Ferro's Favorites: Top 10 EPs of 2015

Gonna wait a bit longer to post my top albums of the year list, so here's my favorite EPs of the year

10The Suffers
Make Some Room

[Soul]

Here on 'Make Some Room', The Suffers are playing a more old school type of soul, musically and lyrically. While the former of those two really benefits the EP, the latter sort make it sound like it's from the 50's (and not in a good way). But the beauty that is "Giver" really makes up for the occasional lyrical hiccup.

9City Mist
Chance To Be Wild

[Indie Rock]

After lurking through Bandcamp, I came across this EP from my hometown and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The production may be a bit amateur-ish, but there are some catchy tunes in here. Again possible bias, but I gotta rep my hometown music scene in someway, right?

8Sampa The Great
Weapon Chosen

[Hip Hop]

Did you love Hiatus Kaiyote's 'Choose Your Weapon'? Well you'll probably love this too. Based around samples from the Australian group's sophomore LP, this EP gives new life to these tracks. The fact that 'Choose Your Weapon' is one of my favorite albums of the year may show some bias, but whatever this is a fun EP.

7Girl Band
The Early Years

[Noise Rock]

While I don't usually listen to a lot of this kind of music, I couldn't help but be enraptured by the intensity within it. This is especially true for the lead singer, who bring some memorable refrains to the table, especially on the 8-minute "Why The Hide The Bodies under My Garage?".

6Narc Twain
Narc Twain

[Indie Rock]

Some catchy punk-influenced indie rock that shows off the band's knack for writing catchy songs ("Future Shock"), their instrumental prowess ("And Today, Nothing"), and the utilization of both skills ("No Connection"). Within the lyrics, there's some clever, politically related lines that give the EP something to say.

5Olga Bell
Incitation

[Indie Pop]

As a member of Dirty Projectors, it would make since that Olga Bell's solo EP would have a great pop sensibility. Luckily, she comes through with some great indie pop tunes. The vocals on here really shine, as Olga is the star of her own show.

4Open Mike Eagle
A Special Episode Of

[Hip Hop]

Any album that references Age Of Adz is after my own heart. The fact that this is a worthy follow-up to Eagle's 2014 LP 'Dark Comedy' makes it that much better. Plus 'Dark Comedy Late Show' may be one of the rapper greatest songs yet.

"Ziggy Starfish (Anti-Anxiety Raps)": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3ib9gCw1F4
3Tipper
Fathoms

[IDM]

Heavily influenced by the musical world of Downtmepo, the superior Tipper 2015 EP is a collection of extremely chill tracks that have a watery feel to them. If you love the usual sound of Tipper's music, prepared to be surprised by 'Fathoms' more laid back approach to IDM.

"Peripherals": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxyETNQOiOo
2Kate Boy
Kate Boy

[Electropop]

Hailing from Sweden, the music of Kate Boy has a bit of an icy touch within their synthesizers akin of their homeland. That doesn't prevent their debut EP from being an incredibly fun electropop EP. Some of the tightest grooves in pop music this year can be found on here, so don't skimp on it.

"Northern Lights": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raqxctNC04k
1Iglooghost
Chinese Nü Yr

[Wonky]

Sounding like it came from another dimension, UK producer Iglooghost has given us 15 minutes of some of most creative electronic music to come out this year with 'Chinese Nü Yr'. Numerous musical bases are touched upon within the 4 tracks residing on this EP: IDM, Wonky, Glitch Hop, Bubblegum Bass, and Hip Hop are fused together to create something equally fun and mindbending.
