06.03.11 | I think 8 would be interesting to translate to an acoustic guitar. |
psykonaut
06.03.11 | 15 is the first song i ever learned to play it's real easy man
also if you want a good place for lessons and stuff i recommend justinguitar.com it's fo free |
Eko
06.03.11 | awesome. for some reason I thought 15 sounded like it would be sort of hard but I'll give it a try. I'll check that site out too. |
EverythingEvil2113
06.03.11 | Well I just kind of learned on my own by looking at tabs and learning chords, but that did take a lot longer than if i would have actually gotten lessons or something. Oh and psykonaut is right, 15 is pretty easy to learn and might be a good one to try after learning the chords. |
WithHorsesInHerEyes
06.03.11 | Learn three chords then start a band. |
Eko
06.03.11 | meh one seems like plenty |
Eko
06.03.11 | Yeah spending the time and money on lessons seems like a pain too |
BSX
06.03.11 | Learn the names of the strings and how to make a G major, C major, E major, A major, E minor and A minor chord. Also practice finger exercise on the acoustic, it'll hurt your fingers more since the stringer are thicker but it'll be a breeze when you practice them on the electric (if you plan to play both). Oh and play songs you like, it help keep you motivated.
I'd say teach yourself first then look into taking lessons. Just make sure whoever you take them that you're vocal about what you want to learn otherwise they'll just teach you things they like. |
Trebor.
06.03.11 | Learn power chords and write your own simple songs.
You learn quicker playing your own shit. |
Oceanus
06.03.11 | Be sure to try and learn songs that you actually want to know how to play. If all you play are songs that you don't give two shits about, it will be much easier to stop giving two shits about learning and playing. That said, it is probably going to take awhile to build some callouses and get chord changes down, so don't be discouraged!
I'm self-taught and have never taken a lesson, so I can't really advise you there. Some times I find myself wishing I had some sort of technical training, and some times I am glad that I haven't had any. |
Bron-Yr-Aur
06.03.11 | just fucking do it until you don't suck

06.03.11 | i've been messing around with guitars for years and years as my dad and brothers all play. i don't know shit about chords other than basic D C E G A. i'm planning on writing (and finishing!) a song this summer with the help of some friends. good luck to us |
Awesomesauce
06.03.11 | Also, buy the most expensive gear possible. A road-worn Fender or one of those VOS Gibson reissues should do the trick. That way, people just assume you're awesome and you don't even really have to learn to play. Just look at Nathan Williams. |
mahan9792
06.03.11 | i'm not much of an acoustic player (i wish i was more into it), but i self taught myself with tabs. start with easy songs and you'll eventually get better and learn harder songs |
toxin.
06.03.11 | Eh, just play stuff you like. Learn the notes of the strings obviously, learn what a fret is. The basics. Learn your chords, practice your barre.
Try to practice both picking AND fingerstyle. #3 is one of the first songs I learned to play. It's challenging (in my opinion) for a beginner song, but it sounds cool and is fun to play. |
TomArnoldsArmpit
06.03.11 | Punk rock songs is where I started. It will help you get used to using your fretboard, and getting comfortable with basic chords. Once you get the hang of that, practice more difficult songs. Practice practice practice. |
telebyrd
06.03.11 | use your pinky on the fretboard from the beginning. |
