Public Library Finds and Other Gets
I get my musical education funded by my city government, thank you very much. Latter half of list is recent buys at the record store. |
1 | | Thursday No Devolucion
Loved Full Collapse and War All the Time, supposedly the band's swan song. |
2 | | The Chemical Brothers Hanna: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Any time pop/rock artists do soundtracks, I'm in. |
3 | | R.E.M. Automatic for the People
Out of Time is a classic, hopefully I feel the same way about this. |
4 | | DragonForce Maximum Overload
lol this band. No, really, Ultra Beatdown is one my favorite power metal albums, which tells you much I care to listen to the genre of power metal, I guess. The band supposedly took a different approach with this one, so after the letdown that was The Power Within, hopefully they can restore my faith. |
5 | | Jane's Addiction Ritual De Lo Habitual
Still have Nothing's Shocking sitting on my shelf waiting to be listened to, heard this is nearly as good, excited to hear "Three Days" for the first time |
6 | | Guns N' Roses Chinese Democracy
Doesn't deserve nearly the all the hate it gets. Lots of interesting textures and Axl sounds pretty great on a number of tracks. |
7 | | John Powell How to Train Your Dragon
Love this movie, got the soundtrack |
8 | | John Powell How to Train Your Dragon 2
Love this movie even more than the first, got the soundtrack |
9 | | Sonic Youth Daydream Nation
One of indie rock's most beloved albums, first time hearing "Trilogy" |
10 | | A Tribe Called Quest The Low End Theory
One of hip-hop's most beloved albums |
11 | | Limp Bizkit Three Dollar Bill Y'all$
An interesting look at their beginnings. I love a lot of the tracks here, but some of the tracks aren't as memorable, and Significant Other will always in my mind be best Bizkit. GET THE FUCK UP |
12 | | Dayshell Dayshell
While definitely more enjoyable than OM&M's Restoring Force, I do miss the chemistry between Shayley and Austin on The Flood, which isn't present here on Shay's solo effort, and a lot of the tracks here tend to run together. |
13 | | Sufjan Stevens Illinois
Figured I'd hear his breakout album while concurrently listening to Carrie & Lowell, The Age of Adz is a hard 5 in my book |
14 | | Wilco Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Indie band triumphs over major label to release post-9/11 themed album, or so the story goes |
15 | | Grimes Visions
"Oblivion" is Pitchfork's #3 track of the decade so far, can't be wrong, right? |
16 | | Public Enemy It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us
Get rid of the interludes here and this would be a straight 5. As it is, it's only bested by Fear of a Black Planet, which is even more ambitious and cohesive. |
17 | | Radiohead Amnesiac
This may require a number of more listens, but for the moment, this album peaks early for me with "Pyramid Song" and then really loses momentum through the rest of it. I can see why a lot of these tracks were left off Kid A. Sucks, because I was fully expecting to love this just as much as that album. |
18 | | Michael Giacchino The Incredibles
One of Giacchino's best scores for one of Pixar's best flicks, and really cool that they recorded this soundtrack to tape for that old 60's spy movie feel. |
19 | | The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Yes, yes, I've heard all the singles, but I've never experienced this front to back, I'd like to get through the rest of their discog eventually |
20 | | Aphex Twin Selected Ambient Works 85-92
Another album I was fully ready to deem a classic, but came away mostly disappointed from all the hype. I usually pride myself on liking electronic music that is considered a great example of the genre, but I felt really bored by this, it's just too repetitive for my liking. Maybe I'll try hearing Volume II next, see if I feel any different. |
21 | | Yes Fragile
My dad got me into this album at a very young age, which spawned my interest in progressive rock up to this day. He had the original 1990 CD version that sounded a little muddy and wasn't a proper transfer anyway, so I hankered down recently and found the 94 remaster by Joe Gastwirt that supposedly is the definitive sounding version of the album. Will be interesting to compare the two sonically. |
22 | | Skunk Anansie Paranoid And Sunburnt
Just reading about this band is enough to make me love them. Highly political 90's alt-rock with production from Sylvia Massy (Tool, System) and Andy Wallace (Slayer, Nirvana, Linkin Park). Never heard of these guys until recently, based on what I've read, they seem unjustly forgotten in 2015. |
23 | | Machines of Loving Grace Gilt
90's industrial is one of my favorite genres, and this looked interesting enough. Another Sylvia Massy produced effort. |
24 | | Extreme Extreme II: Pornograffitti
The album that supposedly made Nuno Bettencourt into a household name. Lots of subversive lyrics on this one. Production from Michael Wagener, mixer of Metallica's Master of Puppets. |
25 | | Urban Dance Squad Mental Floss for the Globe
I do love me some funk metal, so I'm exploring the bands of that genre. |
26 | | Incubus A Crow Left of the Murder...
Possibly the last Incubus album of their "classic" era. |
27 | | Soundtrack (Film) Judgement Night
Not going to bother seeing the movie (apparently it sucks), but what a great concept for a soundtrack, collabs from artists from different genres on every track. |
28 | | Soundtrack (Film) Spawn: The Album
Same concept and record label as above. |
29 | | Filter Short Bus
I remember being introduced to "Hey Man Nice Shot" by Guitar Hero of all things. |
30 | | Revis Places For Breathing
Thanks to user riffariffic7 for alerting me to this album. One of the few post-grunge acts I can say I really dig, great songwriting and production on this, courtesy of the production team behind Linkin Park's first two records. |
31 | | Rage Against the Machine The Battle of Los Angeles
While nothing can beat the self-titled record, this comes pretty damn close. |
32 | | Living Colour Vivid
Moar funk metal. CULT OF PERSONAAAALITYYYY |
33 | | White Zombie Astro Creep: 2000 -- Songs of Love, Destruction, a
La Sexorcisto turned out to be a classic (you probably already knew that), this promises to be of similar quality |
34 | | Bad Religion Stranger Than Fiction
Been getting around to the records that helped bring poppy punk into the mainstream (this, Dookie, Punk in Drublic and And Out Come the Wolves) |
35 | | Primus Sailing the Seas of Cheese
What's a funk metal binge complete without Les Claypool? You laughed, you cried, you just kissed your fifteen bucks goodbye ;) |
36 | | Soundgarden Superunknown
No description needed, I mean really |
37 | | Sevendust Home
A nu-metal classic |
38 | | Ultraspank Progress
Got this based on Sputnik declaring this the best nu-metal album of all time. Don't let me down, boys! |
39 | | Jeff Rosenstock We Cool?
Never even listened to BTMI, but this record is really rad. |
40 | | 36 Crazyfists Time and Trauma
Never heard this band before this album, this was really good too (at least coming from a newcomer) |
41 | | Beardyman Distractions
Deviant hates this, didn't think this was too bad |
42 | | Of Montreal Aureate Gloom
Never listened to a full album from these guys, another I-dig-from-the-newcomer-perspective-album. These guys just played here last night, missed the show cause I was exhausted from the fest the three nights prior, but I did see them 2 or 3 years ago. |
43 | | Young Buffalo House
Was drawn to this mainly because of the producer (Dave Schiffman, who's produced/engineered for Thrice, Vampire Weekend, Mars Volta and many more). |
44 | | Oneohtrix Point Never R Plus Seven
I first heard of Daniel while browsing a record store one night years ago and hearing one of his albums (Returnal or something else, can't remember) playing on the loudspeaker. Asked the clerk who was playing and he said Oneohtrix. I was like "Who?" Now, in 2015, there's enough critical mass behind him that I thought it was high time for me to Czech his stuff. From the library. |
45 | | Periphery Juggernaut: Alpha
It must have been my lucky day when I popped into the library a couple weeks ago, cause I found the section where they had all their new releases in circulation and grabbed this as soon as I saw it. |
46 | | Periphery Juggernaut: Omega
See above. (They were offering both discs in the same jewel case) |
47 | | Steven Wilson Hand. Cannot. Erase.
Possibly my most anticipated album of this year, this was even more of a surprise when I found this on the racks at the library. A library visit with Oneohtrix, Periphery and Steven Wilson in hand is not a bad library visit at all. :) (I also grabbed Danny Elfman's Fifty Shades of Grey score, because we all know that's the one potentially redeemable aspect of that pile of rubbish) |
48 | | Janet Jackson Janet.
Just listened to Control for the first time not too long ago, and suffice to say, between that and Rhythm Nation, Miss Jackson (if you're Nasty) has ended up becoming one of my favorite pop artists of all time. Decided to hanker down (I love using that phrase) and get her remaining "classic" period albums, including this one. Plus, I can now listen to Kendrick and Drizzy's "Poetic Justice" and not feel like I'm missing anything. |
49 | | Janet Jackson Velvet Rope
Her critical masterwork, and I wouldn't doubt it. A Joni Mitchell "Big Yellow Taxi" sample and Q-Tip on the same track? Hell yeah, I'm there. |
50 | | Radiohead The Bends
For this album's 20th anniversary, I decided to give this a proper listen after hearing it on and off for several years. Obviously we all know what came after this, but this album really brings the feels no matter the band's discog. The opening riffs of "Planet Telex" instantly transport me back to the early-to-mid 90's, even though I was just a toddler then. It's kind of like the Boards of Canada effect for people who didn't live during the 70's. Crazy how music can do that to you. |
