10.20.13 | I know the last two bands don't use 7 strings, but their guitar sound has really influenced mine, so figured I'd include them |
InbredJed
10.20.13 | I jammed all of these hard back in the day, cept for Korn.
Sounds like you'll have a pretty grating guitar tone going on there mang. |
GmemberKills
10.20.13 | Cool list. I got 7 a string myself, never played in A standard before. Jam in Drop G# an F# alot, reckon cause Im a deftones fan. Really need to get new pickups for mine my bottom string can get muddy on open notes sometimes. |
wacknizzle
10.20.13 | Lol, your profile picture rules, story of my life |
Parallels
10.20.13 | 7 strings are boss if you can master them |
ChuckyTruant
10.20.13 | Forget Blaze's, go with a d-activator and air norton.
I don't have any 7's at the moment but have owned a few in the past. |

10.20.13 | @GmemberKills I contemplated G#, simply cause the Deftones self-titled sounds pretty sweet with it, A feels like my sweet spot though
@Parallels it's odd, cause I've been playing for about 7 1/2 years now, and the first week of going from 6 to 7 was so odd. now it feels like i've always played on one lol
@Chucky I've been considering those too, but I have a soft spot for the Blaze's cause they were in the original Ibanez Universe and they just were like omg |
ChuckyTruant
10.20.13 | Yeah that's true, but I find them to be a dated pickup. They aren't really meant for metal either. |
ChuckyTruant
10.20.13 | Anyways I'm a huge gear nerd and total Ibanez fanboy so hit me up if you ever want to talk shop. I'm always game to talk gear |
Parallels
10.20.13 | dream theater's awake is prob my fav use of 7 string. Tuned half step down to boot... good luck on the solos tho if you attempt it |
ChuckyTruant
10.20.13 | Look to Blotted Science for some awesome 7 string material |
GmemberKills
10.20.13 | Thats whats up, the first time i heard the tone on Hexagram is what made me want to acquire 7 a string. I'll Have to try A sometime. Im guessing since your choosing a tuning for your guitar its like a Floyd rose or something? |
sapient
10.20.13 | @Chucky thanks man, It actually is a 1999 S series Ibanez, so right up your alley then haha
@Paralells I've actually considered tackling Lie eventually, my legato and sweeps are clean enough to try it, but the speed picked stuff that Pertucci does is what gets me |
ChuckyTruant
10.20.13 | Very nice |

10.20.13 | s7420 or? |
sapient
10.20.13 | and yeah G, it's a floyd, it's got it's ups and downs, but I like that it stays in tune a lot more often, but not being able to switch back and forth makes me think hard about what I want the tuning to be before I ever take it to the shop |
sapient
10.20.13 | yeah it's the s7420, got it used awhile back for about $500. it was between that or a Iceman 7, but the S body just felt a lot more comfortable and the Mahogany gives it a real nice tone |
ChuckyTruant
10.20.13 | Agreed, just awesome man, I've got three Japanese Ibby's |
Parallels
10.20.13 | yea its nuts. What are you currently tackling with the 7 string? |
sapient
10.20.13 | Lucky, I've been meaning to try and scoop up a 6 string Ibanez as well, I used to heavily use Gibson Les Pauls, but I really like how Ibanez guitars seem to have that nice balance between modern and classic sounds
And currently to build up picking speed I've been trying a lot of Fear Factory Demanufacture-era stuff, not complicated fretboard wise, but builds up strength in the right hand for sure. Also been writing a lot of my own stuff to keep getting more comfortable with it |
ChuckyTruant
10.20.13 | Yeah honestly my 3 RGA Prestiges can do anything I want. I've got various DiMarzio models in all of them and they are just joyous. |
GmemberKills
10.20.13 | I got a 6 string Floyd kinda recently that i mess with from time to time staying in tune is real convenient, i could see that even more so if you were a touring musician. My 7 string is a esp ltd sc-207 its a lower end version hence why i need new pickups, but i think i really prefer the convenience of changing tuning with no hassle. |
ChuckyTruant
10.20.13 | Yeah I've gotten away from Floyd's. A properly setup hard tail with a good bridge and good nut will stay in tune just as well and be half the hassle. |
sapient
10.20.13 | Chucky have you tried Dimarzio Evolutions out at all? I've been hearing that those are pretty intense sounding pups |
ChuckyTruant
10.20.13 | I have used the 7 string version. I personally didn't like it that much. It is a good pickup, but not much my style. It was very stale sounding, or dull you could say. It has nice clarity and attack but something was missing. Just no "oomph" characteristic. I'm a big fan of both the Tone Zone and the D-Activator. |
sapient
10.20.13 | See, I'm usually not a fan of using the trem for dive bombs and stuff like that, but my experimenting with it to get some weird warped sounds is another reason why I don't ditch the Floyd |
sapient
10.20.13 | Yeah from the vids I watch watched it seemed a bit treble-heavy to my ears. Usually you can only take those tone vids with a grain of salt since they probably clean the sound up a bit after, but still. I'm mainly wanting to have ones that have a good full sound on the low end that's not too muddy, with enough highs so I can still work with solos |
ChuckyTruant
10.20.13 | I'd try a TZ-7. It might git a little loose on the low, but proper EQ'ing can fix that, but it has an alnico V magnet that will help it sound warmer and be more pleasant to the ears on the high end. |
sonictheplumber
10.20.13 | rush -counterpartz |
bloc
10.20.13 | Go with the Dimarzio Crunch Lab and Liquifer. I had them in my 6 string Ibanez S and they killed. |
