12.18.11 | Great list, really dig 3,5,6, and one album from 9. Tankard and Rammstein rule face too. |

12.18.11 | Thanks JT.
Yes I know you like Destruction a lot. I never was a die-hard fan but these guys were extreme influential so I've decided to include them here.
If you don't know Running Wild, don't miss their early stuff. Cool heavy/speed metal.

Thanks m/
Indeed. It was hard to leave Rammstein behind. Well...since they are difficult to label I've decided to include them only in my first comment. But Rammstein rules damn hard, specially their first 3 albums. |
JamieTwort
12.18.11 | @Notrap: I can understand not being a die-hard Destruction fan especially considering the terrible production of most of thier early albums but I love thier almost tech-thrash sound on albums like Eternal Devastation. |
TheNotrap
12.18.11 | @Acanthus
Blind Guardian is one of the greatest German power metal bands...Impossible not to include them ;-) |

12.18.11 | I can get over Rammsteing not being here, because even though they are really fun and most definitely a favorite they really pale in comparison to most of these bands legacy's; great list sir. |
Tyrael
12.18.11 | Rammstein's latest is their best imo but they made a lot of good shit |
ValeriusTheImmortal
12.18.11 | sodom is completely overrated as well. |

12.18.11 | i know how to thrash. That's why I hear them ripping Slayer riffs off left and right. Maybe go back and listen to Slayer jackass |
TheNotrap
12.18.11 | @Valerius
Protector's Golem is classic stuff no doubt. Morgoth's cursed is also cool. I'm not familiar with the other bands tough.
"sodom is completely overrated as well."
C'mon dude...their first albums are extreme influential stuff. Don't you like Persecution Mania or Agent Orange?
|
TheNotrap
12.18.11 | Sodom's In War and Pieces is also great btw. |

Edguy is cool. I probably should include them in my first comment. |
Relinquished
12.18.11 | awesome list |
ValeriusTheImmortal
12.18.11 | persecution mania is probably their best but every time I hear Agent Orange and the blatant Slayer rip offs it irks the shit out of me. after that I didn't check any more of them out. Kreator owns the shit out of them and was far more influential. I think you are stretching Sodom's influence a bit. they aren't *influencing* as much as they are *influenced*, imo. |

12.18.11 | @Valerius
Agent Orange isn't their most influential album, only my fav and their best in my humble opinion.
Their most influential stuff is In The Sign Of Evil and Obsessed by Cruelty.
I disagree when you say they "rip off" Slayer. Sodom's songwriting is closer to death metal than Slayer. |
JamieTwort
12.18.11 | @Notrap: Awesome song m/ |

Great you like JT. Purgatory was released in 88 specially for their live album "Ready For Boarding".
Extremely unknown song but one of my favourites. |
ValeriusTheImmortal
12.18.11 | Obsessed by Cruelty is rather an underwhelming album. What did it do that Endless Pain didn't do a year before, but twice as good? I'll check out In The Sign of Evil, though. |
TheNotrap
12.18.11 | What did it do that Endless Pain didn't do a year before, but twice as good?
Well Endless Pain was definitely an influential album. However don't forget that In The Sign Of Evil and Obsessed by Cruelty were also extremely influential to the new extreme metal scene. The first wave of black metal included bands such as Sodom, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Destruction or Bathory. |
ValeriusTheImmortal
12.18.11 | In the sign of evil is pretty good. I can give these guys some credit for this. |
TheNotrap
12.18.11 | ^
"Outbreak of Evil" and "Blasphemer" are absolute classic stuff. |
TheNotrap
12.18.11 | And don't forget that "In the Sign of Evil" was released in 1984. Probably only Bathory was heavier at the time. |
ValeriusTheImmortal
12.18.11 | I can see that, this definitely has more of a black metal vibe to it than later stuff. Vocal effects are nice. nice riffs, decent production. Yeah, good stuff. |
TheNotrap
12.18.11 | http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2noJCsIQ11Q
^Sodom's first demo. Released in 1982!
We can see that Venom was probably their biggest influence at this time. |
ValeriusTheImmortal
12.18.11 | ok you are right. this demo rules. and that first ep is great. |
ValeriusTheImmortal
12.18.11 | lol, this demo is actually pretty damn insane thrash. the first ep is nice black metal. idk what happened to these guys on the first LP, though. |
TheNotrap
12.18.11 | Basically in the early/mid-80's almost all European extreme acts were extremely influenced by Venom. That's why bands like Hellhammer, Sodom, Destruction, Bathory or even Tormentor/Kreator had satanic themes. They were just trying to break boundaries and make the heaviest sound known by man.
"idk what happened to these guys on the first LP"
Sodom just tried to evolved the thrash/black metal formula of their first EP. "Obsessed by Cruelty" was extremely influential to the black metal scene (2 Wave). Euronymous always loved this album. He also named his label "Deathlike Silence Productions" due to Obsessed by Cruelty's opening track. |
ValeriusTheImmortal
12.18.11 | nice to know. It still hasn't struck a chord with me, yet. The impact of this demo was immediate, and the quality of that EP was immediate as well. |
ValeriusTheImmortal
12.18.11 | which came first No Life Till Leather or Witching Metal |
Hordewolf
12.18.11 | "sodom is completely overrated as well."
Have you even heard thrash.
|
Hordewolf
12.18.11 | Also, where's the Black Metal and stuff like Die Apokalyptischen Reiter, Exumer, Final Breath ect.? |
TheNotrap
12.18.11 | "which came first No Life Till Leather or Witching Metal"
Well both were released in 82. I believe Metallica's demo was released on July. I really don't know if Sodom's demo was released earlier.
But "Witching Metal" is almost an extreme experience. Angelripper was just trying to make the most voracious sound possible. "No Life Till Leather" is definitely more mature, a solid base to the first thrash metal album ever released.
"No Life Till Leather" and "The Soundhouse Tapes" are the most influential demo tapes ever released. |
Jethro42

ValeriusTheImmortal
12.18.11 | this damn demo is kind of mind blowing. this is the heaviest shit I've heard from that time period. it's faster, thrashier, and blacker than Venom. |
ThyCrossAwaits
12.18.11 | 4, 5, and 9 most definitely. Still needs Rammstein. |

ValeriusTheImmortal
12.18.11 | I haven't heard this demo before, Horde. Sodom's later work is a bit overrated imo, but this demo is pretty damn revolutionary, and their EP is great, although nothing that wasn't done by others by that time. |

In Europe, only Hellhammer, Tormentor, Bathory, Destruction and a few others extremely underground bands.
The thrash/black metal genre was just beginning.

01.19.14 | Are there any good German metalcore/hardcore bands that are active out there? It seems like that genre
