WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | great movie but
1. not close to the best coen brothers
2. should not have won over There Will Be Blood for best picture |

08.29.11 | i prefered zodiac to twbb and ncfom. but that was just an incredible year for movies |
WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | at least DD-L won best actor
seriously there is no better actor than him. prove me wrong |
taxidermist
08.29.11 | I own that movie. So badass. |
americanmusicmachine
08.29.11 | robert mitchum, john wayne, james stewart, warren oates, harry dean stanton, robert duvall, timothy olyphant, etc.
but yh ddl's real good specially in that movie. i find it funny that an actor as picky as him ends up in nine |
foreverendeared
08.29.11 | Exactly what WeepingBanana said. |
WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | in my opinion, not quite as good as fargo. probably about on par with o brother where art thou |

08.29.11 | I actually haven't seen There Wil Be Blood. I own the movie too, lol. Gonna put it on my watch list. |

08.29.11 | love that film |

08.29.11 | "robert mitchum, john wayne, james stewart, warren oates, harry dean stanton, robert duvall, timothy olyphant, etc."
Is this supposed to be actors better than Daniel Day-Lewis? If so, you're an idiot.
The Big Lebowski is my favorite Coen Bros film, but No Country For Old Men and True Grit are just as brilliant. |
WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | but yeah sam you're spot on about the pacing. coen brothers are always great at pacing their movies. have you ever seen Miller's Crossing? that movie flows like a motherfucker |
Trebor.
08.29.11 | The Big Lebowski is my favorite, but No Country is second |
Slum
08.29.11 | I liked the movie but it doesn't come close to there will be blood tbh |
renegadestrings
08.29.11 | move was good, but they left out a couple of parts from the book that i really enjoyed. but that's true of most flicks i assume. the pacing was still excellent |

08.29.11 | You don't have to do this
People always say that
What?
They say "you don't have to do this."
great movie, ending is excellent |
americanmusicmachine
08.29.11 | yeah paxman i'm an idot you fucking dickhead, for saying fucking Robert Duvall and James Stewart two of the most well respected and admired actors in American cinema might be better than DDL.
Just watch Paris, TX and tell me that Harry Dean Stanton's acting in that isn't on the level of DDL in TWBB or any other film he's been in.
just watch this motherfucker:

08.29.11 | There Will Be Blood wasn't that good. At least not until the end where he beats that kid with a bowling pin. That was pretty funny. |
foreverendeared
08.29.11 | I absolutely love There Will Be Blood. |
Kubrick
08.29.11 | "should not have won over There Will Be Blood for best picture"
Agreed... There Will Be Blood is incredible. No Country is still awesome though. |
Trebor.
08.29.11 | There Will Be Blood is amazing |
WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | sometimes i base a movie off of how many memorable scenes there are in it
every fucking scene in there will be blood is memorable |

08.29.11 | True Grit was fantastic. "I do not entertain hypotheticals, the world as it is is vexing enough." |
kirinphonetic
08.29.11 | No Country for Old Men and There Will be Blood are two of my all time favorite movies. They are actually the only two posters I have in my room right now. Both are amazing, I could watch either one over and over and over again. If I had to pick one, I'd say There Will Be Blood, almost solely on Day Lewis's acting. |
Trebor.
08.29.11 | True Grit was anything but boring |
WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | yeah True Grit was great. i like it more than No Country i think
when Rooster was carrying her to the house at the end, i swear to god i was about to cry |
WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | True Grit is the ultimate story of companionship |
FrankRedHot
08.29.11 | There Will Be Blood is one of the most boring, pretentious films I have seen to date. While Daniel Day Lewis won for Best Actor(much deserved), that's no reason to rate the film higher than No Country For Old Men. |
WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | nick, not only is Daniel Day-Lewis' acting flawless but the cinematography and tone are absolutely perfect. the story isn't as riviting as no country but it's better in pretty much all other aspects |
Ovrot
08.29.11 | i drink your milkshake
i drink it up |
FrankRedHot
08.29.11 | "nick, not only is Daniel Day-Lewis' acting flawless but the cinematography and tone are absolutely perfect. the story isn't as riviting as no country but it's better in pretty much all other aspects"
Cinematography and tone don't automatically equal an Oscar winner. You have to grab the viewer's attention first and foremost, and the story of There Will Be Blood was lacking. Day-Lewis is one of, maybe THE finest actor of our time, but he picked what I thought was a sub-par movie to make his comeback.
I still enjoyed the movie, just not as much as No Country for Old Men. |
WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | understandable. No Country was probably more immediately gratifying for me but TWWB grew on me the more i watched it and thought about it.
the image of Daniel Plainview carrying H.W. away from the fire accident is seared into my brain as one of the most memorable images in cinematic history |
faux
08.29.11 | twbb is good but too heavy handed and feels like it is self consciously intended to be a classic, Important Movie |
FrankRedHot
08.29.11 | ^This is perfect.
"the image of Daniel Plainview carrying H.W. away from the fire accident is seared into my brain as one of the most memorable images in cinematic history"
I agree, but that's not the movie. That's Day-Lewis' acting that did that. There are plenty movies with a scene like that. |
ziroth
08.29.11 | it's an ok movie but the first 30 minutes are SOOO effing slow. |
foreverendeared
08.29.11 | There Will Be Blood was just one of those films that captured me from beginning to end. |
americanmusicmachine
08.29.11 | this best thing about twbb is the "i'm an oil man" speech in the beginning. |
Slum
08.29.11 | "and the story of There Will Be Blood was lacking"
let's not be silly now |
WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | yeah i'm with foreverendeared here |
FrankRedHot
08.29.11 | I'm not being silly. I wasn't attracted to that movie because of the storytelling. I was attracted to that movie because of the incredible acting. |
WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | i also probably have a strong bias on everything DD-L is in
he's the sole reason why The Crucible is at all watchable |
FrankRedHot
08.29.11 | ^Agreed. Personally, his best movie is Gangs of New York. |
Slum
08.29.11 | you realize the movie was about a character and not boomboom explosions right |
FrankRedHot
08.29.11 | "you realize the movie was about a character and not boomboom explosions right"
You realize that you're making a very incorrect assumption that I'm attracted to big, dumb, loud movies, correct? |
Slum
08.29.11 | well when you say one of the best screenplays in the past decade has poor storytelling i get concerned |
FrankRedHot
08.29.11 | Where did I say it was "poor?" Lacking=/=poor. It just means that it left something to be desired.
|
Slum
08.29.11 | lol alright. what did you desire |
FrankRedHot
08.29.11 | More character development, more balance(first half was strong, second half was incredibly boring), no
Paul Dano(he did not belong in this movie).
Now, you can continue to be condescending. |
foreverendeared
08.29.11 | The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
There Will Be Blood
Road to Perdition
The Thin Red Line
Citizen Kane
2001: A Space Odyssey
Rumble Fish
Amelie
Chinatown
Once Upon A Time In America
all equally beautiful movies |
WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | man, i appreciate Citizen Kane for everything it did for cinema, but i was just bored to tears watching it. maybe cause someone ruined the ending for me, but still |
FrankRedHot
08.29.11 | Be careful, Weeping! Slum might think you're an idiot for finding it boring!
I, however, find Citizen Kane to be the ultimate. |
Slum
08.29.11 | lol chill out dude, just talking about a movie. Paul Dano's portrayal was great, though not perfect, he did what he needed to do with the character. Daniel's character slowly evolves from the first scene where he's digging himself, to his lease in little boston, to him killing Henry and then comes to the perfect climax in the last 20 minutes. So, you saying it needed more character development is confusing, what more did you want |
coneren
08.29.11 | you now what a good fucking movie is? the jerk |
Slum
08.29.11 | i couldn't finish citizen kane when i first tried to watch it but a couple years later i gave it another try and loved it |
FrankRedHot
08.29.11 | Daneil's character slowly evolves? What do you mean? I knew exactly what he was going to be at the end of the movie right from the word "go."
Dano's acting was horrible. |
foreverendeared
08.29.11 | I saw it for the first time when I was 12 and loved it. |
WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | i think what FrankRedHot meant was Daniel Plainview character didn't really change. his intentions and motivations remained the same throughout the whole movie.
i personally thought character development wasn't very important for this movie cause there really wasn't a clear protagonist and antagonist, but that's just me |
Slum
08.29.11 | well it was pretty obvious he was going to be an asshole, but watching everything that contributed to that slowly dig into his character was brilliant. Dano played an over the top character as it should have been played, completely over the top. |
jefflebowski
08.29.11 | FrankRedHot is right up to a point, but TWBB is deliberately character-based rather than story driven - it takes a back seat to Day-Lewis, effectively. No Country is pretty much the exact opposite |
FrankRedHot
08.29.11 | "i personally thought character development wasn't very important for this movie cause there really wasn't a clear protagonist and antagonist, but that's just me"
Ummm, you need character development in every movie. It's just so easy to get seduced by great acting that one can forgive other aspects. I just couldn't in this case.
Slum, there's a difference between "over-the-top" and horrible, and I believe it was the latter in this case. |
WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | "Ummm, you need character development in every movie. It's just so easy to get seduced by great acting that one can forgive other aspects. I just couldn't in this case."
i can think of plenty of awesome movies that didn't have much character development |
Slum
08.29.11 | people love the fuck out of 2001 a space odyssey and that barely had characters let alone development |
foreverendeared
08.29.11 | Yeah plenty of fantastic movies with zero character development. |
FrankRedHot
08.29.11 | "i can think of plenty of awesome movies that didn't have much character development"
I'm not debating you on that. That wasn't my point. My point is every great movie needs great character development, but you can easily forgive the lack of it when the acting/story is great. |
WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | makes sense i guess. preference |
jefflebowski
08.29.11 | No country for old men hardly has ANY character development. You know virtually nothing about the protagonist or his motivations throughout the entire movie.
Yet it's still awesome |
FrankRedHot
08.29.11 | You can always forgive certain movies for lacking certain aspects of cinema perfection when other aspects of the film are so great.
Does that make sense? I highly doubt it. I'm a bit drunk. |
CrisStyles
08.29.11 | Agreed that Gangs of New York is Day Lewis' best movie. |
foreverendeared
08.29.11 | Daniel Day-Lewis' character didn't really develop or change, but his son did. |
WeepingBanana
08.29.11 | as far as D-L's performances go, GNY and TWWB are tied
but as a movie overall TWWB is better. though the "WHOOPSY DAISY" part of GNY is so funny |
paxman
08.29.11 | Americanmusicmachine: actually, I was referring to the sore thumb in your list of actors better than Daniel Day-Lewis.
Timothy Olyphant. |
FrankRedHot
08.29.11 | Except for Deadwood.
But that was a TV show. |
foreverendeared
08.29.11 | lol Timothy Olyphant is not very good. He plays the same character in like every movie. Harry Dean Stanton, however, is pretty phenomenal. |
CrisStyles
08.29.11 | I really enjoy Olyphant in Justified. |
jefflebowski
08.29.11 | I was too busy worshipping Ian McShane in Deadwood to really notice Olyphant. I guess he was pretty good though |
foreverendeared
08.29.11 | Like I said, he's okay, he's just pretty much typecast at this point. |
jefflebowski
08.29.11 | Ryan Gosling looks pretty awesome in Drive |
foreverendeared
08.29.11 | I like him in Stay |
FrankRedHot
08.29.11 | I loved Ian McShane up until I saw him in that movie with Andy Samberg.
I lost all respect for him after that. |
jefflebowski
08.29.11 | He'll always be Al Swearengen to me. In anything else he's just Ian McShane |
paxman
08.30.11 | Yeah, I don't want to hear the name Timothy Olyphant when we're discussing good actors. He's merely adequate. Ryan Gosling, on the other hand, is fantastic, and I can't wait to see Drive. Drive also has another of my favorite actors: Bryan Cranston. |
