| 2010: Top 10 Songs from the Billboard Hot 100 Year-End Chart
Meh. That's my overall reaction to this year as a whole. I remember really enjoying the songs on this list when I first heard them, but now I just don't really care for them as much as I did originally. This was probably the trickiest list to decide upon so far. Tons of artists had multiple songs that I enjoyed (such as Eminem and Taylor Swift), but I wanted to make this a fair list and only list one song per artist. So here are some honourable mentions: "All I Do is Win" by DJ Khaled, Ludacris, Rick Ross, T-Pain & Snoop Dogg (I kind of hate this song, but I really like the parts featuring Ludacris and Snoop Dogg, plus T-Pain is always great on the hook, so whatever), "Forever" by Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne & Eminem (Kanye West and Lil Wayne are just $#!% on this track, which kept me from placing it on the list, but Drake and Eminem especially are outstanding, not sure why the music video had to be a blatant advertisement for Lebron James though), "Mine" by Taylor Swift, "Breakeven" by The Script, "Not Afraid" by Eminem and "Nothin' On You" by B.o.B & Bruno Mars. | 10 | | Kings of Leon Only By The Night
#87: "Use Somebody" - Kings of Leon went pop for this record. I really enjoyed their two albums before Only by the Night (Because of the Times and Aha Shake Heartbreak), but this album fell right in the middle of the road for me. While songs like "Use Somebody" and album opener "Closer" are atmospheric and fantastic, songs such as "17" and "Sex on Fire" make me want to take a shower to rid myself of such filth. The album thankfully has some gems though, and "Use Somebody" is certainly the single that got me reeled in. Backed by a loud, yet compelling opening riff, along with Caleb Followill's refreshing vocal performance throughout, the song is a great ballad about feeling lonesome, trying to find love and feeling held back with doing so (due to things such as fame and constant travel). While I now find the album to be rather middle-of-the-road overall, nothing will erase the fact that this song is outstanding in every way and was easily one of the best songs on the radio in 2010. | 9 | | Taylor Swift Speak Now
#84: "Today Was a Fairytale" - Unfortunately this song wasn't included on this album. Instead it was featured on a soundtrack for a vanilla film named Valentine's Day that Taylor Swift happened to act in. Originally I was going to include "Mine" on this list, but that song makes my skin crawl whenever I hear the opening "oh, oh, oh" lines.... and I don't even hate the song; I just get annoyed with that opening. So here we have "Today Was a Fairytale", a genuinely sweet and endearing track in every regard. Though I wasn't sold on it immediately, as soon as that chorus started, Taylor got me again, but the lines near the beginning, "you told me I was pretty when I looked like a mess / today was a fairytale", are kind of dumb. I'm pretty sure that when Taylor looks "like a mess", she's still stunning to behold (just watch the "Blank Space" video if you don't believe me). Anyhow, my love for T-Swizzle continues. | 8 | | B.o.B The Adventures Of Bobby Ray
#63: "Magic" (feat. Rivers Cuomo) - Quite a great chorus can usually help maintain a track's flow, but sometimes they're just awesome. "Magic" puts B.o.B and Rivers Cuomo (of Weezer fame) to excellent use. The song is brimming with utter charm and spirit throughout. This is simply a wonderful song all-around. B.o.B has fantastic flow, Rivers can make a helluva chorus and it's a non-profane breathe of fresh air from a list of other rap songs that are obnoxiously loud and mean-spirited. In all honesty though, this song and B.o.B's collaboration with Bruno Mars, titled "Nothin' on You", are pretty much equally in terms of overall quality. Deciding between which of the two to include was definitely a challenge, but I eventually settled on this one simply because I often confuse "Nothin' on You" with "Just the Way You Are"; a good song by Bruno Mars, but it has nothing on "Nothin' on You" in my opinion. | 7 | | La Roux La Roux
#42: "Bulletproof" - Here's another album, like Only by the Night, that I liked right away, but soon found myself getting bored of. It's still an okay album, but maybe the overuse of electronic sound-effects puts me off a bit when looking back in hindsight. One thing's for sure though, and that is that "Bulletproof" is still an extremely catchy tune. My only problem with the song is in the chorus when she actually says "this time, baby, I'll be here / bulletproof", it's sounds like she's saying "bully-proof". The music video is laughable as well, but, other than those minor gripes, I still find this song to be a lot of fun to listen to and I think that La Roux is a great vocalist when you take away the unnecessary, sometimes annoying, beats that are interspersed throughout. | 6 | | Flo Rida Only One Flo (Part 1)
#40: "Club Can't Handle Me" (feat. David Guetta) - This was a difficult list to make... songs like this should help illustrate my struggle a little too perfectly. Here we have another typical club/dance song that is surprisingly okay when compared to rubbish from such "artists" as Pitbull and Jason Derulo. While merely being passable is hardly something to be honoured about, Flo Rida at least seems to be having a great time making music, while other popular musicians tend to sound like they're just doing it to stay relevant before their eventual slip into obscurity. There's nothing overly special about this song, but it gets the job done well enough with a bumping batch of beats and a super-catchy chorus. | 5 | | Michael Buble Crazy Love
#39: "Haven't Met You Yet" - Okay, confession time: I kind of love this song. Yes, it's incredibly cheesy, packed with cheesy vocals and a cheesy music video to accompany it, but, in that cheese, there's something that is undeniably charming within this little searching for love anthem. I just enjoy everything about this song. Every single time I hear it, I cannot help but smile in reaction to it. This is just good-spirited, wholesome fun all-around. | 4 | | Drake Thank Me Later
#32: "Find Your Love" - Probably Drake's best song thus far in his career. No rapping involved here either, just an earnest vocal performance from Drake that is maintained throughout. The music video definitely gives the track more intensity and meaning, showing Drake's undying thirst for a woman who belongs to another only to end in tragedy (not as tragic as The Last King of Scotland however, which I kept getting flashbacks to throughout possibly due to the setting). As a whole, this song is phenomenally well-paced, it literally feels like it goes by in a snap, and it also finds Drake at his most relatable. This is a great song. | 3 | | Jay-Z The Blueprint 3
#21: "Empire State of Mind" (feat. Alicia Keys) - Jay's eleven record turned out to be quite an over-hyped piece of dreck overall. However, despite that disappointment, this hit single still leaves me impressed and reminds me why I gave the album a chance in the first-place. This is a very catchy rap track that finds Jay filled with unbridled confidence and swagger throughout. Funny enough though, he isn't the one who steals the show here. Alicia Keys is absolutely amazing on the chorus here and brings the song up to a-whole-nother level, she's truly spectacular here and I find it to be a real shame that I haven't been able to get invested in her music; "Girl on Fire" definitely had a major part in me keeping away from listening to her discography in any capacity, but her guest verse here makes me want to give her a shot and see what she's capable of. | 2 | | Eminem Recovery
#7: "Love the Way You Lie" (feat. Rihanna) - Another great duet between a rapper and a female vocalist. "Love the Way You Lie" is a fascinating song to say the least. It's very dark and honest about rocky relationships, perfectly describing the back-and-forth that constantly goes on between couples who are on the brink of collapse. This is easily my favourite song featuring Rihanna, as it's the closest she's come to describing the horrible relationship between her and Chris Brown (who seemingly responded to the break-up with a vile little track named "Deuces", which should have been called "D*@%#&$" instead for obvious reasons). Eminem's performance is nothing to deny either, he continues to prove why he's one of the best rappers alive with razor-edged sharpness and unbelievable quickness at his disposal. All-in-all, this is one of my favourite songs featured on this chart and a tune that will still hold up well when looked back upon years from now. | 1 | | Lady Antebellum Need You Now
#2: "Need You Now" - The album name is ironic to me at least because I haven't been able to find another good song by these guys for the life of me. This is just a perfect country song in every way imaginable. Something that makes this song so gripping is the fact that both men and women can relate to it since vocal duties are evenly divided between the male and female vocalists. Not much to say about this one because it literally speaks for itself, it's a fantastic country song and one that puts shame to modern country musicians who frantically rave about trucks and Daisy Dukes like they're going out of style. To see this track so high on the chart was a surprise, a genuine and extremely pleasant surprise indeed. | |

03.01.15 | This was a tough year to crack. Lots of mediocrity, surprised I could actually scrap out a Top 10. My favourites of the 10 listed are: 10, 8, 5, 4 and 2. Next year doesn't look so promising either (especially with "Boom Boom Pow" being at #1 on the chart, that alone should be taken as a very bad omen). | HalfManHalfAmazing
03.01.15 | hey man you put the wrong Drake album lol | HalfManHalfAmazing
03.01.15 | I actually did karaoke to Love the Way You Lie i nearly blew my lungs out | riffariffic7
03.01.15 | Haha. Thanks for catching that, man. Time to make an edit. :D Did you have a partner on Eminem/Rihanna duty, or did you take on both roles? | Pangea
03.01.15 | Pretty good list, although i would put Teenage Dream and All The Right Moves in here. Just looked at the year-end chart and damn, this was een average year | ChoccyPhilly
03.01.15 | Hey nice list. I'd probably have a few of these on here too and they're bringing back some fun memories. I'm so sick of empire state of mind though and love the way you lie part 2 is so much better | granitenotebook
03.01.15 | I would put Teenage Dream on here [2] and I'm so glad I found another serious music fan who loves "Magic," such a jam | riffariffic7
03.01.15 | I would have put "Teenage Dream" on here, but I kept it off because I put it on the previous year's list. That's the only thing that sucks about making lists backwards, sometimes a great song will be on the list for 2 (even 3) years in a row and I always make the unspoken rule to never include songs that I've already included on previous years. Makes it more of a challenge I find, plus I hate repetition. Also, kind of sucks how these lists cut off your paragraph if it reaches past a certain amount of characters. I like the changes to the lists overall, but I find that one thing to be extremely irritating. | Pangea
03.01.15 | I forgot you already used Teenage Dream on your list. Yeah it's definitely a good idea to not use it twice | Emyay
03.05.15 | 1 is a great song agreed |
