The Mars Volta Ranked

Probably my new all time favorite band. Plan to check out At the Drive In and other prog rock bands for more.
6The Mars Volta
Octahedron

Great Songs on this one that boost it up to my 3.5 ranking. The more acoustic tracks are the highlights for me. But its straight-forward approach keeps it from ascending any higher.

Top 3
1. Since We've Been Wrong
2. With Twilight As My Guide
3. Copernicus
5The Mars Volta
The Bedlam in Goliath

This album is wonderful entertainment. It also proved that the band could shorten their song lengths instead of lengthen them. Sadly this one lands here by process of elimination.

Top 3
1. Conjugal Burns
2. Ilyena
3. Cavalettas
4The Mars Volta
Amputechture

I prefer Ampu over Bedlam for its atmosphere. It, as the album art would suggest, emits a very warm feeling. And its opening is amazing.

Top 3
1. Meccamputechture
2. Day of the Baphomets
3. Vicarious Atonement
3The Mars Volta
Noctourniquet

This one grew on me fast. Its almost shoegazey nature was a wonderful treat. The fact that it tried to dial it back more than Octahedron provided a different side to the band.

Top 3
1. In Absentia
2. Imago
3. Aegis
2The Mars Volta
De-Loused in the Comatorium

Hearing this for the first time was simply amazing. Track after track after track, it seemed like there was barely a dull moment. From the explosive Inertiatic ESP to the more adventurous tunes like Cicatriz ESP and Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt to more emotionally driven tracks like Eriatarka and Televators, this album is THE best entry point for The Mars Volta.

Top 3
1. Inertiatic ESP
2. Drunkship of Lanterns
3. Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)
1The Mars Volta
Frances the Mute

Objectively, I believe Frances and De-Loused are equal. Personally, I definitely prefer Frances. It just seems like everything done on the previous record was increased ten-fold. Its Western-esque atmosphere at times and the story that drives the album only adds to the insanity of it. Also let's not forget Cassandra Gemini. That song, in my opinion, is the ultimate high of this band.

Top 3
1. Cassandra Gemini
2. Cyngus... Vismund Cygnus
3. L'Via L'Viaquez
