Metal, for the most part, has fallen off my musical radar. But Cynic doesn't count. Still on constant rotation, Cynic, and everything the band members have touched have generally turned to gold, and in celebration of Traced In Air, heres some of the best Cynic related porjects. (Aeon Spoke doesn't really count, but I'll put them in anyway.)
My favorite Death album. Reinert + Masvidal + Chuck = brutal goodness.
Traced In Air
The hype is worth it.
This and the Portal demo are probably where you'll see the influences of softer side of Traced In Air, and Gordian Knot are just mind blowing. John Myung probably won't ever record anything this good again.
Another one of my favorite albums ever, Aghora's self titled is just sublime. Some people think Danishta Rivero's voice is a little lifeless, but theres something just unbelievably captivating about it.
The album that started it all, a pioneering effort by some of the best musical minds ever, brutal but still so very... focused? Sorry, had to do it.
Not as good as Self-titled, but still kicks generous amount of a'ss.
This little known demo was recorded sometime after Focus, and while it's a very different beast, it's softness, female vocals and all, it's still an enchanting listen. (And for those wondering, I deliberately haven't put the pre-Focus Demo on this list).
Masvidal and Reinert gone soft-pop?
Well, I have 2 Cynic albums to get.
The Portal demo has its good moments but some parts just put me to sleep. I agree with the rest of this list though. Why didn't you put the pre-Focus demo on the list?
Both Sean's weren't on human. DiGiorgio played bass.
1,2,5 are great. ive heard some of 3,6,8 have some good songs. i need 4 since i really liked their album Formless
I liked Gordian Knot for a while and they sound great on paper, but jesus are they boring as hell. No passion at all in their delivery. It's way too calculated.
#1 fights with Individual Thought Patterns as my favorite Death album, though.
Thor: Ops, It was Malone and Masvidal, I got it mixed up.
Jrowa: s/t completely destroys Formless, get it!
Kage: I guess its one of those 'gotta be in the mood' albums.
Willie: Oh 'cause it's only got a few songs and most of them are dodgy versions of what would end up on Focus Anyway.
*Thor: Agh. Reinert and Masvidal.
