| Marilyn Manson Ranked
After the release of Heaven Upside Down, i thought i'd give my opinion on his discography and where i'd rank that album.
Out of 10 ratings are based on how each release works as an album, while my ranking is based on how much i enjoyed the album. | 11 | | Marilyn Manson Born Villain
I hate Golden Age of Grotesque, but i can at least stand it.
80% of this album sounds like the song WOW off of High End of Low. Everything is so awkward and poorly produced and the very very few standout tracks lack the vocal punch of any other album, it devolves into mindless wailing, and it just sounds gross. This is the polar opposite of Antichrist Superstar in terms of quality, and i h a t e it.
Heaven Upside Down is what this should have been.
3/10 | 10 | | Marilyn Manson The Golden Age of Grotesque
I hate this album. Holy Wood was the downfall, and this was almost the bottom. I can't explain it, maybe it's the lyrics being so purposefully nonsensical, or maybe the sound in general, i don't know but i hate this. It doesn't have any emotional impact and in my opinion is overrated to an absurd extent.
4/10 | 9 | | The Spooky Kids Lunchboxes & Choklit Cows
This collection of demos may not be in the main Manson discog, but god these songs are cool. Pretty much 100% grunge. In a lot of cases sounding more like pearl jam than alice in chains.
So this doesn't even sound like Portrait for the most part.
A lot of songs are very repetitive for the sake of following a standard song structure, and it's more of a novelty album than anything else. Interesting enough though.
6.5/10 | 8 | | Marilyn Manson The High End of Low
To me, this album isn't bad. It has a lot of great songs. However it has a lot of really really bad tracks.
WOW in particular (pretty much 80% of the last half actually) is terrible. Absolutely terrible. WOW is easily one of my least favorite songs of all time, White Spider is very awkward and really cheesy, and I Wanna Kill You Like They Do In The Movies is unnecessarily long and is a genuine chore to sit through. But the last 3 tracks make up for it (kind of)
5/10 | 7 | | Marilyn Manson Holy Wood
The album i've always had a disinterest in. It's basically taking what made Mechanical Animals so commercially accessible, and put it into the Antichrist Superstar sound. It's a lot more punk rock and clean sounding. The vocals on this album never worked for me, though the high pitched shrieking/yelling is certainly impressive.
9/10 | 6 | | Marilyn Manson Portrait Of An American Family
Their most underrated i think. My favorite vocal performance of Manson's. At times this album sounds more like a goth Alice In Chains than Marilyn Manson. The vocals are very grunge sounding (this also transferred over to Antichrist Superstar but sadly stopped on Mechanical Animals, and his style has been different ever since)
The song Cyclops actually sounds a LOT like Sickman by Alice In Chains.
Lyrically it's very fun and tongue in cheek. Bonus points for the Arthur Brown sample on Lunchbox.
7/10 | 5 | | Marilyn Manson Eat Me, Drink Me
The album everyone hates. But i love it. Mostly for nostalgia but i love the atmosphere and vibes. It feels very halloween-y to me. Every october i find myself spinning this album frequently. (7/10) | 4 | | Marilyn Manson Mechanical Animals
The album i got into very late. Essentially Manson is doing Bowie, and it works on every level. Following up ACSS with this was the most baffling decision ever, but it works.
9/10 | 3 | | Marilyn Manson Heaven Upside Down
My favorite Manson album since 1996. Mostly because of the vocal performance and over all sound and aesthetic. A lot of times songs fall on their faces lyrically, but it never takes me out of the experience. This album is incredibly catchy and collects every album in one streamlined combination, sounding like antichrist superstar through a modern pop filter.
8/10 | 2 | | Marilyn Manson The Pale Emperor
A masterpiece that stands up to the band's early work without a fight. It may not sound much like a Manson album, but it's bluesy and passionate.
9/10 | 1 | | Marilyn Manson Antichrist Superstar
My favorite album of all time. In my opinion the most sonically and thematically perfect album ever made. I will never not love this.
Manson actually sounds intimidating on this album. A commercially successful album that sounds this staggeringly vile is shocking to me. 10/10 | |

10.10.17 | I see a lot of mixed and negative views on Heaven Upside Down, and i've listened to it a dozen + times and am still quite infatuated with it. Maybe it's just because i'm a fanboy and this is his most old school album since Holy Wood. Thoughts? | onionbubs
10.10.17 | I have only heard three of his albums, but I'm 100% sure you're wrong about 7 not being 1 | Brabiz
10.10.17 | Lyrically it's great, but it's really really watered down. There are a lot of aspects to it that i can admire, but don't personally appeal to me. | Brabiz
10.10.17 | Like i do think it's a 9/10 album. But i ranked it below a 7 because i just happen to enjoy it more | cold
10.10.17 | HOW THE SHIT ARE THE TOP 3 NOT THE TRIPTYCH | cold
10.10.17 | double post | DarkSideOfLucca
10.10.17 | Hey wait I have a list too. Respect for 1 being your favorite all time album, it's not mine but it's definitely up there for me. 2 fucking rules, but actually 7 would be my 2 - I'm surprised to see that so low. 10 is also super low.
New album is OK, I really dug it on the first listen but it doesn't have as much lasting appeal as Pale Emperor (I also think PE is far more mature and enjoyable in general). | cold
10.10.17 | Best to worst
Antichrist Superstar>Mechanical Animals>Holywood>Portrait Of An American Family>Smells Like Children>Last Tour On Earth>The Pale Emperor>Heaven Upside Down>Remix & Repent>The Golden Age Of Grotesque>The Spooky Kids>Eat Me, Drink Me>Born Villian>The High End Of Low | KevinKC
10.10.17 | I think Marilyn Manson's discography is pretty impressive both in terms of quality as in term of evolution, even if the band's name hides the fact that his partners are as much responsible for the album's quality as he is himself.
I'd be happy to have a Portrait II, Antichrist II, Mechanical II, Holy Wood II, Golden Age II, Eat me II, Pale Emperor II and I don't think any of these actually exists. Antichrist's vibe was never remade, nor was Mechanical's poppy epicness.
His self-depracating or self-celebrating lyrics and general attitude (and poor taste in women) has made Manson a bit of a parody of himself which is sad because he accomplished marvels as a musician, should be proud of it and keep up the good work.

10.10.17 | I wonder why he doesn't do the new trend of anniversary tours. I would kill to see Antichrist in it's entirety. Though, maybe we would need to get the old lineup back together? HAHAHAHAHA THAT'LL NEVER HAPPEN | DarkSideOfLucca
10.10.17 | What Kevin said
And if I saw Antichrist live straight through I would lose my shit | DoofusWainwright
10.10.17 | 1 is a 3.5
1 is 1
That is all. | Veldin
10.11.17 | I honestly enjoy all his albums (though I find Golden Age disappointing based off what it COULD have been imo). 1 is 1 because it works so well musically and nihilism ftw. His new album is more enjoyable to me than Pale Emperor, but everybody seems to disagree. Also, new music video for Say10 with Depp is great. | Veldin
10.11.17 | It's also really unfortunate he gets lumped into comparisons with his contemporary artists (Rob Zombie and such), because I really think the band's music is still enjoyable and (usually) relevant to this day. | artiswar
10.11.17 | Nobody ever lumped him in with Rob Zombie. Wtf | Veldin
10.11.17 | I've seen a lot of comparisons to White Zombie, at least. And while I do like Astro Creep, it often seems like an unfair comparison | Veldin
10.11.17 | or perhaps I've just hung out with dumb people/read dumb articles? | artiswar
10.11.17 | I think that might be it. But what do I know, I also think this ranking is whack as fuck. | Brabiz
10.11.17 | "And if I saw Antichrist live straight through I would lose my shit"
Yeah me too, the guy can barely stand straight or remember the words to the beautiful people.
Poor barrel chested man.
Love him to death, but i dunno if i'd pay to see him right now... even though he is getting better. Accidents aside. | DarkSideOfLucca
10.11.17 | Yeah, I had the option of paying to see him a bit ago and I chose not to...very sad day considering how much I love his music | cold
10.11.17 | I actually saw him on the Grotesque tour, and it wasn't all that great. He was out of shape and could barely sing a whole song. Then during "Sweet Dreams" he slammed his mic stand down and it hit his security guard and knocked him out. I went with those types of people who like to get to shows hours early, and it was cold and rainy. Best part was that we were so early, they were in the process of load in, and (I swear on my lil peener) I got to sleep against the podium used during "Antichrist Superstar". |
