07.16.16 | I understand many will cry foul for no Neurosis here (honestly, I've never been that big of a fan), or Russian Circles (I adore them, but contend that they are far more pleasurable a live band than individual listening). I get it, but with such a wide range of bands available you can't please everyone.
Some others that were contenders:
Red Sparrowes - Every Red Heart...
Rosetta - Wake/Lift
Isis - Panopticon
Neurosis - Given to the Rising
The Ocean - Pelagial
Junius - Martyrdom of a Catastrophist
Intronaut - Valley of Smoke |
Greem
07.16.16 | check:
Tides - Resurface
Giant - Song
Mare - Mare
Blindead - Affiction
Latitudes - Agonist
Year of No Light - Ausserwelt
Neurosis/Tribes of Neurot - Times of Grace/Grace |
RogueNine

07.16.16 | I'm all about Tides, giant and Year of No Light. I'll check the rest out.
I had a band in the genre for a while, got to play with the likes of Rosetta, Battlefields, Gaza, Russian Circles, Minus the Bear, Tony Danza, ALOL and tons and tons of other post bands that came through. Was turned on to a lot of great music that way. Oh Across Tundras as well, loved that band. |

07.16.16 | "I understand many will cry foul for no Neurosis here"
Neurosis is one of my favourite bands, but I honestly don't think of them as "post-metal". They might have influenced the genre in a big way, but everything from Souls At Zero up until A Sun That Never Sets is pretty much its own avant-garde type of sludge metal in my book. Not really the kind of post-metal bands such as Isis or Cult of Luna play. The Eye of Every Storm on the other hand is quite post-ish, I'll admit.
As for post-metal being a bad genre...it's not better or worse than most other metal subgenres. Sure, there are way too many sublevel b-grade copycat bands active in the genre, but several albums by bands such as Isis, Cult of Luna, Amenra...are fantastic.
Bands such as Ulcerate and Altar of Plagues aren't really "post metal" in my book. Ulcerate is indeed more of a tech-death band in the vein of Gorguts, though they have some post-rock influences. Altar of Plagues is more like blackened industrial metal with a few post-rock touches. Both albums by these two bands that made the list are fantastic though.
Same for The Ocean, amazing band, but not really post-metal in my book. More like a progressive sludge band in the vein of (early) Mastodon.
My apologies for being a nitpicking asshole. |

07.16.16 | There are no bad genres. Only good and bad artist. Some really nice picks here. If I were making it, I'd definitely put Intronaut's Prehistoricisms on there. |

don't be ridiculous it goes something like this:
1st wave black metal > all other black metal > death metal > doom metal > thrash metal > post metal > prog metal |
iloveyouall

07.16.16 | "1st wave black metal > all other black metal > death metal > doom metal > thrash metal > post metal > prog metal"
Black metal is overcrowded with b-grade bands that all sound the same. If black metal is good, it's really fucking good, but waaayyyyy too many bands in that genre rip off classic bands and do a shittier job at it than the original band did. |
MillionDead
07.16.16 | As if that order could really be objective. Also, I personally wouldn't put 1st before 2nd. Blasty screechy is better than thrashy grunty. |

07.16.16 | I'll add these to the pile
Rlyr - https://magicbulletrecords.bandcamp.com/album/rlyr-delayer side project from someone in Pelican and someone from Locrian but sounds more Pelican-like.
Omega Massif - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOw_1Jd_6ZU surprised they didn't get a mention, leans a bit doom/drone-wards but still one of my favourites.
He Whose OX is Gored - https://hewhoseoxisgored.bandcamp.com/album/the-camel-the-lion-the-child post-metal with some post-hardcore, good stuff whatever.
Wizard Rifle - https://wizardrifle.bandcamp.com/album/speak-loud-say-nothing more sludgey punky whatever but recommended. |
