Songs That Affected Me
Songs that had an impact on me, though not necessarily my fave from the artist |
1 | Alexisonfire This Could be Anywhere In The World
What got me was the sheer power and urgency of the song, as well as how excellently (?) they managed to switch between George's harsh screams and Dallas' beautiful and haunting melodic singing. |
2 | At the Drive-In One Armed Scissor
It's fair to say everyone who's heard this came away gobsmacked. There is true emotion behind Omar's voice, and the background screams in the third verse (I think it is) are really quite good. |
3 | Biffy Clyro Living Is A Problem Because Everything Dies
At this point, I had only heard Folding Stars, which made me think Biffy was just another wuss rock band (ironically I now love that song...). Yet, when I heard this, my opinion changed completely. There was a certain rawness to Simon's voice, as well as the awesome guitar riffs at the end of each verse. The choir in the background also makes it seem that much more dramatic. |
4 | Brand New Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades
The verses just seemed so much more different to anything I had ever heard at that point. The seemingly poor production in the chorus also made it seem more raw and desperate, and Jesse's screams of "Die young to save yourself" are incredibly powerful. |
5 | The Cure Lullaby
At this point, I was already a Cure fan, but nothing had persuaded me to REALLY like them. Then I heard this, and it just seemed so...odd and dreamy. The guitar (I think it is) stabs contrasted perfectly with the calmness (and strange hesitantness) of everything else as well. |
6 | Eminem Sing for the Moment
Maybe it's because it samples Aerosmith's Dream On (one of only two good 'smith songs, and one of my fave songs of all time. fucking irony), or maybe it's the lyrics, or maybe the awesome drumbeats. Hell, all I know is, this song made me respect Eminem a hell of a lot. |
7 | Flobots Handlebars
The lyrics are the main thing, but another thing is how they managed to use instruments not normally associated with rap rock. The last minute or so is truly urgent and powerful. |
8 | Gallows Abandon Ship
I had no idea what Frank Carter was yelling about when i first heard this, but he certainly seemd worked up about it. |
9 | Innerpartysystem Don't Stop
Part of my love of this song comes from the (first) video of it, which is 100% definitely the best video of the 21st Century. The opening of the song prepares you for something, with the brooding synths and the loud drum beats. The lyrics are truly fantastic, and Patrick's vocals are soaring and true. |
10 | Jimmy Eat World Salt Sweat Sugar
This just seemed so different from The Middle and Always Be (the two JEW (lol) songs I had heard at this point). It had a great riff and it just seemed so raw, and reeked of sweat and testosterone. In a good way. |
11 | Lostprophets Rooftops (A Liberation Broadcast)
My fave LP song is TFSOP, but this was my first LP song, and it just seemed so brilliant. Maybe it was its pure anthemit qualities, I don't know. Hell, even my mum loves it. |
12 | Manic Street Preachers Faster
After hearing some other of the Manics work, I was not expecting this. It's the jarring and dissonant guitar at the beginning that makes it seem edgy and dangerous, as well as the gang shouts at the end of "so damn easy to cave in" |
13 | Muse New Born
I was already a well established Muse fan at this point, but I didn't know they could do stuff this heavy (ish). The way it trescends from spacey piano to a rough and distorted guitar riff before the rest of the band comes crashing in is brilliant. |
14 | Nine Inch Nails Hurt
I love this song, yet I hate listening to it, purely because it is just SO DAMN DEPRESSING. Hearing this cemented my belief that The Downward Spiral is the greatest album ever created. It actually sounds as if Trent is writing his own suicide note, and the guitar riff at the end shocks you and makes your bowels drop to the floor. |
15 | Nirvana Heart Shaped Box
It's nigh on impossible to explain my love for this song. I still have no idea what the lyrics are about (Courtney's vagina?!) but Kurt's voice doesn't make them sound so pretty. |
16 | Orgy Blue Monday
I had no idea that this was a cover at first...
My main love for this song comes from the awesome drum beats at the beginning, and Jay's voice in the chorus seem emotional and true |
17 | Pearl Jam Jeremy
Truly beautiful and haunting. That's all I can say. The video and the story behind it is truly tragic. |
18 | Placebo Pure Morning
The repetitive guitar riffs and cold drums makes this seem so hyptonic, and Brian's lazy vocals add to an airy and almost depressing feel |
19 | Radiohead Paranoid Android
I had no idea you could do that with a guitar... |
20 | Rage Against The Machine Killing In The Name
Angry white boi music that is actually angry for a good reason. And who can forget the almighty "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" |
21 | Refused New Noise
"Can I scream?!" Yes, Dennis, you most certainly can scream. The second chorus is truly fantastic and catchy as hell. This woke me up to louder, more experimental music. |
22 | Rise Against Prayer for the Refugee
The lyrics are brilliant and the song is amazingly powerful, with Tim's voice emotional and raw |
23 | Serj Tankian Empty Walls
While the song is good, it's the video that I truly love, and makes me realise Serj as a creative genius. |
24 | Smashing Pumpkins Disarm
To those of you who hate Billy's voice, listen to this. You can't get much more emotional than this. Beautiful and wonderfully depressing. The annoying thing is, apparently it's anti-abortion, while I myself am pro... |
25 | System of a Down Chop Suey!
The verse is weird and wonderful as hell, and the ending chorus is truly beautiful and emotional. I came away gobsmacked |
26 | Taking Back Sunday Makedamnsure
See number 11 |
27 | Tool Schism
I have still yet to buy this album WHICH IS REALLY PISSING ME OFF! Weird and wonderful |
28 | Weezer Hash Pipe
This song seemed so damn heavy compared to Buddy Holly (whose video annoyes me for unexplained reasons). |
29 | 30 Seconds to Mars The Kill
I just love this song. I think one of the reasons is this song gives Jared's voice time to shine. Emotional, and I love the scream of "This is who I really am" |
