2008: Top 10 Songs from the Billboard Hot 100 Year-End Chart

Another year bites the dust. This was yet another tough year to rank and, quite frankly, I'm happy to be at the seventh list now so that I can move on to making a different-themed set of lists for the next little bit. Hope that you guys enjoyed these lists and definitely watch out for more of them in the future. Here are a few honourable mentions: "Sensual Seduction" by Snoop Dogg (almost made it into the top 10 due to the awesome music video and the last minute of the song, which finally sees Snoop actually rapping, but the rest of this tune is just awful, the chorus is derivative and the autotuned vocals are horrendous), "Paper Planes" by M.I.A. (another song that almost made the list, but, besides the super-catchy chorus and the fact that it is perfect movie trailer music, this track absolutely sucks, the verses are terrible and the song is one of the worst mixed Hot 100 ranked songs that I have ever heard in my life) and "4 Minutes" by Madonna & Justin Timberlake (I was surprised to have enjoyed this song as much as I did, yet another song that almost made the list and it's a good song that I can't say much bad about, the only thing that bothered me was the ending, it kind of lost its momentum for me, but Madonna and J.T. are great and the beats provided by Timbaland are surprisingly stellar).
10Keyshia Cole
Just Like You

#99: "Heaven Sent" - Here's a song that I almost immediately fell in love with. It contains a nice, euphoric sound throughout thanks to the relaxing melody (which makes me feel like I'm on a tropical island whilst listening to it) and Cole's stunning vocal performance. This is a rare Billboard-charting song that I literally have nothing bad to say about after hearing it. The song is just as beautiful as the lady who sings it and also represents a pleasant break away from all of the overwhelmingly obnoxious party jams of 2008. This track was literally "sent from heaven", it gets better and better the more I hear it.
9Gavin Rossdale
Wanderlust

#94: "Love Remains the Same" - Another song that continues to get better the more I hear it. Of course many already know this man as the lead singer of Bush, but I had no idea he had a short-run as a solo artist. The song feels very personal in the best way possible, nothing's forced and everything feels just right. If I had one problem with this song, it'd be the awkward music video, which seems to be in love with Rossdale, as it features him taking showers, kicking around balls, making dinner and staring into your soul. Besides a mediocre video, the song itself is great and features Rossdale delivering one of the finest vocal performances of his entire career (as he's mostly left alone throughout the track too, just him and his guitar for the most part, as the drums don't kick in until the second verse).
8Kanye West
Graduation

#90: "Flashing Lights" (feat. Dwele) - When the best part of your song is literally in the name of the song itself, you know there's a problem. Here's a perfect example of a tune that gets more tiring the more you hear it, but then again I find most of Kanye's discography to be like that. Not to say that this is a bad song in anyway, it just feels like the typical rapper, ego trip type of lyrics that are backed up by an extremely catchy beat and hook. Still a good song, but it's not as memorable as I remembered it being when I first heard it.
7Three 6 Mafia
Last 2 Walk

#70: "Lolli Lolli" (feat. Project Pat, Young D & Superpower) - "Please, Lord, have some mercy". Have some mercy indeed. If this isn't as guilty a pleasure as all hell then I don't know what the f#@$ is. This is one of those trashy rap tracks that somehow gripped me immediately with an absolutely hysterical hook that sounds like a parody of rap lyrics, an awesome opening verse from DJ Paul and the fact that the melody layered throughout the background is literally a combination of the Halloween theme and the infamous Friday the 13th "ch, ch, ch, ch, ha, ha, ha, ha" sound effect. I should hate this song, and I don't blame anyone who does hate it, but I don't; it's just one of those songs that realizes it's absolutely trashy and yet completely embraces that notion till the very end. Also try saying "lolli, lolli, lolli, lolli" without your tongue hitting the roof of your mouth, it is impossible I tell you!
6Lupe Fiasco
The Cool

#63: "Superstar" (feat. Matthew Santos) - Here's another case of a song that's absolutely forgettable aside from an extremely catchy hook that reels you in right away. The only thing that I find somewhat memorable about Lupe's verses throughout is that he says "M&Ms" and isn't referring to Marshal Mathers in any way. How embarrassing that I'm thinking about other, better rappers while listening to this song. Oh well. Time to move on.
53 Doors Down
3 Doors Down

#52: "It's Not My Time" - When I say it's time to move on, I mean that it's time to move on to something that is actually worth listening to. A song that is hopeful and inspiring, as opposed to being trite and trashy (like the last 3 tracks). Simply put, I love this song. From the very first moment I heard it on the radio, this quickly became my favourite 3 Doors Down song and one that I figured would have led a spectacular self-titled record (but I was sorely disappointed). Besides being utterly baffled by how uninspired the album itself was, it doesn't diminish from this truly great track whatsoever. While I do wish that there was more variation in the vocal department when looking back in hindsight, the fact that the vocals are restrained and well-timed are what made me a fan of the band in the first-place (despite their only good album being Away From the Sun).
4Webbie
Savage Life 2

#45: "Independent" (feat. Lil Phat and Lil Boosie) - Yet another guilty pleasure. However, while the other rap tracks were quite trashy, this song is surprisingly not as trashy as I originally thought it would be. Sure, there's lots of sex talk and $#!% like that, but this song is about women who don't need to be bought, because the women depicted in this track can take care of themselves. While far from a female empowerment song, it's refreshing to hear a rap track not talking about women as if they're objects, instead it's sort of the other way around in this case, as the rappers depict themselves as the ones who are being bought by the women (a funny and unexpected role reversal in terms of modern rap songs). Plus if you need to learn how to spell "independent", this song has you covered: "I.N.D.E.P.E.N.D.E.N.T. / do you know what that mean, mang"?
3Ne-Yo
Year of the Gentleman

#20: "Closer" - This song took a while to reel me in, but I can confidently say that I enjoy it. I definitely don't see myself listening to this song again any time soon, but it's simple enough and catchy enough to get by. Admittedly I almost immediately disregarded this track, as soon as I heard the opening lines, "closer / closer", I couldn't help but think of a much better song from a far better band. The one thing that keeps this song from falling over is the insanely catchy hook and Ne-Yo's soulful vocal performance throughout; thankfully he never tries to oversell the track by screaming the chorus at a painfully loud rate, something that a ton of modern R&B singers are guilty of (I'm looking at you, Jason Derulo).
2Natasha Bedingfield
Pocketful of Sunshine

#18: "Pocketful of Sunshine" - Ugh. I thought I'd hate this song when I first heard it, the first 30 seconds or so are so utterly repetitive that I was almost inclined to make a worst of 2008 list instead... but then the chorus came in. I can't say that I love this song, but I will certainly admit that I do thoroughly enjoy it in spite of the extremely repetitious lyrics at the start. That chorus is just too powerful to resist, it's one of those choruses that I'd love to hear being sampled in a really great rap song (similar to Dido's "Thank You" becoming the mesmerizing hook for "Stan" by Eminem). Overall, as it is, this is a solid song that may just leave you with a smile on your face as it did with me.
1Leona Lewis
Spirit

#2: "Bleeding Love" - "Lolli, lolli, lolli, lolli, let me see you pop that body"! Whoops, wrong song, this is a song from Leona Lewis and... she's stunning to behold, but thankfully her pipes can back her up as well. This is a catchy little tune that makes me want to hear more from her but I'm almost worried that I'll be disappointed since mostly all of these X-Factor/American Idol/The Voice winners end up being nothing more than one-hit wonders who fade away after a CD or two, but Lewis has four CDs, unfortunately the last one she released was a Christmas album (and we all know how those usually turn out). Back on topic though, this is a gripping track from a stunning vocalist. Other than that, I don't have much to say about this song, it's just great, and it gets better the more I hear it. I also find it funny how I have yet to hear ONE good song from Alicia Keys, yet the one song I hear from this singer, that I knew nothing about beforehand, captured me right away. Crazy.
