Top 10 Albums
1Radiohead
Kid A

I remember hearing this for the first time, around a year and a half ago, and being absolutely clueless as to what to think of it. It took everything I knew about music at the time and turned it on it's head. I wasn't sure if I liked it, but I was sure of something. I had to listen to it again. And I did. Again. And again. And again. I have yet to find a piece of music more personal and deeply interwoven into my psyche as this is. This was the first piece of music that truly touched me, and for that, I am beyond grateful.
2Elliott Smith
Either/or

If Kid A gave me my first true appreciation of real music, then Either/or gave me the desire to create it. I was so obsessed with Elliott Smith's guitar playing, that I was inspired to pick up an acoustic guitar and learn the songs. Of course, it took much longer after starting to play them, but when I did, the feeling was beyond satisfactory.
3Nick Drake
Pink Moon

I remember the first time this album truly touched me. It was during a rather cliche night-time thunderstorm that I put this on and REALLY listened to it. I cried, like a little baby. It's such a cliche, generic story, but it's true.
4Neil Young
Harvest

To conclude my trio of quiet acoustic singer/songwriter albums, I can think of no album better than Harvest. I've only been listening to him for a few months, but his music has grown on me enough for me to truly consider him one of my all time favorite musicians, and this is by far my favorite work by him.
5Pink Floyd
Animals

The perfect progressive rock album. Lyrically a conceptual masterpiece, and musically a work of true genius, Animals is everything that encompasses the early progressive rock movement. I have spent hours analyzing the lyrics and following along to the dramatic musical-storytelling. The best thing about it is, that it isn't even that grandoise of a work. It's THE progressive rock album, and yet it isn't the most pretentious thing in the world.
6Jeff Buckley
Grace

In my opinion, THE defining 90's rock album. Jeff Buckley reached a pinnacle in contemporary songwriting that has yet to be matched. A nearly perfect synthesis of pop and rock with the pure, honest emotional depth of an artist who was far ahead of his time.
7The National
Boxer

The National are proof that 20-30 years from now, the current indie rock scene will be remembered and revered like how the '60's and '70's rock scenes are today. In all honesty, any of their last 3 albums would do a place on this list justice, but Boxer is an album that personally means more to me than most.
8Brand New
The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me

Feeling and emotion means a lot to me in music. I think the most important thing for an artist to have is an emotional connection to their own music. You should be able to "feel" them when you listen to it. The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me taught me that.
9The Smiths
The Queen is Dead

The swansong of my teenage youth. I owe a lot to this album. For all his flaws, Morrissey proves himself to be one of the most important figures in modern music. This album is why.
10Converge
Jane Doe

I will be honest. Heavy music generally doesn't appeal to me at all anymore. I find most examples of it repulsive; a stark contrast from the me 2 years ago. Something has to be said, however, for Jane Doe. It's an album I can only listen to on very rare occasions (anymore and it'd probably be too exhausting to be properly enjoyable) but when I do, it feels like my entire world is shaking. Few albums have such an emotional effect on me (and all of them are present on this list)
