Top 10 Concept Albums
Concept Album: An album featuring a cycle of songs expressing a particular
theme, idea or story.
Crack The Skye
Mastodon's fourth release incorporated more Progressive music than ever before,
just listen to "The Czar" and "The Last Baron". Of Mastodon's albums, this is my
favourite given that prior to listening to it, I wasn't all that crazy about these guys.
Marilyn Manson has released a few concepts but Antichrist is still his best, not just
because its the most successful and spawned the biggest hits but the most
consistent and musically diverse Manson release.
Despite statements I've made to people that Queensryche and this album are both
overrated, I've had a change of heart and now consider Mindcrime a classic, even if
I don't consider it as highly as others, but the album's influence cannot be ignored.
Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
The track "Home" alone seals the spot for this otherwise excellent album. In my
opinion, not as good as Train Of Thought but overall leaving this album off would be
a crime to some, even if it was number 10. Musically staggering, a huge behemoth.
Being a massive Floyd fan, you'd expect all of their concept albums to be on here,
but their best concept album isn't their best record, which is why its at number six.
Still, The Wall is an epic piece of work and probably the last great Pink Floyd album.
|5||The Smashing Pumpkins|
Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness
Exploring the themes of day and night and despite claims it isn't a concept record,
the songs definitely hang together conceptually. It spawned four very successful
hit singles and propelled the Pumpkins to even more popularity and stardom.
|4||Queens Of The Stone Age|
Songs For The Deaf
Although it is commonly regarded as a loose concept, taking the listener on a drive
from Los Angeles to Joshua Tree while tuning into radio stations from towns on the
way, it definitely deserves inclusion. Not as strong of an album as Rated R however.
Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
The most progressive of Maiden's records and the inclusion of keyboards restores
the crunch absent from the previous album Somewhere In Time. The near 10 minute
title track really does take you on a journey and it's an underrated Maiden classic.
A vastly underrated album. The best release from King Diamond, musically, lyrically
and production wise from start to finish, Mickey Dee's drumming in particular is
phenomenal. Abigail even manages outshines the early work of Mercyful Fate (just).
Not just my favourite concept release, it's one of my favourite albums of all time
and still what I think to be the most complete observation from Opeth. Musically
and lyrically spectacular and has yet to be outdone in terms of the concept record.
Props for #2.
"The best release from King Diamond, musically, lyrically and production wise from start to finish, Mickey Dee's drumming in particular is phenomenal."
no deathconciousness? dam
Leaves Turn Inside You or Deathconciousness I haven't heard

Abigail m/ king diamond m/ harrdddddd
Great list. Heard em all except for 9 and 5. For me 7 is 1 and 3 is 2
Yeah, Abigail is very sweet.
I would add:
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
Savatage - Dead Winter Dead (more people should listen to this one)
No 2112 by Rush?
The Wall over Animals!? Damn.
Also list needs Thick as a Brick.
7 is so much better than ToT
Props for not having tommy by the who
janelle monae - archandroid
vivaldi - four seasons
daft punk - discovery
deltron 3030 - deltron 3030
discovery is a concept album? i didn't know dat. what's it about?
For a list that has more Marilyn Manson than King Crimson, Genesis or Rush, you really did hit on some excellent pieces of music.
Fuck you for no Rush and #8
Correct Opeth album
But lol because 10 isn't Levi
2112 by Rush is not a concept album, only one song is, believe me it would be on this list if it was.
I've never been a big Genesis or Jethro Tull fan, SEBTP (Genesis) and Aqualung (Tull) are pretty good but not concepts.
Perhaps Animals could've deserved inclusion on this list but personally I prefer The Wall. In terms of Pink Floyd, my favourites in order are Wish You Were Here, Meddle, The Wall, Animals, Dark Side Of The Moon.
