11.27.13 My Favorite Punk Bands

My Favorite Punk Bands

Title says it all!
1Ramones

The Ramones really are the reason for every other band on here. It's kind of a
love
hate thing with this band for a lot of people, but in my opinion every rock fan
should
appreciate their style and influence. Undoubtedly the first punk rock band, and
surely
one of the few true rock n roll bands of the mid-to-late seventies. Best band
ever.
2Bad Brains

Much like how the Ramones created true punk rock, the Bad Brains should be
credited with the creation of hardcore. They were really the first punk band to
have great musicians, which gives them a very unique sound.
3Dead Boys

The second best band to come from CBGB in my opinion. People some times say
they're
the American Sex Pistols, but really the Sex Pistols are the English Dead Boys.
Every one
of their nihilistic songs are like looking into the chaotic lives they led. Much
more authentic
than the Pistols. The Dead Boys are kind of like AC/DC meets Ramones, with great
lead
guitar.
4The Clash (early years)

Punk- The Ramones gave it the sound, the Sex Pistols popularized the look, and
the
Clash gave it the politics (for better or worse). Another punk band that is
often loved
or hated. I have to admit though, I tune out for London Calling. From then on,
they
generally turned their back on punk in favor of reggae and new wave, which isn't
nearly as good as the early stuff to me. Give Em Enough Rope was in my opinion
their
best album.
5Black Flag

Like the Bad Brains, Black Flag should be given due credit for helping create
what we
now call hardcore punk. Unfortunately they also went away from punk in favor of
art-
rock, which I'm just not a fan of.
6The Queers

This band does not give a damn about anything, and I love em for that. A great
true to
form punk rock band with tinges of hardcore and pop punk that leaves little
wanting.
You can always expect great songs from The Queers.
7Screeching Weasel

While The Queers are great, Screeching Weasel should be given credit for
inventing the
modern pop punk sound. It's hard to decide which one is better.
8Minor Threat

One of the other founders of hardcore. Take it or leave it. If you like one
song,
you'll like
them all.
9The Vindictives

One of the early pop punk bands, along with SW, The Queers, and MTX. The
Vindictives
are crazier and a little more eclectic than their pop punk contemporaries (as
evident by
"Muzak for Robots", a techno compilation album of their classic songs.) Great,
great band.
10Husker Du

One of the best songwriting duos of all time is Bob Mould and Grant Hart. From
hardcore
to punk to power pop to alternative, this band really knew how to write great
songs.
