2011 - Spuds & Duds
1 Spuds
they rule
2Heinali and Matt Finney
Aint No Night

An effortless continuation of the experimental tendencies that defined their first three albums; Heinali's doom/shoegaze/ambient etc.. driven composition's reach new levels of intricacy and Matt Finney's lyrics are as hateful and rage-driven as ever. Fucking love it.
3Black Swan
The Quiet DIvide

Black Swan's first LP is my favorite ambient album ever - or at least was until I heard this, the perfect follow-up that essentially delivered everything I could have hoped for. More orchestrated yet also darker, it's the same great recipe with even more zest. BAM!
4Times of Grace
The Hymn of A Broken Man

Surprised? Times of Grace sounds exactly how they were expected to but who gives a fuck? Adam D. is still the master of catchy groove-laden guitar riffs, and Jesse Leach has never sounded better. You may enjoy AOJB more but in terms of technical skill, his vocals have greatly improved. A fun, catchy album that I don't take too seriously, hence why it has become one of my favorites from this year.
5Blut Aus Nord
777 - Sect(s)

Black metal from this year hasn't been overly impressive as of yet but that still hasn't stopped Blut Aus Nord from crafting a truly terrifying album. Chaos reigns rampant within 777, a record that recalls last years Paracletus in a way that is not (too) horribly derivative.
6Je Suis Le Petit Chevalier
Tropical Malady

Tropical Malady is an ambient drone interpretation of Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Tropical Malady; that means ritualistic drums, eerie chanted vocals and a truly haunting yet engaging atmosphere filled with blissful melodies, noisy interludes and a bunch of other awesome little eccentricities.

they drool
8Born of Osiris
The Discovery

The Discovery is not a horrible album but it certainly is not the album it was hyped up to be (cough bloc cough). Sure there are some cool moments ("Singularity" anyone?) but they are few and far amidst the cheesy second rate Children of Bodom synths and mostly uninspired deathcore/"tech death" fusion.
9Heretoir
Heretoir

Despite the fact that Heretoir has always been somewhat basic they've always been a shoegaze influenced black metal I enjoyed - well with the thoughts that they would one day progress. Their first album offered such a time to shine but instead they fucked it up, creating a derivative combination of shoegaze and BM that is more dull than Neige taking a piss.
10Protest The Hero
Scurrilous

Once again, Scurrilous isn't an album I dislike but I was really disappointed with it. Firstly the instrumentation while yes, technical and impressive sounds all too similar with all of its noodling. Secondly Rody Walker is not a good enough singer yet to stick with just clean vocals. Sure he has the range but he doesn't know how to apply it. Songs like "Hair- Trigger" and "Tandem" rule though.
11 Antediluvian
Revelations in Excrement

After Under of Asael ruled so hard, I expected this Canadian black/death crew to deliver another awesome album - needless to say, they didn't. Tuneless riffing, boring drums and a really lifeless production, this is one of this years biggest disappoints for me. Also I'm pretty sure they actually feature a pig snorkeling during the second track "At the Swirling Sprouts of Uncreation".
12Lifelover
Sjukdom

I can't for the life of me understand why anybody would like this album
