illmitch
07.05.10 | yeah only definitive band you need in that list is dead kennedys tbh
i dont get why bad religion is so huge on this site and most 80s hardcore is relatively unknown |
Masochist
07.06.10 | Bad Religion is the reason So. Cal punk existed beyond the 80's, and they perfected the formula that so many of the 90's Pop-Punk bands followed beyond "Blitzkrieg Bop"'s three chords. That, and if there were no Bad Religion, there'd be no Epitaph Records (which has been the best punk rock music label hands-down for the past 20 years or so...ask any fan of Refused or Converge). They absolutely deserve a spot on a list of the best West-Coast punk bands, ESPECIALLY an objective one (I can't tell whether this list is objective or subjective, considering the title and the descriptions are a bit at odds).
By the way...yes, I'm a fanboy. And yes, they are my favorite band of ANY genre. But even that can't override what they've contributed (and continue to contribute) to the punk rock community. |

minutemen
with misfits, infest, tsol, dr. know, and others receiving honorable mention |
Masochist
07.06.10 | illmitch - I can't even state how many bands you missed. Epitaph isn't nearly as good right now as it was back then, of course, because punk rock itself isn't as good as a whole (look at Warped Tour). But you missed SO many artists that were at one time on that label:
The Descendants
ALL
The Circle Jerks
L7
Hot Water Music
The Bouncing Souls
The Vandals
Pulley
Not to mention being the label that a good amount of socially conscious rappers call home (Atmosphere, Sage Francis, etc.). Try Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epitaph_Records
And I still stand by my opinion that Bad Religion deserves a spot on this list. |

07.06.10 | Dude, Misfits are from New Jersey....

illmitch
07.06.10 | see the thing is, 80s hardcore is what i basically grew up on. so aside from the descendants (havent given the vandals or the circle jerks a solid listen), none of those artists will ever mean as much to me.
also i fucking hate most "socially conscious rap" and im pretty sure atmosphere is on rhymesayers |
Masochist
07.06.10 | Atmosphere were on Epitaph for 'Seven's Travels'.
And you never listened to L7? What about SNFU? They've been on Epitaph, as were Dag Nasty, Social Distortion and Guttermouth.
The only point I'm trying to make with this is that Epitaph is probably the most important punk label to have ever existed, and it wouldn't be around if Brett Gurewitz didn't need a label to put out Bad Religion's albums. Really, it's just another validation that Bad Religion is one of the most important and viable punk band from the 80's West-Coast scene. |
illmitch
07.06.10 | okay i was willing to let most important punk label of the past 20 years slide
but most important punk label to have ever EXISTED?
more important than alternative tentacles? crass records? subterranean? fucking SST? dischord?
i have nothing to say |
Masochist
07.06.10 | Yes, ever EXISTED. I said earlier that they were the BEST punk label for the past 20 years, but they are definitely the most important one ever. Have you seen their entire roster of bands and artists, past and present? Do you get that Epitaph is the reason punk went mainstream in the 90's? Or the fact that they are without question the most successful independent music label to ever exist for any genre? They brought punk to the masses, both in the mid 80's and the 90's, and continue to to be the label from which most of the offspring of punk rock thrive.
Whether or not you LIKE the bands on the label is irrelevant to what that label has done for hip-hop; namely, help turn it from a genre doomed to die in the 80's into the grandfather genre from which the largest amount of tendrils have root in rock music today.
...though, not gonna lie, I can definitely see the argument for SST. |
dopefiend67
07.06.10 | i cannot express how much i regret making this list.it brings out some of the stupidest fucking peoples oppinions. The offspring should replace the misfits?wtf? are you fucking cracked?the offspring are alright at absolute best.so why dont you take your spiked up hair and piss-mom and dad-off way of life elsewere you fucking pig.just to say that the offspring are true punk rock is blasphomy.they are radio friendly teen pop punk.i respect blink 182 muuuuuuuuuch more and that says alot.and early early early early bad religion is good.anything new is but a vehicle for attention.i do regret forgetting some important faces though:Flipper,DK,X,and The minutemen.my bad.and also just for the record i am somewhat of a refused fan but i dont really fancy converge.but regardless of my tastes for both, neither bands are really "punk". |

07.06.10 | What's a good place to start with the Misfits, pit? I got Static Age so far. |
illmitch
07.06.10 | all right, i misunderstood you at first. and i understand your reasoning behind the importance of Epitaph, but i still can't agree. i guess i just afford greater importance to the labels who disseminated the music in the first place and who put out the music i love so much. we both have our biases. |
TheBaneofSputnik
07.06.10 | Walk Among Us, Earth A.D., and Legacy of Brutality are some good ways to go, but ignore everything after Static Age. Although if you do have a chance, go see them live. I'm going to see them for the 8th time in December. Fucking stoked! |

TheBaneofSputnik
07.06.10 | No problemo |
Masochist
07.06.10 | Holy crap...obviously, instead of hip-hop, I meant punk rock. NO IDEA where hip-hop came from.
Bad Religion's work from 1981-1991 is pretty damn classic, of course, but I can't say that everything they've done has been for attention. Maybe the 90's...yeah, and 'The New America' in 2000, but from 'The Process of Belief' on, they've been one of the few relevant punk rock bands that keep the old-school vibe alive. And 'The Empire Strikes First' was definitely one of the few albums of 2005 (along with 'Mezmerize') where the political banter being thrown around wasn't cliche or cheesy (*cough*AmericanIdiot*cough*).
Also, I agree that Refused and Converge aren't really punk, though I make the argument that both of them have a punk aesthetic that's undeniable regardless of genre they actually are, much like At The Drive-In or Nirvana, though no one would ever call any of the aforementioned bands "punk."
Shit...I haven't been in a debate on Sputnik that was any more than useless personal attacks and flaming in a long time. That's probably why I keep responding.
And I like the Offspring more than Misfits, but I get that the latter probably has a lot more reason to be on this list than the former. |
TheBaneofSputnik
07.06.10 | masochist- except that the misfits AREN'T FROM CALIFORNIA |

07.06.10 | "And I like the Offspring more than Misfits, but I get that the latter probably has a lot more reason to be on this list than the former."
"wow what an idiot the misfits are from new jersey"
I know that wasn't aimed at me, but considering I said that after you posted it, I feel pretty fucking stupid considering the list title. |
TheBaneofSputnik
07.06.10 | It's all good. I actually agree with what you are saying. If this was a list of "Best Punk Bands," then yes, the Misfits belong on here, but West Coast Punk Bands? Misfits don't belong anywhere NEAR this list |
dopefiend67
07.06.10 | oh shit.i feel like a dumb ass.i dont know what i was thinking.i know it does no good to claim that i knew the misfits were from new jersey but i swear i did.i just got done reading "get in the van" the book henry rollins wrote using his journal entrys while on the road with THE FLAG.i suppose i just got used to him raving about playing with the misfits in cali.my bad you guys.and i agree.best work is definately static age, legacy of brutality, and although its not one of my favorites Earth A.D. its just to i dunno for me.also the 4 disk coffin collection is a good investment.im also a fan of the live albums "evilive" and "evilive 2". but im still tryin ta find out the motive behind the new misfits. although project 1950 was a somewhat useful creation and im also a fan of the songs "helena" (famous monsters) and the song "saturday night" which is actually my ringtone......lmao |

whatever tho, punk is a joke. converge for life."

07.06.10 | my appolgies masochist.seems you do know what your talking about.still cant see eye to eye bout the offspring thing though.lol nice to see a fellow descendents fan though!
but to u seaanemone.thats not true atall.im almost 18 and i proudly refer to myself as a punk.the reason its hard for some to do so is because the definition has changed so much over the years that people arent really sure what punk is anymore.but i am.im not the same punk i was when i was a boy.all i listened to was the sex pistols the clash and the ramones.lmfao.but i feel as though ive grown into a new punk.ive realized that although sid vicious and co. achieved success by the method of dumming down, that that is not neccessarilly the way.to me the more i know about punks history the smarter i am and the more i can be part of punks immenent future.so by all means.please.feel like a kid again.call yourself a punk.not even to mention that sheer aggression and destruction never really loses its shine.lol |
Masochist
07.06.10 | No problem ;-). And yeah, we probably won't agree, but I did make that comment about the Offspring earlier:
"...I like the Offspring more than Misfits, but I get that the latter probably has a lot more reason to be on this list than the former."
(Of course, that was before someone pointed out that Misfits don't belong on this list at all...). |

SeaAnemone
07.06.10 | you seriously define yourself by the type of music you listen to (and the ensuing ideologies of said genre)? that's pretty dumb. |
Masochist
07.06.10 | To be fair, some people define their lives by traumatic events; some define it by something as ridiculous as the social expectations of race or gender; some even define their lives by how everyone ELSE defines their lives. To define your life by the type of music you listen to, especially one as ideological as old-skool punk rock, isn't a crime whatsoever.
Right...now I feel like I'm becoming slightly douche-y. I'll (try to) stop. |
dopefiend67
07.06.10 | wow.alright SeaAnemone.so im dumb because i refer to myself concidering the type of music i love huh? so i guess your callin all kinds of people dumb then right?ian mckaye.henry rollins.keith morris.darby crash.not to mention pretty much everybody that was in "the decline of western civilization part 1".cause im pretty sure all those people refered to themselves as punkrockers or they probably wouldntt have been in a movie about punk rock and being punkrockers.right?you sloppy fucking cunt;P |
