"mostly stuff that most people haven't heard of"
yeah, pretty much.
I just recently discovered early 90's hip-hop. I had only ever heard the awful music put out on the mainstream today and was unaware that there was actually art in hip-hop. What i've been listening to is:
Nas - Illmatic
Wu-Tang Clan - 36 Chambers
All A Tribe Called Quest
First two Mobb Deep
Cypress Hill - Black Sunday
Common - Resurrection
That's really all. My taste in hip-hop is narrow, but it is there. I'd like to find more in the same vein of the ones i just listed though.
Yup, those albums are all tight.
P.O.S. - Audition
I could name more, but people will for me.
I actually don't listen to much hip-hop either (see that tiny sliver on my pie chart?) so recs would be nice.
Hyperion - You might like De La Soul (De La Soul Is Dead, 3 Feet and Rising) and Mos Def (Black on Both Sides, Black Star).
Yeah, i've never heard of De La Soul and who hasn't heard of Mos Def. I'll check their albums out. I've heard early Gangstarr is pretty good as well, but haven't heard any of his stuff.
I haven't heard much Gang Starr, but it's DJ Premier (!!!) and Guru (RIP), so there's a lot of talent in that group.
how about you try some mainstreamy hip hop
lil wayne - tha carter II
chamillionaire - ultimate victory
three 6 mafia - when the smoke clears
ugk - ridin' dirty
t.i. - king or paper trail
i get sick of people only listening to underground hip hop as if it's inevitably better
I do like some Lil' Wayne and T.I., just not as much.
That's because mainstream hip-hop blows. And plus, who cares what other people like? There was absolutely no reason for you to put forth that statement.
DJ Screw and the Screwed Up Click is where its at
'Ultimate Victory' and 'Paper Trail' are some of the better mainstream hip-hop albums lately. Some of Kanye's stuff is good, as well. Eminem rules on new millennium mainstream rap, though, no doubt.
I have to second the following:
Gang Starr - 'Hard To Earn'
Mos Def - 'Black On Both Sides'
Black Star - 'Black Star'
OutKast - 'ATLiens' (Except I'd rec 'Stankonia' first)
A Tribe Called Quest - Pick one. No, really.
Everything in Hyperion's list.
...and raise the following:
Eminem - 'The Slim Shady LP' (because it helps to get where he's coming from before jumping into 'Marshall Mathers LP'...plus, some of the jokes are carried forward)
Pharoahe Monch - 'Desire'
Raekwon - 'Only Built For Cuban Lynx, Pt. II'
Common - 'Be'
Kanye West - 'The College Dropout'
...yeah. That'll work.
i agree with qwe3. just because you're underground, it doesn't automatically mean you're good.
I only listen to a few rappers
"just because you're underground, it doesn't automatically mean you're good."
I don't think anyone's making that argument. Hip hop's just like any other genre, there are good artists in the mainstream, but most of them are shit. There are good artists in the underground, but most of them are shit. Same with metal, metalcore, punk, rock, pop, etc.
It's all personal preferences. Some people like more popular metal bands like KsE, Lamb of God, Metallica, Deftones, Dillinger etc and others are more for the underground stuff like Neurosis, Immolation, Rwake, Botch...
