07.30.09 | Very Sputnik, well done. Check out Relationship of Command by At the Drive-In and The Shape of Punk to Come by Refused |
Chewie
07.30.09 | switch 8 9 and 10 for Bath, F# A# (Infinity) and OK Computer and you'l have the ultimate sputnik list |
Titan50
07.30.09 | What about ( ) and Wish You Were Here |
Chewie
07.30.09 | those too |
illmitch
07.30.09 | no offense, but i hate uber-sputnik lists like this |
OllieS
07.30.09 | derekchewie's comment ftw. I'd also add El Cielo, Choirs Of The Eye and None So Vile. With 5, 6 and 7 you have the 3 ultimate Sputnik albums in a row. |
BallsToTheWall
07.30.09 | The sputnik special....do people ever discover music before coming on here? And/or enjoy other albums. |
accompliceofmydeath
07.30.09 | I only listened to Nickelback before joining. I didn't know other music existed. |
illmitch
07.30.09 | i had spent several years wasting my life on the internet prior to sputnik so i already became arrogant about my own music
the only sputnik bands ive become converted to are CTTS, Converge, and mewithoutYou |
Titan50
07.30.09 | When I joined I was already well into Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead :/ |
BallsToTheWall
07.30.09 | Nobody had an older brother/sister/cousin/parents to pillage through their cd collection? |
thebbqshrimp
07.30.09 | I can actually thank my parents IMMENSELY for my music knowledge. |
breesuschrist
07.30.09 | okay come the fuck on just because bands are popular (mwY, nmh) does NOT make them "sputnik bands". ctts and dredg can maybe be considered sputnik bands, and maybe maudlin. besides that, communities everywhere are equally in high praise for these albums |
thebbqshrimp
07.30.09 | Agreed. I don't get the "Sputnik bands" thing either. |
illmitch
07.30.09 | well, i actually got a lot from my mom
she got me into black sabbath and that got me into metal in like 8th grade
but mainly i get my punk post-punk and indie from her, she was really into punk in the 80's, lived in san francisco, knew jello biafra (of the dead kennedys) personally, and still has a shitload of AWESOME punk and hardcore vinyl |
thebbqshrimp
07.30.09 | That's so fucking sick, illmitch. I can thank my parents more for jazz/blues and the more classic rock kind of stuff and just pure love of music, in general. |
Titan50
07.30.09 | I want your mother illmitch, I can only really thank mine for U2 and Bowie |
BallsToTheWall
07.30.09 | The thing that grinds my gears is the utter predictability of music tastes on this site. Not everyone but many, share the same love for the tried and proven albums/styles/bands. A comparison can be made to being the cool kids and adopting their traits in high school. Key word being assimilation. |
atrink
07.30.09 | very very good list |
raggedragamuffin
07.30.09 | i can thank my mom for abba and eurythmics. |
Satellite

So you honestly believe that people are joining this site and claiming to like bands that they hadn't heard of previously (because Brand New and mwoY are so obscure) just to impress and be accepted by people behind computer screens who they'll never meet? No way. |
SeaAnemone
07.30.09 | Balls has a very valid point... but would you rather have unique taste for the sake of being different... or invest heavily in these Sputnik-approved albums; which doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them, they're just a bit trite; both are a little evil in some way |
BallsToTheWall
07.30.09 | I actually believe that completely. |
SeaAnemone
07.30.09 | I know, personally, it's impossible to try a band heavily rep-ed on Sputnik without some convoluted expectations; this can lead either way, either the album seems all the better because my personal opinions are well-affirmed in the more experienced opinions that I respect here on Sputnik; or, in case 2, where I am let down pretty heavily due to higher expectations. |
Ryanarchy
07.30.09 | I can't thank my parents for shit. My mom listens to Alan Jackson and George Strait while my dad buys Godsmack and Limp Bizkit albums. Good thing I discovered a new world of music through the internet and my peers. Great list by the way, although I don't think Powerslave is good enough to consider a favorite but Brand New and Glassjaw are definitely for the win! |
EverythingEvil2113
07.30.09 | good music is good music no matter how you here of it. whether you discover something on sputnik or somewhere else, if it's good it's good and that's all that should matter. great list btw. |
Electric City
07.30.09 | hello sputnikmusic.
the "assimilated tastes" thing is such crap, really. Albums are definitely jumped on here and spread like herpes, but who gives a shit? There's a reason usually that these albums are hyped here, reason being that they're good. the cool thing about sputnik is that we recognize good albums a lot of people don't. I mean pitchfork has their "pitchfork albums" too. It's just a community thing and who cares whether or not it harbors homogeneous tastes. |
BallsToTheWall
07.30.09 | It's certaintly one of sputnik's major flaws, one that I am perturbed by. As for seaanenome., you hit the nail on the head. Im a bit of both. Fuck generic people. |
Satellite
07.30.09 | I just think it's extremely retarded to see a list like this and assume that the individual "discovered" these bands on this site. BTBAM and Converge have huge fan bases that exist outside the tiny vacuum of Sputnik. I think what attracts people (e.g. me) to this site is the fact that those bands are reputable here. And from there, yeah, they're going to discover more bands, which I thought was sort of the point. |
GBJ
07.30.09 | Eh, you like what you like. I for one have been listening to 1, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 10 long before I joined sputnik. They're just good albums, and reasonable to be on a top 10 list.
I think what is "perturbing" is more lists that bring nothing new or original to the table. But a top10 list shouldn't necessarily be expected to do that. |
SeaAnemone
07.30.09 | but when an outsider dares to enter and insult a beloved album- chaos ensues, as proven by some epic list comments the past 2 days. |
PaperTigers
07.30.09 | The homogenous tastes thing isn't a problem, but I suspect people put lists together to look good more than to accurately reflect their favorite albums. When you are leaving off albums you like that aren't as popular here in favor of Sputnik approved albums, then you are narrowing the amount of music discussed here. I definitely think that happens. |
ziroth
07.30.09 | 2 is no doubt my favorite ever |
OllieS
07.30.09 | I agree heavily with Balls that the predictability is annoying. It is understandable however considering if an album is so heavily praised people will listen to it and really enjoy it ('cos looking objectively Opeth are better than most bands out there). I just try to listen to whatever sounds appealing to me...ie no matter how much an album will be praised if I'm confident I won't like that style (ie emo) I won't bother.
Awesome discussion btw. |
illmitch
07.30.09 | only problem is music isn't objectively good |
TricksterGRex
07.30.09 | i still don't get how everyone manages to have the exact same taste in music it's quite perplexing |
Electric City
07.30.09 | Not really. If one goes to sputnik looking for good music, one simply has to look at charts or follow the discussion threads for a couple days and it'll be obvious who the bands held in high regard are. |
ziroth
07.31.09 | Downer speaks the truth. |
JacobsLadder
07.31.09 | I think that after a while on Sputnik everyone starts listening to the same albums which are the best but having gotten into that they can get into more and different music. |
