| Acanthus: Strange 2011
Here's some of the highlights of my year, which has been both bad
and good. New artists wowed, old artists let me down, etc. List is
divided into Industrial (used as a broad term), Other, and Bad. | 1 | | Industrial
55% of my pie chart | 2 | | Unter Null Moving On
Why I had stayed away from Miss Null is quite beyond me, but this album
(the deluxe edition) was like an emotional shockwave. Filled with female
angst, a nice use of classical influences, and some fast BPM's made me fall
in love with this album - anyone who ever went through an emotional time
with a friend or with a breakup should feel right at home. | 3 | | Die Sektor Applied Structure In A Void
This year found Die Sektor moving from the harsh sounds of their "youth"
and into something a bit more laid back. If this changed put off some of you
I must say you're missing out, go check out "Dissector" for an excellent
example of what this album has to offer. | 4 | | [:SITD:] Icon:Koru
Harder hitting than past albums but still enjoyable, SITD really have made
quite an album. Containing an entertaining mix of German and English
vocals this album blew me away - an excellent album for the dancefloor too
I might add. | 5 | | Dance or Die Nostradamnation
"4 3 2 1" is the reason I looked into this album, and for a band that took a
10 YEAR break it's quite an accomplishment. Sadly the album isn't all like
that track, but it's good nonetheless. | 6 | | Acretongue Strange Cargo
Cover art can grab me like no other, and this has gorgeous artwork. Inside
the music is pretty good too, a bit laid back for most club nights but great to have on while you do stuff around the house or drive. The debut it a bit
better, but sadly wasn't released this year. | 7 | | SAM Brainwasher
The ProNoize record label has earned much love from me, and this album is
the main cause. Filled with a sound that I've not been able to find
anywhere else and a style that I adore SAM took over my decks as well as
my hard drive quite quickly - if you ever need to make someone dance but
they don't like industrial ProNoize and SAM are your friend. | 8 | | Phosgore Warhead
Phosgore debuted with Domination, but Warhead see's the DJ turned
producer truly gain his footing. It's fun, catchy, signed to ProNoize, and
doesn't sound like generic aggro-tech anymore - win's all around. | 9 | | Haujobb Dead Market
The first Haujobb EP in years featured some great remixes as well as some
catchy albeit downtempo tracks. It was nice to hear the band go in a new
direction, his synth lines and layers are masterful here. | 10 | | Imperative Reaction Surface
Another E.P. but this one is far more club-friendly. Imperative Reaction
released their best track as the single from their upcoming self-titled and
then handed it over to some fine artists to get mangled and fine tuned for
the listeners pleasure. Tracks 4-7 are all killer imo | 11 | | Haujobb New World March
More Haujobb? Yes. The new album dropped quietly and is really really
slow, killing almost all energy the E.P. might of had whatsoever. It's good,
but nothing more than great at times. | 12 | | CygnosiC Fallen
The debut was wonderful... sadly this is more of the same. The same tricks
only a bit more polished great the listener, but coming from a relatively unknown artist this isn't a bad sophomore release at all. | 13 | | CTRL Make Things Right
VNV Nation, Seabound, and Assemblage 23 had an orgy - CTRL was the
result. Make Things Right is catchy, upbeat, a wonderful futurepop outing
into the world of downtrodden VNV-esque laments and beauty. | 14 | | Encephalon The Transhuman Condition
While these Canadians might have taken years to get out of the "we've
only one E.P." stage the result isn't too terrible, in fact it's rather good.
Sadly the sound from their E.P. is replaced by the group dipping their foot
into multiple genre's - if you ask me they had their sound nailed with
Drowner. | 15 | | Binary Park Worlds Collide
Another new artist, and again they are subtle and QUIET. However well Binary Park do this it really isn't anything new, rather it's just "good" | 16 | | Blutengel Tränenherz
After years of being "so-so" Blutengel once again gains their stride and
crafts a truly wonderful album (deluxe edition is a marvelous listen straight
through, all 33 tracks). This really blew my mind, and had me singing lines in
German for days after. | 17 | | Binary Park The Deviated
7 months after their debut Binary Parl come back with a 10 track E.P..... and what a comeback it is. Filled with new found energy and a great vocal
direction this surpasses the debut in everyway, go check this out first. | 18 | | Acylum Karzinom
Acylum once again delve into madness, and I love it! Once again the deluxe
edition proves the master, all those extra tracks give the listener even
more of a look into the dark that is Karzinom. | 19 | | Tüchters Letztes Gefecht Unbelehrbar
While not found until recently the cover art drew me in and the album never
let me go. THIS IS GOOD. Like, really good. A debut shouldn't be this good,
I'm in love with this. | 20 | | Other
The rest of whatever | 21 | | Mahria S/T Cassette
The female vocals on this are the draw for me, otherwise it'd come off as
rather bland. Really glad I looked at this album, also I'm the guy who put
them on youtube so yeah, \m/ | 22 | | Peter Murphy Ninth
Ah Peter Murphy, you came back and brought your roots with you. A
delightful explanation of why he is The Godfather of Goth. | 23 | | Arafel For Battles Once Fought
Released early in 2011 I never grew tired of the delightful mix of metal and
folk this album had to offer - I can still be heard humming the pirate diddy
from the opening track on occasion. | 24 | | Dammerfarben Im Abendrot
Quiet, German, cool artwork, this album hit all the right spots and was my
companion threw many a stroll on campus. Rec'd to my German teacher too,
not sure if she gave it a listen but at least I tried. | 25 | | The Birthday Massacre Imaginary Monsters
Remixes were horrible assaults on the originals, the B-sides however are
the real reason this is here - Chibi love, Chibi love. | 26 | | The Chemical Brothers Hanna: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
I swear I end up playing this once a day since I saw the film. One of the
better OST's this year, it also is fun to use in a club for short
interlude/beauty purposes. | 27 | | Reso Ishimura
I followed the first Dead Space religiously, so this was a fun E.P. for me. It's
quite good, if short, and though I might not get anything else by the group
this at least will garner some love. | 28 | | The Bad
Ugly, Traitors, Tease, etc | 29 | | VNV Nation Automatic
Thinking of this album still makes my hackles rise, this could have been so
good. I don't want to see them on this tour anymore, I'd rather just listen
to Judgement and be depressed at how large a liar Ronan and the bands
hype machine truly are. | 30 | | Imperative Reaction Imperative Reaction
After claims of re-inventing, and this being the deciding IR album, it really
was a flop. The single saw the potential, but it was squandered in bad
levels and generic "been there, done that" lyrics. | 31 | | Aesthetic Perfection All Beauty Destroyed

12.03.11 | Albums are not in order of "awesome to ok" btw | Acanthus
12.03.11 | Also curse the database not liking German punctuation.
| pizzamachine
12.03.11 | Good list!
VNV Nation, Seabound, and Assemblage 23 had an orgy - CTRL was the result.
Now I have to check it out. :) | Acanthus
12.03.11 | It's great, even bloc gave it his love! | MisterSteel
12.03.11 | I would say Moving On was 2010, but it's awesome enough that it deserves any attention that it gets. Looks like I have a good amount of stuff to check out. | Acanthus
12.03.11 | Thanks for the catch sir, I was debating on whether or not to throw 2010 albums on - looks like that was decide for me. If it helps I found it in 2011, so that's my excuse. | MisterSteel
12.03.11 | Sounds like a perfect excuse to me, her projects deserve all the noticing they can get. I've heard some of the stuff here, specifically Encephalon and Acylum stuck out to me amongst the stuff I've heard this year. | Acanthus
12.03.11 | I preferred Encephalon's EP personally, the album still has merit though | MisterSteel
12.03.11 | Never got around to checking out that EP, suppose I might as well now. The LP was good, it just took a few tracks to get going, but once it got there, I enjoyed myself.
Going through the versions of the Blutengel album, and I can't seem to find one with the 3rd CD link working. | Acanthus
12.03.11 | Yeah it took me awhile to find one, I think I started digging through Spanish blogs and whatnot | MisterSteel
12.03.11 | Haha, I found it about 10 seconds after I posted that comment, but thanks. Now I've got everything I was missing from this list. Fun times should await. | Acanthus
12.03.11 | Yes indeed, some really are quite superb. | MO
12.03.11 | nice, haven't heard too much of this but what I have is great stuff
my list'll be similar but obscure death metal | Acanthus
12.03.11 | Rec's that aren't the norm are the point of yearly lists imo, no point saying "Hey, I'm just like you!" or anything. | bloc
12.03.11 | 2 was released in 2010 but who cares it rules : )
And I loved 29 and 30!
| Acanthus
12.03.11 | I know sir, to me however they were disappointments (IRs E.P. was stronger than the LP imo). | bloc
12.03.11 | And 12 is probably my top industrial of the year. But there are still a few albums I have yet to hear this year (COUGH...AMDUSCIA...COUGH).
And Cant, you gotta check out CTRL's Loaded Weapons And Darkened Days album. Its song structures are more rock oriented but it truly rules. | MisterSteel
12.03.11 | There is new Amduscia afoot? | Acanthus
12.03.11 | I've been meaning to get most of their stuff, my band mate played with them this year if I remember correctly. | bloc
12.03.11 | Yes sir Steel just released today. Same with Diffuzion and Psy'Aviah. | Acanthus
12.03.11 | Same with Diffuzion
Yeah need to give that one a go, that track I linked to you was quite good. | bloc
12.03.11 | Got about half way through it today. Seemed a lot more dark and minimal compared to their debut. | Acanthus
12.03.11 | Weird, I found their debut to be already quite toned down in comparison to a few other acts. Either way it'll be nice to have, at least a few tracks will make it to the club I'd imagine. | MisterSteel
12.03.11 | "Yes sir Steel just released today. Same with Diffuzion and Psy'Aviah."
Awesome, had no idea these were on their way. | bloc
12.03.11 | "Weird, I found their debut to be already quite toned down in comparison to a few other acts. Either way it'll be nice to have, at least a few tracks will make it to the club I'd imagine. "
It's been a while since I last listened to the debut but I could have sworn it was pretty action packed. Either way, I really need to listen to it again after listening to the new one to make sure.
"Awesome, had no idea these were on their way."
Hell, I only learned about these albums today as well. | Acanthus
12.03.11 | Today's been a music finding day if there ever was one. | bloc
12.03.11 | Shit I have so many 2011 albums I still need to listen to but I honestly have no motivation to do so. | Acanthus
12.03.11 | I'm pretty content, I mean sometimes I find random gems but for the most part the big one's have come and gone already. | MisterSteel
12.03.11 | I'll probably have to wait a little bit to try them out, I'm no good at finding new albums usually. Suppose I have enough to look through anyway. :P | Acanthus
12.03.11 | Yeah I get an overload sometimes and it seemingly takes forever to get through them all especially if they're good. | HeathenEarthling
12.03.11 | Looks like you had a good year finding new music. :)
I mean this as an honest non-judgmental question: Is your interest in Industrial pretty much exclusively focused on
EBM/electro stuff? I'm always looking for more Industrial recs (see my recent list) but I'm more into the other subgenres
of it. | Acanthus
12.03.11 | I normally stick to albums with a decidedly "newer" sound - for example I don't like Skinny Puppy or Ministry very much nor any of their side projects but I can however get into The Revolting Cocks on occasion. As for helping with rec's I recommend Meatplow or Haz for stuff similar to what was on your list.
I mostly want things that people can move too, or that make me happy while I DJ. | Acanthus
12.03.11 | Also my tastes are heavily influenced by the fact that there are 2 other industrial DJ's I share a night with, and we each need to have our own musical identity imo | HeathenEarthling
12.03.11 | Thanks. | Acanthus
12.03.11 | No problem, either of those users should be able to help you more than I. | bloc
12.03.11 | They're the same user ;) | Acanthus
12.03.11 | I'd heard that before but couldn't figure out if it was legitimate or not - now I know. | MisterSteel
12.03.11 | Angel's list might have something in it for you as well:
