12.08.09 | from here, I'd either go to Off Minor/Pg. 99 for the more traditional skramz sound or to Mesa Verde or City of Caterpillar for the more post-rocky sound. Also, "Jokes" by Kidcrash is a must-hear, regardless of where you go next.

everything tagged as screamo
skramz is a word from a forum board, don't remember where etc. etc. |
Jips
12.08.09 | Skramz was invented because the term screamo, was robbed by scenesters, who used it to start describing heavier popcore bands who incorporated screaming into their sound, underoath, etc... so now the term skramz is used in place of the word screamo, because it is often a misnomer...
i personally think its stupid and dont use it... |

12.08.09 | I think it's weird that you called Underoath "popcore" but thanks for the explanation, that makes sense. When I first heard the term years ago I was repulsed by it's stupidity. I can't believe I'm getting into the genre now.
Thanks for the recs, do we have a consensus on maybe two or three albums? I don't really wanna get like infinity new albums and not even listen to half of them like I usually do when I start downloading shit.
Thanks. |

12.08.09 | good idea, condensed form...
Saetia - A Retrospective
Mesa Verde - the Old Road
pg.99- Document 8
and
City of Caterpillar - s/t
are the essential basics in my opinion, I'm not an expert or anything, I've just been all out binging/reviewing the genre lately. |

12.08.09 | Well, I'm not quite sure what the difference is. I'm going for stuff like Daitro and City of Caterpillar (haven't heard those, been reading reviews) which I think is technically screamo. Not sure what the actual serperation between these genres is so maybe someone can shed some light on that.
Thanks for the condensed recs, I'll make those four a priority. And Calculate, I like that the I Not Dance album name is taken from a Queen song, I may get that one just for that.
Thank you, one and all. |
Jips
12.08.09 | I dont really consider underoath a popcore band either, but they are kinda the iconic band that the term screamo is applied too, and i couldnt really think of another term besides popcore that an skramz elitist would use...
i like to think of bands like underoath as like second wave of screamo(even though this isnt exactly true)...
its like the difference between "real" emo and what most people think is emo...
as for the difference between emo and screamo(ive posted something similar to this before)
Emo started as an offshoot of post-hardcore, and initially stood for emotional hardcore.
screamo was also kinda an offshoot of emo, but they incorporated influences from other heavier genres, like grind, powerviolence, thrash, etc...
so screamo is kinda a more agressive emo
neither one is a true 'genre,' they are more like closely associated subgenres, or possibly sub-sub-genres depending on your perspective...
hence the confusion... |
