10.05.10 | My dad likes bands like Minus the Bear, Maps & Atlases and Tera Melos, etc. The Mars Volta, but mostly Frances the Mute, a good deal of post-rock, a very select few "core" bands, namely Gospel and Envy, and Elliott Smith, who he likes more than I do now.
My little brother listens to a lot of stuff I do, but he leans toward indie and I lean towards screamo/post-hardcore etc. |

My little brother occasionally shows me new stuff, but it's usually just some indie band he really likes. |

my mom'll listen to anything and as far as i can tell anything other than clean vocals, she won't listen to

ShadowAmI
10.05.10 | ahhaah sniper.
I've gotten my sister into a few artists such as manchester orchestra.
i owe a lot of my tastes to my dad though, i grew up listening to a lot of nineties grungy stuff because of him so i have a certain affinity towards it. |
Hyperion1001
10.05.10 | My mother loves Nevermore's Dead Heart in a Dead World (she's 50 mind you). She made me put it on her Mp3 player just so she could have it. I thought that was pretty sweet.
And my father likes folk metal, to an extent. He hates growled or screamed vocals, but if it doesn't have that, he generally likes it.
And both my parents like to listen to my neofolk stuff sometimes, like Vali or Nest. |
igloodude
10.06.10 | I forgot to mention that my mom likes anything with what she calls "the chug-chug." She just loves the sound of distorted, down-tuned guitars. |

I got my brother to listen to Neutral Milk Hotel, Wilco, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Frightened Rabbit, Modest Mouse, etc. That's my only success story. |

AnotherBrick
10.06.10 | well i blame my dad for most of the class rock that i listen to, but mainly Pink Floyd, which at the time i fucking hated more than anything. we traveled a shit ton when i was little and we would drive everywhere on 20+ hour car rides and my parents would take turn putting on cds. my dad would throw on floyd, zeppelin, and queen all the time, and my mom would do typical chick stuff plus ABBA, which is why i have my gay obsession for abba.
in terms of my music now, my parents call everything i listen to drug music and wont give anything a chance. they both hold the attitude of "your generation doesnt have any bands that will be around 20 years from now" but they are basing that off of the radio music that we have today.
my sister is the one who really got me into music, since every morning i would wake up to her playing, shinedown, breaking benjamin, seether, linkin park, and three days grace (which is where i got my mainstream love from) and i've managed to turn her onto a few of my bands, for example The Mayan Factor, but she really wont give anything else of mine a shot. her boyfriend listens to country music which isnt surprising since he's a farmer, and he wont even get through a full song by anything that i play.
sure i know i am rambling but i find it pretty interesting as well.
and one of the fucking greatest moments recently was when...
my parents came up to where i go to school to take me and my girlfriend out for dinner and afterwords my dad drove my car to the shop for me since it needed to get fixed. a little bit later i got a text from my mom saying that my dad loved the cd that i had in the car and that they were listening to it on the way home now (my grandparents were in the car and she said they were enjoying it as well). turns out i left a copy of High Violet in the cd player and just the fact that my dad didnt turn my music off soon as he got in my car blew me away. yup i'm still rambling but oh well |

10.06.10 | Very cool list.
My dad is very closed minded when it comes to music.
All he listens to is basically Van Halen, Quiet Riot, Krokus...could be worse I suppose.
Mom listens to old progressive rock bands like Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant and she got me into My Bloody Valentine which is one of the most influential bands to me. I got her into some Opeth (Damnation, Watershed) Katatonia, and Godspeed You!Black Emperor. Wish my dad liked the same stuff but oh well. |
kangaroopoo
10.06.10 | I pass on mainly softer, not too heavy growly songs to my sister and to a lesser extent my mum that they'd never hear on their radio stations. e.g. Opeth, Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus, Oceansize, Riverside, Porcupine Tree, Thrice, Anathema, Alexisonfire, Imogen Heap, Deftones, Nickel Creek.
Owe my tastes initially to school/uni mates and now internet. |

10.06.10 | I've managed to do this a bit. My step-dad is a 60-something year old lover of old R&B, gospel, older hip-hop and blues. Especially the first and the last. So...I had him listen to John Mayer's 'Continuum'. He loved it. Good stuff.
Also, my sister seems to be getting more into rock-ish music she hears on TV and such; for example, she enjoys Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance. It's a start, at least...;-) |

10.06.10 | i don't understand that at all. my dad's a musician too, he LOVES his music from the day obviously as much as i love mine now but just is apathetic since the 90's started i guess |

my younger brother listens to the offspring, fuck yea 4th grade bitches
my other sister listens to radiohead and thats it lol
my parents listen to pop music from the 60s 70s and 80s
although my dad did turn me on to tomita and the pyramid speaker set up
he had to have been a pothead at some point. |

10.06.10 | I got my parents into Isis. That's about it, though. |

10.06.10 | My dad got me into music when I was really young (all the classic rock gold) and now the tables have turned and I show him new bands everytime I see him. I'll never forget the day he came home with a copy of The Moon & Antarctica by Modest Mouse, so stoked. I've got my 2 brothers into basically everything I listen to and I even managed to get my top 40 listening sister to love radiohead. |
Damrod
10.06.10 | My parents both love Gaslight Anthem, as it remindes them of Springsteen.
Can not really remember what else they listen to that I introduced them to, but my parents are both almost 60 years old and come to the show of my punk rock band on a regular basis. If that counts. ;-) |
couldwinarabbit
10.06.10 | I laughed at this list title. Not cause it is a bad idea it's just cause these are the bands my dad got me into:
Blues
R.E.M
classical music
jazz music
rolling stones
frank zappa
tom waits
...actually pretty much everything good up until 1992.
He however doesn't listen to any new music except arcade fire. I think he also likes radiohead but won't admit it. |
DiceMan
10.06.10 | Usually all my fam listens to is country but if I throw on some chill indie tunes it's "I like this this is nice" anything from Fun. to Trespassers William. My dad kinda likes The National only he thinks the lyrics are gibberish. He likes Sufjan Stevens too and Regina Spektor when she doesn't swear at him. My mom really really hates post-rock. And she thinks that a lot of vocalists I like are bad at singing because they don't always sing "well" by conventional standards. |

10.06.10 | the only bit of music i got from my parents was the beatles, which i guess is better than nothing.

10.06.10 | Dad got me into Zep and Floyd, I got my brother into power metal, heavy metal and hard rock, but other than that they all think I'm insane. Mum described GB!YE's Antennas to Heaven as "gosh-it sounds like toasters breaking down! You listen to such horrible music"
I gave up after that. |

my dad listens to strictly Elvis, my mom likes Van Halen and funny talk show radio hosts, my brother likes pretty much
shitty R&B and rap, and my sister likes whatever the disney channel is playing frequently and walkie talkie man. i don't
know how i would react to find out one day my dad was spinnning Cosmogramma on vinyl or humming an Oceansize
song. i definitely could use a little more disney music and walkie talkie man in my life though |

06.26.11 | my dad mostly just listens to classic rock. he really likes Pink Floyd. And he think Lady Gaga is funny or some shit. My mom listens to... Meatloaf, I think. I've shown my sister some of the 'gateway' metal bands, indirectly, and she seemed to like it, but it stopped there. Now she mostly just listens to radio shit. No one in my family actively listens to music from what I can tell. |
