Marilyn Manson Ranked

After the release of Heaven Upside Down, i thought i'd give my opinion on his discography and where i'd rank that album. Out of 10 ratings are based on how each release works as an album, while my ranking is based on how much i enjoyed the album.
11Marilyn Manson
Born Villain

I hate Golden Age of Grotesque, but i can at least stand it.
80% of this album sounds like the song WOW off of High End of Low. Everything is so awkward and poorly produced and the very very few standout tracks lack the vocal punch of any other album, it devolves into mindless wailing, and it just sounds gross. This is the polar opposite of Antichrist Superstar in terms of quality, and i h a t e it.
Heaven Upside Down is what this should have been.

The Golden Age of Grotesque

I hate this album. Holy Wood was the downfall, and this was almost the bottom. I can't explain it, maybe it's the lyrics being so purposefully nonsensical, or maybe the sound in general, i don't know but i hate this. It doesn't have any emotional impact and in my opinion is overrated to an absurd extent.
4/10
9The Spooky Kids
Lunchboxes & Choklit Cows

This collection of demos may not be in the main Manson discog, but god these songs are cool. Pretty much 100% grunge. In a lot of cases sounding more like pearl jam than alice in chains.

So this doesn't even sound like Portrait for the most part.

A lot of songs are very repetitive for the sake of following a standard song structure, and it's more of a novelty album than anything else. Interesting enough though.
6.5/10
8Marilyn Manson
The High End of Low

To me, this album isn't bad. It has a lot of great songs. However it has a lot of really really bad tracks.

WOW in particular (pretty much 80% of the last half actually) is terrible. Absolutely terrible. WOW is easily one of my least favorite songs of all time, White Spider is very awkward and really cheesy, and I Wanna Kill You Like They Do In The Movies is unnecessarily long and is a genuine chore to sit through. But the last 3 tracks make up for it (kind of)
5/10
7Marilyn Manson
Holy Wood

The album i've always had a disinterest in. It's basically taking what made Mechanical Animals so commercially accessible, and put it into the Antichrist Superstar sound. It's a lot more punk rock and clean sounding. The vocals on this album never worked for me, though the high pitched shrieking/yelling is certainly impressive.
9/10
6Marilyn Manson
Portrait Of An American Family

Their most underrated i think. My favorite vocal performance of Manson's. At times this album sounds more like a goth Alice In Chains than Marilyn Manson. The vocals are very grunge sounding (this also transferred over to Antichrist Superstar but sadly stopped on Mechanical Animals, and his style has been different ever since)
The song Cyclops actually sounds a LOT like Sickman by Alice In Chains.
Lyrically it's very fun and tongue in cheek. Bonus points for the Arthur Brown sample on Lunchbox.
7/10
5Marilyn Manson
Eat Me, Drink Me

The album everyone hates. But i love it. Mostly for nostalgia but i love the atmosphere and vibes. It feels very halloween-y to me. Every october i find myself spinning this album frequently. (7/10)
4Marilyn Manson
Mechanical Animals

The album i got into very late. Essentially Manson is doing Bowie, and it works on every level. Following up ACSS with this was the most baffling decision ever, but it works.
9/10
3Marilyn Manson
Heaven Upside Down

My favorite Manson album since 1996. Mostly because of the vocal performance and over all sound and aesthetic. A lot of times songs fall on their faces lyrically, but it never takes me out of the experience. This album is incredibly catchy and collects every album in one streamlined combination, sounding like antichrist superstar through a modern pop filter.
8/10
2Marilyn Manson
The Pale Emperor

A masterpiece that stands up to the band's early work without a fight. It may not sound much like a Manson album, but it's bluesy and passionate.
9/10
1Marilyn Manson
Antichrist Superstar

My favorite album of all time. In my opinion the most sonically and thematically perfect album ever made. I will never not love this.
Manson actually sounds intimidating on this album. A commercially successful album that sounds this staggeringly vile is shocking to me. 10/10
