balcaen 03.28.11	i've read it twice now. i lend my copy out to friends occasionally, which is probably a little odd for them because i leave all my personal notes in it. haunting book though, shit. i frequently forgot that none of it is actually real, but i've had a few dreams of my house collapsing into an oblivious hole or simply a door appearing in my living room. epic, but tedious book. if you're iffy with MZD's writing style i do NOT suggest reading his other books. it's become a trendy sort of thing lately. i heard this girl i know tell someone it was her favorite, but when i attempted to discuss it with her she said she never got through the book because it was "so slow and boring". eugh. too many mediocre bands have made reference to it.

FreePizzaDay 03.28.11	Strongly disliked the book. The formatting was just distracting and didn't add much to the story, and the story, while intriguing at times, was just too convoluted for me. I simply did not understand what was going on a lot of the time.
ThirtySixChambers 03.28.11	Yay a House of Leaves list. The book was simply fantastic. I can't tell you how many times throughout that story I was curled up in my bed with goosebumps. The way Danielewski described the shifting of house measurements and hallways is unlike any other narrative I've read. The turbulent feeling of anxiety in the book can be overwhelming at times but the more patience and time I put into the confusing story, the more enveloped I became.

SeaAnemone 03.28.11	It was sorta cheesy, but the experience of reading the part about when Truant is freaking out and he could feel some unknown entity in the dark breathing on his neck preparing to tear him limb from limb... the part where he spills all the ink on himself, right?... is a scarier moment than any movie I've seen has ever had.

SeaAnemone 03.28.11	Worse, I'm no longer alone. Impossible. Not impossible. This time it's human. Maybe not. Extremely long fingers. A sucking sound too. Sucking on teeth, teeth already torn from the gums. I don't know how I know this. But it's already too late, I've seen the eyes. The eyes. They have no whites. I haven't seen this. The way they glisten they glisten red. Then it begins reaching for me, slowly unfolding itself out of its corner, mad meat all of it, but I understand. These eyes are full of blood. Except I'm only looking at shadows and shelves. Of course, I'm alone. And then from behind me, the door closes. Legitimately couldn't sleep after reading this to myself in the dark for the first time haha.

ThirtySixChambers 03.28.11	Did you guys read it in any particular order? I had the remastered colored edition so I didn't have to skip to further pages or anything.
SeaAnemone 03.28.11	yeah, definitely take notes. I read it once, was perplexed more than anything... went through a second time a few months later, very slowly, and took notes along the way. so so good. i've started reading a third time 2-3 times now, but never end up having the time.
balcaen 03.28.11	i have the same edition. for footnotes, i'd just finish the page or section i was reading and then go read that. reading the appendixes were a little tricky though. for the really fucked up sections where they were 3 different columns of writing i usually had an order for what i'd read on the page first.
