| Favourite Bands
I'm bored and I feel like recording my current 10 favourite bands because I woudln't be surprised if that list is different in a week. Like anybody actually reads this anyway.
*I don't know why but I can't type anything for the desciprtion in number 10...oh well. What can I say...Rage rules. | 1 | Pink Floyd
The perfect band. Wish You Were Here, Dark Side of the Moon, Animals, Meddle, Ummagumma, The Wall, A Piper at the Gated of Dawn...are all incredible albums in their own right. Put together, they set the deeply philosophical backdrop for the phenomenon that is The Pink Floyd.
David Gilmour is an absolute genious on guitar. Heart-wrenching epic solos one minute, chunky funk chords the next. Richard Wright was a true trailblazer when it comes to keyboards in popular (or popular-ish) music. Great lyrics courtesy Roger Waters (not to mention Syd Barret, David Gilmour,..and ocassioanlly Wright too).
Pink Floyd are my favourite band and get my vote for Best Band Ever. There, I said it.
Best Album: Wish You Were Here (1975)
Best Song: Shine on You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V) [Wish You Were Here] | 2 | The Beatles
Of course, like any classic rock enthusiast, I adore The Beatles. And why not. I feel a connection to the music of The Beatles and I don't think I'm alone. It is meaningful music, but playful at times. Profound describes it nicely.
The music of The Beatles, much like the decade in which it was made, tell a story of political unease, of a fundamental change in thinking.
As with Pink Floyd, The Beatles' discography is staggering. One masterpiece after another as well as several very good albums. Abbey Road, Revolver, Sgt. Peppers' Lonely Hearts Club Band, and the infamous White Album all deserve mention in a discussion of "Best Albums of the 1960s" (1970s I guess for Abbey Road)no matter which crowd you roll with.
You cannot deny The Beatles. Unless you can, in which case that's ok. I just like making lists.
Best Album: Abbey Road (1970)
Best Song: A Day in the Life [Sgt. Peppers' Lonely Hearts Club Band] | 3 | Coldplay
Until recently, I had never really given Coldplay a try. I bought into the crap I heard about them being a "gay" band. Yes, their music is softer than some (Chris Martin called them the hardest band in soft rock), but therein lies the genius of Coldplay. Quite possibly, they are The Beatles of our era. Think about it: four great, unique albums in a row and they show no signs of slowing down.
The emotion and personal touch felt in the beautiful lyrics of Chris Martin as well as in Johny Buckland's soaring leads propel this band above other so-called "alt-rock" bands (I'll never understand that clarification). Not to mention the drumming of Will Champion. Not technically incredible at all times, but it fits the music perfectly.
Coldplay are a great band because they consistently produce great songs as well as great albums. All four full-length studio albums are great while I would go so far as to call A Rush of Blood to the Head and Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends classic.
Holy shit I can't wait to see them at Rock Werchter 2009. Look out Belgium.
Best Album: A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002)
Best Song: Death and all His Friends [Viva La Vida or Death and all His Friends] | 4 | Red Hot Chili Peppers
The perfect four-piece. Not enough can be said about the individual talents and relevance of John Frusciante, Michael "Flea" Balzary, Anthony Kiedis, and Chad Smith. I love them to death.
Yes, the lyrics are sometimes confusing or pointless even, but it's hard to care when the music is as good as the Red Hot Chili Peppers seem to make it. Diversity, depth of talent, great song-writing structure, and one hell of a live show help to propel this band to my top 5 list.
Best Album: Californication (1999)
Best Song: Californication [Californication] | 5 | King Crimson
The progressive entity know as King Crimson arguably laid much of the framework for what was to become metal and post-metal music. King Crimson produced some of the heaviest sounds and albums I've ever heard (Red) as well as some of the most peaceful, serene, and moving pieces out all time (Epitaph). Also, Robert Fripp and Bill Bruford and unbelievable.
Best Album: In the Court of the Crimson King (1969)
Best Song: 21st Century Schizoid Man [In the Court of the Crimson King] | 6 | The Jimi Hendrix Experience
As a guitar player, Jimi Hendrix almost needs to be on this list. What can I say about him that hasn't been said? A true genius both lyrically and musically, Jimi Hendrix plays some of the most timeless sounds in recent music. He was a virtuoso on the guitar and it didn't hurt that his "backup band" consisted of two of the best musicians on their respective intruments of the decade.
Best Album: Axis: Bold as Love (1967)
Best Song: Little Wing [Axis: Bold as Love] | 7 | Radiohead
Like Coldplay, I had never really given Radiohead a try until recently. Basically, all I knew about them was: Scott Tenorman loved them, OK Computer was consitently ranked in "Top Albums" lists everywhere, and that Ku, the 60 year old Cambodian I worked with in the dish pit of my cafeteria at first year of university highly-recommended The Bends to me almost every day. Since I first decided to go cover to cover on the big three Radiohead albums, I never looked back. Incredible is all I can say.
Best Album: OK Computer (1997)
Best Song: The National Anthem [Kid A] | 8 | Protest the Hero
Protest the Hero is simply the best of the vast genre known as "metal". In my opinion, Protest the Hero combine the best of all aspects of metal music. Insane drumming, unbelievable basslines, sweeping, tapping, shrashing and everything in betwenn on the guitars, a vast range of vocals indcluding some screaming and growling as well as provocative and meaningful lyrics form the basis of this great band.
Their two full-length studio releases, Kezia and Fortress, are good enough to place this band in my top 10.
Best Album: Fortress (2008)
Best Song: Blindfolds Aside [Kezia] | 9 | Rise Against
Some of my favourite lyrics are Rise Against lyrics. No music has more powerful lyrics. Listening to Rise Against, truly listening, cannot leave you unmoved. Like Protest the Hero, they're all vegans and I'm a huge supporter of the general message of that both bands bring to their music.
Best Album: Siren Song of the Counter Culture (2004)
Best Song: Rumours of My Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated [Siren Song of the Counter Culture] | 10 | Rage Against the Machine | |
Zoo
03.13.09 | I laughed throughout 8's entire description.
Solid otherwise though. | ninjuice
03.13.09 | don't listen to the PTH naysayer faggots around here.
All good bands, PTH, Beatles and Rise Against are my all time faves too. | TheGreatD17
03.13.09 | Chan likes PTH, he just doesn't think they're much of a shrash band. And I guess you haven't heard that Coldplay is going on hiatus... | upagainstthewall
03.13.09 | Great choice with rise against. There lyrics are always amazing | Mendigo
03.13.09 | 1&2 are pretty much the best ever with 5-7 following rather close behind. the rest is good as well, but not that special. | Knott-
03.13.09 | D17, I guess you haven't heard that they aren't. I mean, it's not like they're recording again, have just announced a new US leg of the VLV tour, and have stadium gigs organised for the summer. Right? | Bfhurricane
03.13.09 | I really need to get some Pink Floyd material. Awesome list man. | PayneTiger777
03.13.09 | ^ I couldn't agree more, but everyone hates me for thinking that lol. | Baphomet
03.13.09 | ^Nobody hates you Payne, we wuv you....
but I WILL kill you if you state that PTH is overrated. | natey
03.13.09 | I love PTH but I wouldn't say that they have "provacative and meaningful lyrics".
And props for Coldplay. They're a nice band. Pink Floyd bores me | PuddleSwimmer
03.13.09 | That's cuz no one appreciates anything in life anymore (referring to the 'PTH is overrated') and can't enjoy anything for more than a day | AliW1993
03.13.09 | Where's the description for RATM? They're my fav band on here. 3 are good too but nowhere near as good as you describe imo. | kygermo
03.13.09 | How could you call Coldplay The Beatles of our generation? Thats an absurdly bold statement. | Aids
03.13.09 | PTH have provacative and meaningful lyrics if you take the time to understand where they're coming from. None of the "I am you is he are we" sort of stuff but thoughtful and relevant lyrics nonetheless. Check out "A Plateful of Our Dead" if you need convincing.
And as you can clearly see, I'm not a metalhead so maybe the reason I like PTH so much is because they aren't metal in the traditional sense. Overrated? Really? Maybe I'm just excited because I'm going to see them in a couple weeks but I beg to differ.
And to kygermo, I say that Coldplay are (possibly) The Beatles of our generation based on similiarities of fanbases and also on the fact that twenty years from now, Coldplay songs will likely still be played and listened to...at least more so than most other bands of our time. Also, I happen to think that like The Beatles, Coldplay are just an incredible band with a quickly growing collection of excellent albums and songs. The only thing they lack, in my opinion, is a little diversity...but Viva La Vida was promising in that respect.
Anyway thanks for not flaming the shit out of me, I wasn't sure how this sort of thing works on this site but I thought I'd give it a chance. Maybe if I'm careful I'll write a review later.... | Baphomet
03.13.09 | Oh I forgot.. welcome to the site! I guess you'll fit in just fine, but let me give you a couple of pointers so that you'll adapt faster:
- Pretend Opeth is the best band EVER
- Hate Limp Bizkit by all means
- Never post more than 1 list a day
- Have a good knowledge about Pokemon
- State how hilarious chan is every once in a while
- and please, by all means, never make a list wider than it should be... | Chewie
03.13.09 | woot for The National Anthem being your favorite Radiohead song | Aids
03.14.09 | -Never listened to Opeth...I guess I'd better
-This will be easy because Limp Bizkit blows chunks
-Fine. I do have a life...sort of.
-Don't worry, I'm all about the Pokemon.
-And I kind of assumed that this site, like other "forums', would have one mega-vetran whose balls everyone sucks. I guess chan is that guy for this site.
-What do you mean wider? In scope? | parksungjoon
05.12.22 | epic | Storm In A Teacup
05.12.22 | Lol Tobias lol | parksungjoon
05.12.22 | And I kind of assumed that this site, like other "forums', would have one mega-vetran whose balls everyone sucks. I guess chan is that guy for this site. | Storm In A Teacup
05.12.22 | Fuck that. Chan ain’t shit. | Shemson
05.12.22 | “Like anybody reads this anyway”
