Neek's Fat 500 Ranks
A deconstruction of all of Sputnik's shit rating system and why it makes everything so much harder than it should.
|1||Queens of the Stone Age|
The term "classic" is so confusing. Sure, "Sgt. Pepper" is a classic, but is it a 5/5 album? A 5/5 album has to be a personal feeling, not an objective definition. These albums are perfect in my mind, some seamless blend of emotion and musicality that might not be appreciated by others, but just hits that perfect spot for me.
Hurry Up, We're Dreaming
Something absolutely deserving of acclaim, some astounding feat of songwriting, lyricism, musicianship, melody, or probably everything combined. These are more than just "great," yet are flawed in some small way that nevertheless keeps them from becoming truly perfect. However, there's always room for growth, and who's to say these won't hit the mark someday?
The Division Bell
What's the difference between "excellent" and "superb"? They're literal synonyms. The first definition of superb on google is "1. excellent." Sputnik is insane, but I can tell you that something of a 4/5 deserve nothing more or less than to be considered a great album. These albums have incredible strengths and while still retaining obvious weaknesses, they are far more memorable and captivating than their 3.5 brothers. Finding the different between these two ratings is probably the hardest to do.
Why tf is 3.5 considered "great" in Sputnik terms? Since when was a 7/10 great? What's the difference between great and excellent? You guys have the most confusing and fucked up rating system ever. It's the main reason why it took me so long to make an account tbh. These albums have strengths that far outweigh their faults, but they're messy and/or even enough where I'm not compelled to go out and purchase them, or even jam them very often. These are my "yeah I enjoyed these while they lasted" albums.
1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours
There's got to be something in between "good" and "average" guys. These albums to me feature something truly enjoyable or redeemable to them, but I'm just not able to get into them. They may feature strong songwriting or creativity that helps them to stand above from the rest of the pack, but not enough for me too "like" them per se.
This album was either consistently moderate, or all the great things and tracks on it were hampered down by terrible counterpoints that completely robbed them of their merit. These albums might feature a song or two that's worthwhile, but should otherwise be avoided as a whole.
Yup, these are just plain unlikable albums. There's certainly some redeeming factors, such as a talented band member, some solid songs, or competent lyrics, but overall it's just a mess that isn't even worth trying out in the first place.
My World 2.0
"Very Poor"? Come on guys, at least you a synonym or something here. These albums should never have been made, purely unentertaining or just plain boring as shit, yet there remains one or two kernels of value that stop me from completely smiting it with the deadly 1/5.
Irredeemably bad. There's nothing that makes this even a little bit enjoyable or listenable. Nothing can save this album, and nothing could excuse me from listening to it ever again. These make me regret my "3-listen rule" so much that I only listen twice (I know I'm insane.)
My 500th rating.
The Endless River
My 400th rating.
Angelic 2 The Core
My 300th rating.
|13||The Smashing Pumpkins|

My 100th rating.
Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends
Thanks to my lovely boys: Drifter, Blushful, Asleep, Deadly, Con, and Ars.
And special thanks to my new arch nemesis Butcher. May he rot in hell.
And yes I listened to the entirety of 9
awwwww, neeka.. did you see what i wrote about m83? we can be friends again!
I did, it made me so happy!
i bet 9 slaps
Slaps your mom amirite?
There's a difference between "great" and GREAT. I interpret "3.5 - great" to mean the former not the latter. There you go.
Nice idea Neeka, a lot of my ratings are based off of "Well, is this really "excellent" or is it merely "great"?" more than they should be. The actual word plays more into it than the number sometimes
And yeah check out "We Own The Sky" if you haven't heard that M83 song yet
Neg for 5
But pos for 15 ♥
Yeah I get you Dctarga, and I have, it's great!
@Drifter < 3
What's your favorite M83 album?
I haven't really done a deep dive on them yet, only heard that one song because it came on my friends Pandora one time. So I would have to say Hurry Up, just cause that's the only one I've heard most of.
And for real I know it's the single, but that trumpet or w/e at the end of Midnight City is just....goddamn gives me an eargasm idk
Deeeee-doo, Deeeee-doo, Deeeeee-doo. *Tears*
Midnight City is fuckin' rad man, I don't know why people always feel guilty for liking that one haha, you should check out the music video trilogy they did for that, Wait, and Reunion City!
Midnight City is an eternal jam
Good deal, will do neekabro!
Still gotta get through The Killers new jam though, listened to "The Man" and was like uhh ok maybe I'm not ready to do this yet lol
Lemme know whatcha think man, Wait's is almost as devastating as the song itself!
I feel like you put 1039 up there just to trigger me
I feel eventually you sorta develop your own rating system and assign your own meaning to the numbers, that's my take on it.
I certainly don't stick to sputnik's rating system and I consider my 3.0s to be throughly enjoyable
Neeka ! < 3 Great work and congrats on 500. ((: I would disagree a little on the 3.0/3.5 distinction. I consider a 6/10 good. Nothing particularly special, but definitely good. And so 7/10 would be a *very* good - which I'd define as great, but then again, most definitions of great kind of almost mean the same as amazing or excellent, in that they all mean considerably above average, so I get where you're coming from with that one. But all the rest I agree on, especially your 5.0 description. Also, what a 500th rating!
@Drifter, you're not entirely wrong...
@superluminals, that's fair man!
Blushful!! Thanks dude (: That makes sense to me, I just feel like there has to be a buffer between something average and something truly good, but to each their own I suppose! Indeed, how do you feel about Sufjan? I've had some trouble enjoying him until that album, which I still feel like I don't like as everyone else but still haha
I understand that for sure. I also suppose within that context that ratings are, more often than not, weighted towards "liking" something, which I think is kind of helpful and is less jaded and clinical than using 2.5 as an exact midpoint. It almost encourages giving merit to albums that you don't necessarily *like*, but still think are kind of "good" based on some """objective""" standard.
With regard to Sufjan, I getcha. While I do think that Illinois probably deserves a 4+, I haven't rated it because for whatever reason it just doesn't click with me - I couldn't name a single track on that album. Have you listened to All Delighted People? It's definitely the album (EP) that broke through to me, and IMO is his most easily digested (despite how over the top it is), bar something like Carrie and Lowell.
i dont respect anyone with a sub-80 objectivity rating
its not that complicated
@Blushful, I suppose that's fair, never thought of it that way! Yeah I hear you, it didn't click with me totally either. I haven't heard that yet but it's up next before Age of Adz and I wasn't sure if I was gonna jam it but I suppose I'll have to now!
@Toad, but I like your kermit av ):
@sixdegrees what isn't?
lol i joke m'boi
i just started grading harder bc the bottom end of my spectrum had a lot of space and now i can better differentiate between my 3's, 3.5's, 4's and 4.5's
@nocuffin, the gift that keeps on giving, don't think I can ever change it
@Toad, haha that's an interesting way of fixing the problem
