Shocking Album Releases

There are bands that drop big bombshells with each album release, but some of these were huge and would change what you know about this band; and they are...
1Smashing Pumpkins
Adore

When Mellon Collie was released, no one figured the next Pumpkins release would be some weird electronic/goth album; but that's exactly what happened. The album was dark, gothic, long, and really strange. The album itself was commercial suicide, and eventually was the beginning of the end for the Pumpkins, but still, it was a pretty crazy album and definately unexpected.
2Radiohead
Kid A

With OK Computer, the album was odd, but there was still guitars, it was still rock, and it wasn't completely strange, and when Kid A dropped, fans stood their, mouths open, and definately shocked at the release of this album. Strangely cold, danceable at points, and a completely whacked out storyline...the album may have been a classic epic, but left many people scratching their head.
3U2
Pop

Since when was U2 danceable? Since Pop. The album took their electronic experimentation to an extreme, and the result was a disco influenced electric powerhouse, filled with crazy disco rockers like Discotechque, subdued electric ballads like Stare at the Sun...a truly execellent release.
4Green Day
American Idiot

Look, who could have thought Green Day would be punk idols in music today, when their first major album was in the early 1990s, and it seemed their biggest hits were in the early 90s? Not me, and this album may have been a big hit, but truly turned away a lot of long time fans.
5Nine Inch Nails
The Fragile

After the long absence from music, most people expected Reznor to make another The Downward Spiral, considering how popular that album was; but he didn't. A more stubborn, strange, atmospheric, and definately reliant on soundscape release by Trent Reznor stood the test of time, and showed that Trent isn't any other musician.
6Nirvana
In Utero

With Nevermind, the album's poppy hooks attracted fans, who were also delighted by the album's grungy and heavy guitar tracks, but In Utero, the album's dark vibes, strange tempos, and almost Bleach-like messiness made the album a truly tough listen and a definite shock.
7Pink Floyd
Animals

Dang, man, where'd this come from? A raw, almost acoustic album from the 'Floyd lacking many aspects of psychedelica? Yes, and it was still a definite success.
8R.E.M.
Monster

R.E.M. was all pop-hooks and jangle-pop, but they made a radical change into heavy, distorted, lo-fi indie rock. The album was raw, and sounded as if R.E.M. recorded it before they ever got popular; as it wasn't as catchy, fun, or accessible, and was a truly excellent album.
9Nine Inch Nails
Year Zero

With Teeth made most people think Nine Inch Nails would go all out mainstream with their next album; but that's the exact opposite. Trying to be completely strange courtesy of really heavy electric noises and tracks, covered on top by a storyline as in depth as The Wall, and top it all of with really good music, and you've got Year Zero.
10Metallica
St. Anger

With all of the success of Metallica's trash rock, St. Anger saw Metallica go back to trash metal; and it didn't work. At all. The album was so desperate, raw, and irritating, that it shows Metallica doesn't make good music at all anymore.
