Return of the Astro​-​Goth

Archelirion

The only rec with a female MC and it’s really sweet. Yugen sounds completely natural here. She doesn’t use her sex as a way to add forced uniqueness to the album, it simply just sounds professional. “Return of the Astro Goth” makes use of the electronic elements and turntable scratches that we all love in our hip hop but alongside eastern/asian instruments as well. The production is soft yet the music is ironically quite lethal in execution.

A jazzy, light as air, and smooth outing from Milo here. Rory proudly wears his influences on his sleeve (artists like Jun Seba undoubtedly) but “Who Told You To Think” still manages to be original and create gorgeous imagery. An album for looking at the ceiling of your dimly lit apartment shrouded by the smoke of your roached spliff. The use of vocal distortion was a little overdone by the time the album was reaching a close but it’s possibly my only *big* complaint about the record.

Some “horrorcore” for those dark spoopy nights, Wu Tang style. No, the album won’t be giving you nightmares or make you shit your briefs but “6 Feet Deep” delivers an impressive and dark east coast hip hop experience. The album is infatuated with encapturing the style and feel of old school horror flicks. It is able to do this quite effectively through the use of surreal yet quirky samples, bleak lyricism, and unhinged vocal delivery. All members here do a great job but RZA is especially exceptional. (Okay i lied “Diary of a Madman” may make you look over your shoulder once or twice).

I suppose the best way to describe this album to a new listener is to have them look no further than the album artwork. Its colorful, in your face, and nearly nonsensical. Regan Farquhar’s versatile line delivery allows him to bring the listener a multitude of styles at light speed all on top of experimental and just plain fun beats. Don’t go into this record expecting any deep or philosophical meaning, but do go into it if you want a witty and immensely entertaining hip hop experience.

Yet another album brought you by a Wu Tang member. GZA’s “Liquid Swords” is different than “6 Feet Deep” though. And by different I mean subtract the horror movie aesthetic and add honest New York backstreet storytelling (it’s possibly still “horror” depending on how you look at it). Beats never get overly complex here but they’re not meant to. No matter how many snare hits or string instrument backdrops arise, GZA’s lyrical foreground is almost always deadly serious and strangely haunting. This is only amplified by RZA’s signature production job. Normally not my style of rap, but this one was still pretty damn enjoyable and I can understand the near universal acclaim it has received.
