There was a nice sense of community, because I could make a list and I would value everyone's comment (or at least know whose opinions to disregard). Now, aside from a few standouts, I feel like this site is one homogenous blob of unfunny kids trying to troll, reviews that haven't been thought through, and general shittiness.

I'm just saying that there are a shit ton of new users and, compared to how it felt back in '09 or even '10, very few people take anything seriously at all (as opposed to demonstrating a fine balance between intelligent humor and reasonable music discussion).

Willie 01.25.12	I know it's not what you meant. I'm half way through a bottle of Endorush and full of energy (which my body mostly turns into sarcasm). At any rate, I disagree. When people (that aren't just out trolling) first get to the site they make an effort to figure out who knows what and to appear serious and knowledgeable and not draw negative attention. There is still a less serious group around the site, but you, as a new user, gloss over it. So, yes, you end up knowing just about everyone and you make an effort to talk to everyone. As you get more comfortable with the site you stop paying attention to the 'new guys' and so it starts to feel like one giant blog of faceless people. You also stop glossing over the less serious users and instead start to totally notice them (something that seems to really increase as people 'move up' the sputnik ladder for some reason). There have always been trolls and people that aren't looking for any kind of serious discussion. As for not knowing the new people here, that would be your fault. I bet if you looked back at comments from your first year compared to now, you'd notice that you made more of an effort to talk to new users as much as established ones. Just look at the amount of comments a new user review gets compared to someone established -- no one tries to know the new guys. Just saying.

Sowing 01.25.12	I pretty much agree with what you said, I definitely don't pay as much attention to new users anymore because I am comfortable with the users I know and the ones I share similarities with. Wasn't trying to bitch really, just made an observation that I thought pertained to me but (apparently) is quite common among the older users according to your wall of text.
Willie 01.25.12	I 'people watch' and it's a trend I've seen over and over on this site. It's also fun to watch how people change as they go from 'general user' to 'contrib' and especially 'contrib' to 'staff' -- Deviant used to be such a nice guy ;)

I probably deserve a classic williebuttfisting for not trying as hard to develop rapport with newer users (which having a job has had a lot to do with the amount of time I spend doing that) but outside of that I don't really see myself as one of those guys who let being staffed go to their head.

I don't really think that much has changed at all. The number of new users is about the same, but a lot of the older users have left. I think that's what is causing the "problem".
