SeaAnemone
03.28.11 | my favorite book ever |
Enotron
03.28.11 | can't read this thread, still reading |
mynameischan
03.28.11 | it's a great book |
Xenophanes
03.28.11 | One of my faves, actually. So much to discuss,it's difficult to find a place to begin. |
Trebor17
03.28.11 | I don't read books |
LegendofPittman
03.28.11 | I want to read it so bad. I borrowed my brothers copy for a while, but I was younger and didn't read as much. |
KinkyFresh
03.28.11 | i haven't finished it yet either, but so far i can tell it will probably be my favorite book of all time. hey one question i have for you guys - did some guy actually find the book in the dead guys apartment, or is that part of the story? i haven't been able to figure that out. |
ButcheredChildren
03.28.11 | I have yet to read this. |
SeaAnemone
03.28.11 | you mean the papers covering every inch of the apt. in the beginning? yeah |
DiceMan
03.28.11 | Remarkably well written book |
acorncheese
03.28.11 | book is pretty rape, but i don't find it to be the absolute masterpiece that many others do. still love it though. |
mynameischan
03.28.11 | some of the johnny truant parts are a little much but yeah the book is something everyone should read |
whywontyoudie
03.28.11 | I've been debating on buying it, I guess I should go down to B&N and pick it up. |
KinkyFresh
03.28.11 | seaanemone, yeah its real or yeah its made up? |
acorncheese
03.28.11 | wasn't it a movie script? manuscript? fuck. been too long. |
mynameischan
03.28.11 | made up |
mothercountry
03.28.11 | wtf, it's not available on kindle. does it jump around a lot? |
balcaen
03.28.11 | i've read it twice now. i lend my copy out to friends occasionally, which is probably a little odd for them because i leave all my personal notes in it. haunting book though, shit. i frequently forgot that none of it is actually real, but i've had a few dreams of my house collapsing into an oblivious hole or simply a door appearing in my living room. epic, but tedious book. if you're iffy with MZD's writing style i do NOT suggest reading his other books.
it's become a trendy sort of thing lately. i heard this girl i know tell someone it was her favorite, but when i attempted to discuss it with her she said she never got through the book because it was "so slow and boring". eugh. too many mediocre bands have made reference to it. |
acorncheese
03.28.11 | i don't see how it could be read on a kindle. it's got a pretty "experimental" layout. |
balcaen
03.28.11 | ^ i'd just say it's "aesthetically fucked"
and a good 1/4 of the book is footnotes and |
Magus
03.28.11 | I just couldn't get into it. It's unlike anything I've ever read. I felt like I was just reading a textbook at certain parts. |
darlingfemmefatal
03.28.11 | Makes for such an amazing amazing reading experience!!! ahhhh! I am in love with that book from beginning to end! |
Crysis
03.28.11 | Such a fantastic book |
FreePizzaDay
03.28.11 | Strongly disliked the book. The formatting was just distracting and didn't add much to the story, and
the story, while intriguing at times, was just too convoluted for me. I simply did not understand what
was going on a lot of the time. |
ThirtySixChambers
03.28.11 | Yay a House of Leaves list. The book was simply fantastic. I can't tell you how many times throughout that story I was curled up in my bed with goosebumps. The way Danielewski described the shifting of house measurements and hallways is unlike any other narrative I've read. The turbulent feeling of anxiety in the book can be overwhelming at times but the more patience and time I put into the confusing story, the more enveloped I became. |
KinkyFresh
03.28.11 | its funny, the more negatively it makes me feel the more i want to keep reading it.
p.s. can somebody rec me some folk albums similar to 2? |
ThirtySixChambers
03.28.11 | I've never heard #2 but you should check out...
Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Flight Of The Cosmic Hippo
A. A. Bondy - American Hearts
Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left

cirq

03.28.11 | thirtysixchambers, you should definitely give 2 a listen. its very cathartic. thanks for the recs.
cirq, what is house of balloons? |
cirq
03.28.11 | the weeknd's album |
ThirtySixChambers
03.28.11 | Will do! I'll let you know what I think. |
SeaAnemone
03.28.11 | It was sorta cheesy, but the experience of reading the part about when Truant is freaking out and he could feel some unknown entity in the dark breathing on his neck preparing to tear him limb from limb... the part where he spills all the ink on himself, right?... is a scarier moment than any movie I've seen has ever had. |
mynameischan
03.28.11 | bye-bye ashley and goodbye to the one you knew before i found him and had to let him go |
SeaAnemone
03.28.11 | Worse, I'm no longer alone.
Impossible.
Not impossible.
This time it's human.
Maybe not.
Extremely long fingers.
A sucking sound too. Sucking on teeth, teeth already torn from the gums.
I don't know how I know this.
But it's already too late, I've seen the eyes. The eyes. They have no whites. I haven't seen this. The way they glisten they glisten red. Then it begins reaching for me, slowly unfolding itself out of its corner, mad meat all of it, but I understand. These eyes are full of blood.
Except I'm only looking at shadows and shelves.
Of course, I'm alone.
And then from behind me, the door closes.
Legitimately couldn't sleep after reading this to myself in the dark for the first time haha. |
ThirtySixChambers
03.28.11 | The Truant side of the story was interesting but the Navidson Record was what really got me. |
mynameischan
03.28.11 | it is the most meta book ever |
SeaAnemone
03.28.11 | I think The Whalestoe Letters story part is incredibly interesting too, but yeah I'd be lying if I said the Navidson Record wasn't my favorite level in it |
ThirtySixChambers
03.28.11 | I think I got goosebumps every time that fucking endless hallway started to shift. |
FreePizzaDay
03.28.11 | It's a book about a book about a documentary about a film. |
ThirtySixChambers
03.28.11 | All of which was entirely made up |
FreePizzaDay
03.28.11 | The appendix that has all the letters Johnny's mom wrote him from the mental institute was probably my
favorite part of the book. |
ThirtySixChambers
03.28.11 | I really should re-read the book. I didn't retain much info in the beginning of the book because I was too preoccupied trying to figure out what the fuck was happening. |
KinkyFresh
03.28.11 | ^my problem |
balcaen
03.28.11 | i got a lot more comfortable discussing it after i read it a second time. i find it difficult to retain how much shit was happening in the beginning. also, take notes. |
ThirtySixChambers
03.28.11 | Did you guys read it in any particular order? I had the remastered colored edition so I didn't have to skip to further pages or anything. |
SeaAnemone
03.28.11 | yeah, definitely take notes. I read it once, was perplexed more than anything... went through a second time a few months later, very slowly, and took notes along the way. so so good. i've started reading a third time 2-3 times now, but never end up having the time. |
balcaen
03.28.11 | i have the same edition. for footnotes, i'd just finish the page or section i was reading and then go read that. reading the appendixes were a little tricky though. for the really fucked up sections where they were 3 different columns of writing i usually had an order for what i'd read on the page first. |
Yotimi
03.28.11 | on page 100 right now. Interesting so far |
ThirtySixChambers
03.28.11 | The beginning was the least stimulating part of the book for me. You're in for a treat |
SeaAnemone
03.28.11 | yeah... it gets good (well, better) around 150 if I remember correctly... I love the part leading up to the first appearance of the hallway, etc. |
ThirtySixChambers
03.28.11 | I get all tingly just thinking about the measurements. |
mothercountry
03.28.11 | Bought it. This should be interesting . . . |
ThirtySixChambers
03.28.11 | Have patience |
thebhoy
03.29.11 | I need to read this. It can't be anymore crazy than Beckett. |
thebhoy
03.29.11 | Also, Peter Ackroyd's Hawksmoor is an interesting novel, as a suggestion. It's not my favourite, but it's similarily inventive. |
Jebull
03.29.11 | Hmm this has my interest piqued, must read |
