise that this was originally intended as a LOC album as it may be the most atmospheric in the discography. The balance here between crushing riffs and rich atmosphere is perfected here. An example is Made as the Stale Wine of Wrath, the first six minutes are chaotic and heavy as the song thrashes along at breakneck speed. Yet above all that, hanging over its head like a mushroom cloud, is this atmospheric like dread, that after he six minute mark, completely engulfs the song and takes over with slow paced keyboards. The transition is perfect, well executed and never feels forced. This is a common theme on this record and it's biggest positive.
4Leviathan
Tentacles of Whorror

If you love your black metal full of catchy riffs, please start here with Leviathan. Featuring some of their easier to digest tracks like Heir to the Noose of Ghoul and Vexed and Vomit hexed are carried by these riffs mentioned above. This may be the catchiest Leviathan record and clearly by the album title, song titles and overall attitude in this record, Wrest doesn't seem to take himself as serious here as he has on other records. A really straight forward record, he did not try to follow the same exact formula that worked on TTSLOS and therefore managed to avoid the sophomore slump here.
5Leviathan
True Traitor, True Whore

Here we have it, the ugly duckling of Leviathans discography. While I do have it ranked last, this is by no means a bad record and I still find it highly enjoyable. The only issue here, is that the record suffers from inconsistency and a lack of cohesiveness. Some tracks like Shed This Skin seem to go nowhere, yet it followed up the incredible Contrary Pulse which is a well executed slab of atmospheric black metal. Therefore making this record just feel a little rushed. This is a Leviathan record that has some really great individual tracks but doesn't seem to have an identity. Does it want to be a straight forward black metal album (True Whorror)? Does it want to experiment with atmosphere (Harlot Rises)? It never really answers these questions because it doesn't spend enough time carving out these ideas. Still a worthy addition to his discography though.
