Acanthus
08.20.11 | Love to play these albums when no one is around, full level awesomeness. |
Trebor.
08.20.11 | Modest Mouse |
Antipunk
08.20.11 | Thrice. |
Vesper
08.20.11 | You're not kidding about unconditional love if you put Making Monsters on here...
My band's AFI, because they started my musical development when I was twelve (I had previously only listened to classical music, haha), so they pretty much got me onto more abrasive music (even if they aren't anymore...). |
jayfatha
08.20.11 | Tech N9ne. Combichrist fucking rule |
someguest
08.20.11 | Eminem for me. |
Acanthus
08.20.11 | AFI is one of mine as well, I started with their newer stuff and worked my way back - still have a few albums to go however.
Making Monsters wasn't that bad, it was a solid 3 (wrote a huge review on it too. Obviously not the same work, but still not horrible though it could have dipped into average or below quite easily. |
jayfatha
08.20.11 | Making Monsters has some great songs on it |
Acanthus
08.20.11 | I listened to it back to back for hours while writing the review, though tbh I've heard "Fuck Machine" spun during the local DJ sets far to often. |
Vesper
08.20.11 | Lol, I've listened to StS probably nearly 300 times by now... That, Blacks Sails, and Art of Drowning are my favorite by them.
I can't deal with Andy's "singing", non-shouting voice for some reason, so I really couldn't listen to it more than a few times. I like the first three albums on your list, although not as much as I used to, because I associate them with my scummy ex, haha. |
AngelofDeath
08.20.11 | Probably Opeth. Or Ulver. Or Boris. I guess Peste Noire too. |
jayfatha
08.20.11 | Fuck Machine was never one of my favorites to begin with. I liked Through These Eyes of Pain |
Acanthus
08.20.11 | I've got all of those as well, all great albums!
I can understand, I played Combichrist nonstop during a rough patch in my life; can't really say I'll ever dislike them. |
Acanthus
08.20.11 | For me it was "Never Surrender" though it's been a while since I spun it. |
foreverendeared
08.20.11 | Sigur Ros
Drudkh
WITTR
MF Grimm
Deftones
Tool
The Roots
Brand New
Mew
Ulver
Eels |
Vesper
08.20.11 | Yeah, that's why you picked them, isn't it? Hahaha. They do put on a great live show.
I'd also say Opeth and NIN are pretty solid for me. Oh, and I'm always a sucker for The Sisters of Mercy. |
Acanthus
08.20.11 | Opeth has ONE track that I can love to death, I need to search for others like it. NIN was ruined by an ex of mine, though luckily she never had The Fragile - I've yet to buy it (don't want to download it) but I love that album. I'm a sucker for Bauhaus personally.
|
MountainDewMe
08.20.11 | Breaking Benjamin. |
Acanthus
08.20.11 | Dude I've got all their albums (physical copies) except the compilation - band's not bad |
toxin.
08.20.11 | I thought you were talking about dogs |
Vesper
08.20.11 | Which one?
Ah, that sucks, but at least one of the best ones wasn't ruined! Damn exes.
Actually, come to think of it, NIN ought to have been ruined by my same ex, but, eh, my love for Trent Reznor seems to have prevented it.
Bauhaus is great - do you like any other goth rock/post-punk bands? It's too bad I missed their last tour... but Peter Murphy has held my hand for three seconds before, haha. |
bloc
08.20.11 | I probably have lots, but one you would be most familiar with is The Birthday Massacre :) |
Acanthus
08.20.11 | Damn ex's indeed!
Peter Murphy's newest album was god-like, I love his voice! I like most of the original post-punk groups, though I don't have many/any albums by most of them I wanted to know who they were when I started into the genre.
I love "The Leper Affinity" to death, I rocked out to that track so many times in my dorm last year! |
Acanthus
08.20.11 | Lol bloc I wouldn't have expected any different :D |
PedalToTheMetal
08.20.11 | brand new and mewithoutYou, first proper bands i got into |
Acanthus
08.20.11 | Hmm my first "proper" band, as in the first CD I bought, was Muse - Black Holes and Revelations. |
Vesper
08.20.11 | 54 and still awesome as ever, really. He has the best stage antics, haha.
By "original post-punk groups", do you mean like Bauhaus, Siouxsie, Killing Joke, The Cure, etc.? All excellent, but it's too bad not that many people seem to like post-punk on here. Well, not that it attracts that many young fans anymore... :/
I almost always listen to Opeth albums the whole way through; I can't just listen to one song, haha. Do you not like the rest of Blackwater Park? |
AngelofDeath
08.20.11 | The Twilight Is My Robe is one of the best songs ever fashioned by a human being. |
Acanthus
08.20.11 | Yes I mean those, The Cure I have albums from the others I have choice hits/videos; I love the prominent bass lines that Post-Punk has, not to mention I've been able to see a local-ish band in the genre (or similar genre) live.
The rest is a let down, the melodic parts in "The Leper Affinity" work (for me) because of the growls and harsher elements whereas the other tracks tone down the "brutality" and amp up the melodic style. I can give them props for being a great band and they are very talented, I just can't listen to their melodic songs for very long as they pale in comparison to the growls. |
Acanthus
08.20.11 | @Angel - never heard it, will youtube it
Edit: I can hear the beauty but I still wish for brutality, not sure why this is the case with only Opeth (maybe the hype)? |
Vesper
08.20.11 | Ooh, yes, the bass line in "Lucretia, My Reflection" is one of my favorites and definitely a reason why I'm a sucker for Sisters of Mercy, hahaha. Best song for goth clubbing. :D
So I gather you won't be picking up the new Opeth album when it drops, then? Haha, well, you should definitely check out their older stuff, then, like Orchid, which that song Angel recced is from. Also, "The Moor" from Still Life (that album, in general). |
Vesper
08.20.11 | Also, maybe just check out Bloodbath, Mikael Akerfeldt's death metal band, if you want his growls with moar brutality. |
Acanthus
08.20.11 | A great track indeed, I love when the DJ's play that song! It's received a lot of play time in my CD player as well too.
I'll be sure to check out tracks from all of those albums then! |
iFghtffyrdmns
08.20.11 | Bomb the Music Industry!, the ultimate band for loving unconditionally. |
AngelofDeath
08.20.11 | If you don't like their mellower stuff, then yeah, you'll probably want to steer clear. But, for me, I love old-school prog, krautrock, and psychedelic music and think Mike has one of the best singing voices in music, so I'm still looking forward to it. |
Vesper
08.20.11 | Where are you from, Acanthus, that sounds so full of goth clubs? Hahaha. |
Acanthus
08.20.11 | More like industrial clubs, ironically enough I'm from Missouri. My bandmate just got done touring the East coast and brought back tales of the scene there, sadly our little fetish shows and normal nights are rather large even when compared to those in larger cities! We've currently got a weekly industrial/goth night that garners an ok/small crowd, and the fetish shows pull in a lot more as do the bands. It's a pretty cool thing to have going on here, I just wish I had a few thousand so I could renovate the place. |
ITsHxCTOASTER
08.20.11 | Boards of Canada probably has the most unconditional love from me |
Vesper
08.20.11 | Yeah, the goth/punk scenes have been choked out for the most part in cities even like New York, where I am, so most events are smaller than you'd think, so I'm not surprised you guys have a similar sized crowd, haha. I was actually most disappointed at the lack of record shops here that stock less mainstream metal/punk. There are seriously only two decent ones. :/
Although we do have things like goths having water gun fights in Washington Square Park, so there's that.
Yeah, I wish I had a million dollars so I could buy one of the riverside abandoned factories and convert it into some kind of alt hub... I better become a famous artist soon, hahaha. |
Obfuscation24
08.20.11 | ire said prussian blue so im passing it on to u |
Acanthus
08.20.11 | @Vesper - the venue we use changes themes every night so it's hard to make it "ours" - one of the DJ's and I are considering renting a warehouse for the events instead.
So your an artist? I've never really tried, but I've been offered modeling positions at the university before and have spent many hours sitting in art classes just watching people work. |
