Friday13th
09.13.17 | Voting ends next Friday (Sept 22), so we get a little more than a week for these two. |
Papa Universe
09.13.17 | here we go |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.13.17 | Oh yay, I'm on first round. As I said, if you people could find a better place to listen to 801, that would be great since that vid is missing a couple of tracks and its audio quality isn't that great imo |
Jethro42
09.13.17 | I cancelled my first choice cos I didn't find any streaming for the album. I only found half of the songs on Spotify :( |
TwigTW
09.13.17 | I vote 801 Live . . . Ok, I'll wait and listen to the other album before voting, but 801 Live has been a favorite since... forever! |
Friday13th
09.13.17 | @Gentleman If you look on wikipedia, it shows that the songs you mentioned were only on collector's editions and not on the original release. Still worth checking out, but the album on youtube is complete. |
TwigTW
09.13.17 | 801 Live is on Spotify, but if you search under 801 the album doesn't come up. It is incorrectly filed under Phil Manzanera. :-/ |
Friday13th
09.13.17 | @TwigTW does it have the collector's edition tracks? |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.13.17 | I might be the sole guy that doesn't like spotify lol |
TwigTW
09.13.17 | No, it's the original track list. Those songs aren't included. |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.13.17 | damn that's sad, cause Fat Lady of Limbourg is SOOOOOO good |
TwigTW
09.13.17 | I didn't know there was a collectors edition. I'd like to hear that. I guess I'll be hunting it down |
Friday13th
09.13.17 | @Gentleman Well the Eno solo version is on Taking Tiger Mountain. I actually have that CD. |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.13.17 | Yeah, most tracks on the album are by Eno, Quiet Sun or covers |
TwigTW
09.13.17 | 801 Live might be the only (non-bootleg) live album that Eno appears on. If there is another one, I've never heard of it. |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.13.17 | Well, there's the other 801 live albums hehe |
bnelso55
09.13.17 | Loving the bass in 1. Will be checking 2 tomorrow. |
CusmanX1
09.13.17 | That bass |
TwigTW
09.13.17 | Yeah, that noodling bass in "TNK" is wonderful.
@MrSirLordGentleman: Now You've given me 2 more albums to hunt down. :)
|
CusmanX1
09.13.17 | 801 Live has something that reminds me the '80s |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.13.17 | @Cusman probably the sexy synths |
CusmanX1
09.13.17 | Yeah, but not only that. It's the almost-funky bass, the energetic style of drummer and maybe even the production. Pretty ahead of its time |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.13.17 | It was one of the first live albums in which each sound was directly transfered to the mixing studio instead of just being recorded through a microphone, which is why it has a sound quality that's so ahead of its time |
bgillesp
09.13.17 | I'll get on them tonight! |
CusmanX1
09.13.17 | @MrSirLordGentleman: I didn't know it, that's cool |
TheSpaceMan
09.13.17 | just finished both, my vote goes towards 801. was a great album, amazing start and production but it did start to loose steam at the end. dinosaur swamp was fun but not my style |
Papa Universe
09.13.17 | I've heard both too, but I'll wait with my vote. So far leaning heavily towards... [TO BE CONTINUED] |
Friday13th
09.13.17 | XD prog meeeeeeeeemes |
Jethro42
09.13.17 | no 2 is playful music. These guys seem to have fun doing what they do. But wait, it's no serious music lol. Country, gospel, jazz, blues and proto-prog in a dated but funny sounding with that tickling brass. The gospel/soul moments remind me of Jesus Christ Superstar, and it's a good thing. Musicianship is great. Don't know what to do with it after one listen. |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.14.17 | BABY'S ON FIRE, BETTER THROW HER IN THE WATER
srsly that song is hilarious |
SCREAM!
09.14.17 | I think that'll be my problem with 2. Country and gospel aren't genres I typically go for but I have to say, their ability to fuse so many different genres together into a cohesive package is impressive. I enjoyed it overall although I too am leaning more towards one but will give both albums some more listens since Friday has given us such a generous window to do so! |
Jethro42
09.14.17 | I agree with you SCREAM, they know how to merge those genres together at their advantage. I definitely prefer the jam rock style of 801. Album starts strongly and it seduced me. I'm not a fan of the adding of The Kinks cover though, and it's true it loses meat on its 2nd half, but it's a great listen overall. 801 gets my vote.
|
Friday13th
09.14.17 | Oh man, 801 is just fantastic. It helps that I'm familiar with the Eno songs "Baby's on Fire", "Sombre Reptiles", and "Third Uncle" as well as the Beatles and Kinks covers. It's all done very well and with a distinct twist. I still gotta find the original Manzanera tracks to make a proper judgment. |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.14.17 | I prefer side2 really. You Really Got me is the only one I don't love on it |
Jethro42
09.14.17 | Both Golden Hours and Fat Lady of Limbourgh appear on Youtube, did you know? |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.14.17 | Oh yeah, but not on the album link. I linked them separatedly on the original comment in which I nominated the album |
Jethro42
09.14.17 | I'm not sure to understand...Is it too early to vote for 801? Do we have to wait for a full version? A collector's edition? |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.14.17 | I dont think so, since the original version didn't have those songs, I suppose Friday wants us to vote for that one |
Friday13th
09.14.17 | yeah let's just vote based on the original release |
Friday13th
09.14.17 | The Flock is quite impressive. A lot of high-energy jazz rock similar to maybe Chicago at their hardest, and maybe even some Frank Zappa. The vocals might take some getting used to, but the album certainly keeps your attention. |
bgillesp
09.14.17 | I'm leaning 801 after 1 listen each but I definitely paid less attention to the Flock so I'll be relistening a couple more times before I can decide. I'll do little blurbs with my final(ish) opinions |
Mythodea
09.14.17 | 801 was great, really nice sound and the bass was indeed a hihglight. Halfway through the Dinosaur Swamps, though, and even if it's quite extravagant, I love its style and creativity. I was never the guy to listen to americana, but the way it's blend in here, really makes it interesting. I thought I'd give my vote to 801, but the mindset of The Flock has won me. Won't vote just yet, however. |
Papa Universe
09.14.17 | Good lord 801 is boring. I wanted to wait with my vote, but this is where I'm at. I can't even get through it on a second listen.
I vote for THE FLOCK and all of its rad magic. |
Mythodea
09.14.17 | The Flock reminded me a lot of McLuhan - Anomaly. The production and horn sections, especially. |
SCREAM!
09.14.17 | Can't say it reminded me of McLuhan much. Both have horns but use them in pretty different styles. Friday's Chicago comparison is closer to the mark imo |
Papa Universe
09.14.17 | So I wrote up a lil' sum'thn:
801 - 801 Live
I'm just gonna go ahead and warn you that I'll take the burden of positivity-ruiner on myself, because I found this album to be utterly boring, even though the instrumental side of things was quite impressive. I had a hard time sitting through it once and I completely gave up half-way through on the second try. It's just not hitting any notes with me. 2.6/5
The Flock - Dinosaur Swamps
This album has an exuberantly jolly and exhaustingly magical atmosphere to it. It seemed as if I found myself in a strange world of happiness and almost Jodorowsky-like surreal weirdness. It is somewhat tiring towards by the end, but is nevertheless extremely fun with breaks. 4.0/5 |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.14.17 | Lol 801 is anything but boring |
Papa Universe
09.14.17 | Obviously, I beg to differ. |
Frippertronics
09.14.17 | Eno is the best part of it and he's barely even on it
the ACNE album is better if you want a live collaboration involving Eno |
Papa Universe
09.14.17 | Nah, in all honesty, I don't remember listening to a single thing he's been involved with that I liked. |
Frippertronics
09.14.17 | should add the album is mostly Kevin Ayers with Eno/Nico and John Cale involved (as with 801, the album isn't the complete show as the ACNE album has two songs from Eno and Cale, one from Nico then like five from Ayers) |
Jethro42
09.14.17 | @Friday, I agree for some Zappa vibes for The Flock. |
TwigTW
09.14.17 | Listening to The Flock for the first. The album's genre jumping could easily sound gimmicky, but it doesn't, so I give the band credit for that. I'm liking it. |
bgillesp
09.14.17 | Only listened to Ayers' Joy of a Toy but was so creeped out by it I couldn't give it another chance. Dude seemed like a major weirdo |
Sabrutin
09.14.17 | I remember Dinosaur Swamps reminded me of 70s Chicago too when I heard it, think I'll jam that one first |
Mythodea
09.14.17 | @Scream, Well, probably you're right, haven't delved into Dinosaur Swamps yet, heard it only once. The overall sound, however, brought McLuhan into mind more than once.
Why is everyone saying 801 is boring? It's business as usual, but definitely not boring. People make it sound like it's a drag to even put it on. |
Friday13th
09.14.17 | I don't think 801 Live is boring at all, and I think only UniqueUniverse said so. That's a little more understandable if you don't like other Eno works, but it's one of the least boring albums he's done. Albums like Another Green World and Ambient Music rule and all, but those are prime candidates for the "boring" criticism. |
Papa Universe
09.14.17 | Welp, it wouldn't be a competition if everyone agreed with one another, aye? |
wham49
09.14.17 | ok, so what is the verdict on where to get 801 |
wham49
09.14.17 | ok I found it on Amazon prime, are we listening to the 2 disk version? |
Mythodea
09.14.17 | i listened to the youtube one, i think it was the standard one |
Friday13th
09.14.17 | @wham49 the youtube link has the original release that we are basing our vote on. You can listen to longer versions if you want. |
Papa Universe
09.14.17 | Shit, it's even longer? |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.14.17 | "Shit, it's even longer?"
Shit, it's even better?* |
Divaman
09.14.17 | This is a little off-topic to our contest, but I figured you guys are the right people to ask. King Crimson is out on tour and coming my way in November. Are any of you planning on seeing them on their current tour? Have you seen any live versions of King Crimson in the past? Thanks. |
TwigTW
09.14.17 | I saw this version of King Crimson 2 years ago. Not sure what kind of info you are looking for, but they have three drummers now, so it really is a wall of sound. It’s thick with drums and saxophone and guitars. It really hits you hard (in a good way). What surprised me the most was Fripp was just one of the guys. I expected to see him spotlighted front and center, but no. They didn’t do anything from the Adrian Belew period, (which disapointed me a little), but they included more obscure tracks from the early years. They have a new EP out covering Bowie’s ‘Heroes.’ I guess they’re playing it in the encore on this time around. They were great. Don’t miss them. |
p4p
09.14.17 | u still listen to prog? shiit man the world keeps spinnin n u just standin there |
Sabrutin
09.14.17 | Didn't remember Hornschmeyer's Island to be this trippy |
wham49
09.14.17 | so would that be just disc 1 F13 |
Mythodea
09.14.17 | that sounds like a spectacular show |
Divaman
09.14.17 | Yeah, I'm thinking you convinced me Twig. I never really thought about Crimson as a live band one way or the other, but this sounds like it should be interesting. |
TwigTW
09.14.17 | My words don't do them justice, but they were great. |
Friday13th
09.14.17 | @Divaman what Twig said. I saw them in July and it rocked. Save money and get the live Bluray/CD tour Radical Action set and you'll have the memory forever. They play the tunes different enough to stay interesting but not too far out to be unrecognizable. |
Jethro42
09.14.17 | I've seen King Crimson for Beat and for Three of a Perfect Pair tours in the early 80's. If memory serves well, for the first show they played Discipline and Beat nearly in their entirety, plus maybe Red (the song), Easy Money and Schizoid Man. It was sensational and generous indeed. Fripp were sitting in a chair all the shows long. And when he got wild on guitar, he raised a leg haha... |
Papa Universe
09.14.17 | Listening to the Flock for about the fifth time. It's growing off me, but is still damn fun. |
Friday13th
09.14.17 | oh boy haha. I think Close to the Edge would grow off me if I heard it 5 times in two days. |
Jethro42
09.15.17 | Fiori-Seguin (Cusman's choice) is a mess. Songs are all in a bad order, and one of the best songs (''Ça Fait Du Bien'') is missing. We can find that song elsewhere on youtube, but even there...well, it's too bad I guess. |
Divaman
09.15.17 | Re/King Crimson - Don't know if you're familiar, but there's a site called Setlist.FM that enlists fans to post the setlist to shows they attend. I guess KC is on a break now since July, but you can follow what they were playing during their sets up there. |
Divaman
09.15.17 | Back on topic, I've given them each a first listen. I know which way I'm leaning, but I'll wait to say until I'm ready to vote. |
Divaman
09.15.17 | Feel free to skip this post -- no offence will be taken. I wanted to post a little about how I hear music, to hopefully explain my votes.
1. I'm not a musician, beyond being able to noodle around a little on guitar;
2. Vocals are very important to me. And if you've got some good vocal harmonies, so much the better;
3. I tend to be very positive towards bands that use a lot of synths and/or keyboards (although I'm less fond of the organ than I am of piano, harpsichord, etc.); I also like well-played acoustic guitars;
4. I'd much rather hear strong songwriting with basic instrumentation than brilliant musicianship on so-so songs;
5. I like stuff that's melodic; I'm not crazy about stuff that's harsh sounding;
6. As far as prog rock goes, I'm partial to bands that mostly mix rock with classical or folk; I'm not crazy about bands with heavy jazz influences; and
7. If the band has some Celtic or English Renaissance sounds, again, so-much the better. On the other hand, stuff with a fair degree of German synthesizer music is good too.
I'll vote on Round 1 tomorrow. |
bnelso55
09.15.17 | "Crabfoot" may be my favorite from 2. What a fun track. |
TwigTW
09.15.17 | @Divaman: ha ha--I see I've lost one vote and it isn't even my round yet!
The flock is definitely growing on me. I hear Chicago in there, and Little Feet too, but they are definitely their own band. I'm liking them more with every listen. |
Divaman
09.15.17 | lol. Sorry to hear that Twig. You get some bonus points because they're from Switzerland, though. 99.9% of my knowledge of prog rock bands is of bands from Britain or the U.S., so I really appreciate all of the entries you guys have thrown me from Switzerland, Greece, Portugal, France/Germany, Italy and the French part of Canada. The only entry besides my own that I was previously familiar with is Todd Rundgren (although of course I know Brian Eno and Roxy Music from the 801 Band). So I promise I'll listen with an open mind. |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.15.17 | Crabfoot [2] |
wham49
09.15.17 | well we all know what direction Diva is going with his vote in round 1.
I 2 am not a musician and tend the hear the band as a whole and not concentrate on one musician, I like to see interplay between the musicians and the meandering road they take. I like an overall sound instead of just songs sounding different from each other on albums, but I do like diversity in a band, unless it is something like Motorhead, where they got it right the first time and change in their case would be bad. Vocals are not really important to me unless they are bad, or overpower the music |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.15.17 | vocals are important for me but not in prog since, let's face it, most prog has average vocals |
wham49
09.15.17 | those who like 2 should check their debut very good as well |
Jethro42
09.15.17 | @wham, yes, I'm starting listening to it at the moment. Youtube automatically showed me that album right after Dinosaur Swamp. Band features Jerry Goodman, the former and maestro violonist of Mahavishnu Orchestra. |
wham49
09.15.17 | did not know that, cool, I ran into this band by accident picked up their debut about 5 years ago and spun side one and remember liking it, coming home from work last friday stopped a rummage sale by my house and they had Dinosaur swamps, remembered them and brought it home, that night I got asked to join the list and thought what the hell, weirdness |
Jethro42
09.15.17 | I can see why you appreciated them in the first place. Side one of their debut album is an enjoyable listen...I'm in for side two :) It's an easier listen than Dinosaur Swamps so far. More simple, more melodious too. I could see you digging Yezda Urfa - Boris. Not exactly the same style, but for some reasons, I find some similarities, probably in the way both bands can be eccentric. Yezda Urfa deliver some magical melodies as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51L2fMDv6YE |
Divaman
09.15.17 | >vocals are important for me but not in prog since, let's face it, most prog has average vocals
I don't know that that's mostly true, though, especially in the prog rock bands I like the best. Jon Anderson has a beautiful (if somewhat Hobbit-like) voice, and Yes always had great harmonies. I've always felt that Greg Lake had, perhaps, the most beautiful male voice in all of rock. Ian Anderson and Gary Brooker each have very distinctive voices, and while I appreciate they're not for everyone, I really like both. Annie Haslam, Dave Cousins -- I could go on and on about singers in prog rock bands whose vocals add something special to the music. |
Jethro42
09.15.17 | ''Jon Anderson has a beautiful (if somewhat Hobbit-like) voice''
Lol so true.
Your list can go on and on, Diva. But you named some of the greatest indeed.
|
MrSirLordGentleman
09.15.17 | Jon Anderson is a good example of great vocals in prog, agreed |
Divaman
09.15.17 | So no surprise based on what I told you earlier, my vote in M1 goes to 801.
Here are my thoughts:
Vocals are pretty much a wash. Both are OK, neither are great. I probably like 801's vocals a little better. Same thing with songwriting -- with just a few exceptions, not many of the songs blew me away as songs.
With 801:
-- I liked what Eno was doing in various spots, although I wish they'd used him more throughout.
-- Any time you throw me a funny, goofy song like "Baby's on Fire", it's a plus
-- I particularly loved the guitar work on "Diamond Head"
-- The Kinks cover didn't bother me the way it did many of the rest of you. I kind of liked it.
With The Flock:
-- Often sounded like Chicago meets The Grateful Dead to me. A slight positive -- I mildly like Chicago, I like the Grateful Dead a little more.
-- Other times, they reminded me of Donovan, at least vocally
""Hornschmeyer's Island" -- Psychedelica with brass. Interesting.
-- "Lighthouse" and "Crabfoot" were both too harsh sounding for my taste
-- Think I liked "Mermaid" best -- like Donovan with cool violins
-- I liked their playfulness. Ultimately, though, a little too over the top for me sometimes, a little too blues based at other times.
Two fun entries to start our little contest off. Thanks to both LordSirGentleman and Wham49 for their recs.

Jethro42
09.15.17 | I don't know anything about Chicago, except for their radio hits. Same for Grateful Dead. When you face off with a new listen such as The Flock, without having no reference at all with any other bands, it's hard to be objective in opinions while listening. I mean, if I was familiar with Chicago for instance, I could appreciate more The Flock, probably. That band sounds unique to my ears, but it's not necessarily a good thing when I have no other bands in reference. Their first album is def better btw. |
Divaman
09.15.17 | A lot of the lit I've read over the last few days on The Flock references both Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears, but based on this album, I'd say that even if you were more familiar with those two bands, it would only help just so much with a frame of reference. Based on this album, I'd say The Flock is more weird and more eclectic than either of those two bands. As for The Grateful Dead, it's just a trace I hear in The Flock. But the Dead have a bunch of strong vocal harmonies (at least on their studio work), and better songwriting. |
Jethro42
09.15.17 | Will definitely try the first 2 Chicago, and also Chicago VII which all have high ratings on Progarchives. I wish I knew these albums before hearing Dinosaur Swamps... |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.15.17 | dude!!!!!
Chicago's debut is one of the best double albums ever |
Sabrutin
09.15.17 | If anyone's interested Chicago's 70s stuff is definitely worth hearing. The debut album especially is a must listen for anyone who loves adventurous music. Anything up until (and including) Chicago VII is worth a listen in my opinion, and the albums are quite unpredictable. For example VI was their friendlier album yet but then VII turned out to be their most experimental since the early days. If you want to wash the radio hits flavour off your mouth check the track called "Devil's Sweet"
EDIT: SirLord kinda beat me to it |
Jethro42
09.15.17 | @SirLord; Yeah their first 3 albums are all double I heard :(
Thanks for the infos Sab :) |
Sabrutin
09.15.17 | I'll shut my mouth now or I'll turn this into a Chicago thread lol. Just know that "Goodbye" is one of my favorite songs in the universe because ~emotions~ |
Friday13th
09.15.17 | One of the best things about prog is the variety of instrument "voicings", and the same thing goes for the singers. Character of a singer's voice is very important imo, and prog has a variety of immediately identifiable voices. They're not all Freddie Mercury, but even an average-ranged singer like Ian Anderson is so distinctive and adds to the unique flavor of the mix. |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.15.17 | "Character of a singer's voice is very important imo, and prog has a variety of immediately identifiable voices. "
Why I love Supertramp. Reason No. 214 |
Mythodea
09.15.17 | This competition might actually reignite my love for 70's prog rock discoveries. This thread is great guys. |
wham49
09.15.17 | The reference to Flock sounding like the Dead is something that I first thought of when listening to the band, more early 70's Dead where they fused folk/country rock with psych and jazz, they just have that sound of what comes from fusing those forms of music, and since the Dead are my alltime fave's and I like early CHicago it hit for me, almodt like a 30"s spiritual under the tent a little of this and that, old timey flavor too it |
wham49
09.15.17 | yes Sub the first Chicago transit authority is where it is at, the jazz rock thing is at its mainstream pinnacle on this, it jumped the shark at some point 5-6 years later, but at its best the jazz rock thing was great |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.15.17 | my vote goes to 801 even though Flock was way more interesting than I thought. It really has some awesome moments |
bnelso55
09.15.17 | I doubt any of the choices in this tourney will be easy for me. This one certainly isn't. Both albums have awesome moments and qualities that I like. That said, my vote goes to 2. |
Divaman
09.15.17 | Off topic again, but I've got another prog rock rec some of you might like. Frogg Cafe. They're from my home town of Long Island, NY, and over the last decade and a half, they've made a nice little reputation for themselves in American prog rock circles. I recommended them to Jethro a few months back, and he really liked them. I find that they have moments of sublime beauty, although, a lot of the time, they're too jazzy for me. But I'm proud of the national rep they've created for themselves, even if parts of their music aren't really my cup of tea. |
Jethro42
09.15.17 | @Diva; The only things that put jazzy ingredients in Frogg Cafe are the horns, and they aren't that much insistant. Band is really creative, in the vein of Univers Zero imo, if you know them, and it also reminds me of Miriodor. The latter is still more leaning towards jazz though. Univers Zero is more from the - eclectic - prog side of the equation. I'm listening to the last Frogg Cafe album atm, and I still enjoy them a lot. I'm really happy you showed me these guys :) |
Friday13th
09.16.17 | Okay I'll start tallying.
Jethro: #1
Unique: #2
Gentleman: #1
bnelso55: #2
And I'm throwing my vote behind #1, so tally as it stands is:
3-2 |
Divaman
09.16.17 | My vote was #1 |
Divaman
09.16.17 | Sad news for prog fans - just read that Yes has cancelled the rest of their current tour due to the death of Steve Howe's son Virgil. |
Friday13th
09.16.17 | @Divaman You posted today: "I'll vote on Round 1 tomorrow" so I assumed you hadn't made up your mind.
Yeah, heard about Yes and Howe's son on facebook. Sad.
New tally: 4-2 |
Friday13th
09.16.17 | Just got "Face Value" by Phil Collins in the bargain bin. I'm gonna do a "Tomorrow Never Knows" marathon ;D |
TheSpaceMan
09.16.17 | I also voted for 1 |
Friday13th
09.16.17 | @TheSpaceMan My bad! I see that.
5-2 |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.16.17 | I'm drunk.and i can say 801 rulz |
Mythodea
09.16.17 | 801 was okay, but I think it's too familiar to be considered prog. The Flock was way more adventurous than 801 and besides, it is an LP so to me it seemed obvious almost from the start I would vote for it, compared to a Live album. My vote goes to The Flock. |
Friday13th
09.16.17 | 5-3 |
Jethro42
09.16.17 | ''Just got "Face Value" by Phil Collins in the bargain bin. I'm gonna do a "Tomorrow Never Knows" marathon''
Great song!...Album has its moments. Among others, cool speedy version of Genesis' Behind the Lines. |
Divaman
09.16.17 | After the feedback I got here, I went ahead and bought my ticket to King Crimson. And while I was at it, I got one to see Martin Barre solo. |

09.16.17 | Pretty sure you wont forget King Crimson, Diva. As for Martin Barre, it could be great as well. I'm not impressed of what I heard (once) from Back to Steel. It was straight forward rock and roll songs. Nothing close to Jethro Tull, except for ''Skating Away''. But I haven't heard the whole album. |
Friday13th
09.16.17 | @Jethro you mean "won't REGRET King Crimson" :] |
Jethro42
09.16.17 | Sometimes I feel I'd be more clear (clearer?) in French, even for the English speakers :) |
Friday13th
09.16.17 | clearer yeah haha |
Jethro42
09.16.17 | Are you bored to watch out my mistakes? lol I do some on every lines...Anyway, coming from you, I take it like constructive criticisms... |
Friday13th
09.16.17 | I usually understand everything you say, but I just don't want you to say things you don't mean. I won't nag you on grammar, but like the difference between "forget" and "regret" changes the meaning so I just want everyone to understand haha |
Jethro42
09.16.17 | Yeah I appreciate that kind of correction. In French my sentence would have made sense. It would go like this; ''Tu n'oublieras pas le groupe de sitôt''. I confess it sounds weird in English. Translation would be something like '' You won't forget the band anytime soon'' (after the show). But now that you're saying it, I still prefer ''You won't regret...'' |
wham49
09.16.17 | it is a close call so that means I have to go with my choice, it leans to more of my personal likes in music sound, and the total randomness of attaining the vinyl
jamming Captain Beyond/ suffieciently breathless right now, like the S/T debut much better, fairly interesting i guess. |
SCREAM!
09.16.17 | 801 started off ahead but 2 has grown on me a little. Might be a tougher call to make than I thought |

MrSirLordGentleman
09.16.17 | damn, at first it seemed like it would be an easy win for 801 lol
well, at least it makes the contest way more interesting |
Friday13th
09.16.17 | Bring out the popcorn! |
Jethro42
09.16.17 | My ears are more used to The Flock since I've listened to their first album. I probably prefer that one over Dinosaur Swamps. It's more accessible, easier to listen to and more ''serious''. |
Friday13th
09.16.17 | Have you heard Chicago, Jethro? Chicago fits that description. |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.16.17 | I think he said he'll check at least the debut
Don't know if it is really your style Jethro (since you weren't a fan of Sound of Stylistics, I don't know if you're too fond on horns and stuff like that) but still you should end up seeing it has tons of quality |
Jethro42
09.16.17 | Chicago are a priority to me, Friday. Their first and best albums are double albums, maybe that's why I'm not hurry :P |
Friday13th
09.16.17 | yeah check their first two |
Jethro42
09.16.17 | I have nothing against the horns, if it's well done and used in moderation. Who are Sound of Stylistics, are they that funky band you showed me once, SirLord? |
SCREAM!
09.16.17 | I've only heard CHicago II and VII but both are solid albums. Should take the time to look into more of their stuff
Too much music, too little time I tell ya |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.17.17 | @Jethro Yep m8 |
Jethro42
09.17.17 | Ok, it's more exactly ''The Sound Stylistics''. I loved some parts of it a lot, but for some reasons, I had hard time to listen to it from start to finish. I guess I can't stand ''pure'' funk stuff for too long. My favorites in the genre are Screaming Headless Torsos, probably because they dilute their funk with jazz-rock and a bit of prog. |
Jethro42
09.17.17 | @SCREAM, according to Progarchives, their first two or three and Chicago VII are the best ones, so yes... |
MrSirLordGentleman
09.17.17 | @Scream check the debut ASAP |
Frippertronics
09.17.17 | in keeping with true fripp tradition in times of laziness, a five word description to determine my thoughts:
801 - 801 Live : "wasted potential awash with synth"
The Flock - Dinosaur Swamps : "chicago, this time with dinosaurs"
801 (3.2) > Dinosaur Swamps (2.7) |
TwigTW
09.17.17 | Now you all have got me interested in Chicago again, I haven't listened to them in the longest time. |
Snowdog808
09.17.17 | I vote for Dinosaur Flocks. It honestly reminds me a lot of early Chicago in some places and John McLaughlin projects in others with enough done on its own to keep it fresh. |
TheIntruder
09.17.17 | As an outsider in the contest, here is my vote: 801. After listen to both albums several times, I decided by 801 with a 4.5. |
Friday13th
09.17.17 | Fripper: #1
Snowdog: #2
TheIntruder: #1
Welcome, TheIntruder. You're in; you can vote as long as you hear both albums.

09.17.17 | I counted your vote, just clarifying :] |
bgillesp
09.17.17 | 801- 801 Live (1976): some sections a bit overlong without enough development, great bass lines, some really great playing overall too, some fun lyrics, you really got me cover was meh, 3.9/5
The Flock- Dinosaur Swamps (1970): not a fan of the backup chipmunks, I like the jazzy notes, so much variety to keep it interesting but there were parts that just didn't work (like featuring Alvin or the last track's chorus), 3.7/5
Close Call but 801 gets my vote |
bgillesp
09.18.17 | Actually Imma go 4.0 for the 801. I posted before I finished that last listen and I need to bump it a bit. My ranking of the two is static at this point though |
Friday13th
09.18.17 | @bgillesp ? so is that a vote for 801 or not? |
SCREAM!
09.18.17 | Going 801 as well but it was a very tough call. The Flock grew on me and I enjoyed it a lot but in the end the deciding factor was me imagining myself walking into a record store with $10 and only being able to pick up one and 801 gets it |
Friday13th
09.18.17 | 8-5 |

09.18.17 | After four very attentive hearings of both albums, I have my final veredict.
First, I must say that I never heard anything about the existence of the album of The Flock. Second, I knew the existence of the album of 801 and I even listen to it before, but for many years I lost any kind of contacts with it. Unfortunatelly I haven't a copy of it in my collection.
About both albums:
The Flock - Dinosaur Swamps:
I must confess that I like very much the album and it was a really surprise for me. It's better than I thought in the first sight. This is an album very fun but it's not my style. It sounds too much to the 60's, and I'm not a great fan of the 60's. By the other hand it also has too much influences of country, which I'm not a great fan too. Still, the album is full of playful music. I'm sure these guys seemed to have fun doing what they do, which is great, ranging very styles of music, probably too much, on the same record. But it even sounds to me too much dated too. So and in short, despite all I said before, I think this is a very good album. I rated it with 3.5.
801 - 801 Live:
This is one of the best live albums of the 70's, a trully classic. It has an amazing line up. It's hard to talk about all of them. I should have to write many lines to talk about the qualities of all the musicians involved. But, above all, it's a real pleasure to have the opportunity to hear such great gifted prog artists, together. The production of the album is irreproachable and the bass line on it is really incredible. It has also a terrific rythm section all over it and has some of my favourite prog artists, too. All in all, this is a classic live album from the 70's. I rated it with 4.5.
So, my vote goes to 801 Live.
Cheers, and congratulations for this prog tourney, Friday 13th. |
Friday13th
09.18.17 | @e21 Good analysis. Hope everyone is also having fun jamming these.
I'll add that 801 has an irreproachable lead at this point. Some next steps I suggest to anyone who wants more digs is Phil Manzanera's first album and Eno's first 3 albums to hear 801 Live songs in a different context. Also, I'm gonna listen to The Flock debut.
10-5 |
e210013
09.18.17 | Good pointed, Friday. Nothing better than to listen to both versions to have a final conclusion. |
wham49
09.18.17 | well that sucks, bounced out pretty early |
Papa Universe
09.18.17 | Don't worry, mate. You were my champion.. |
e210013
09.18.17 | Sorry, wham. But 801 Live is too strong. Still, you brought to us a really very good album. Congratulations, buddy. And don't be sad. Keep on proggin. |
Jethro42
09.18.17 | @wham; I'm still hesitating between both albums atm... Like I said before, The Flock has grown on me especially since I discovered their debut album. Friday13th has a good flair for matching up two ''compatible'' albums together. He has the knack for it. Score could have been tighter than this if people would give The Flock few more spins. |
SCREAM!
09.18.17 | Yeah, the 10-5 score looks bad btu I know for me it was a tough call. I had to give it to either and 801 just out edged it but both albums were great and a lot of fun |
TwigTW
09.18.17 | Even though Dinosaur Swamps was a lot of fun, 801 Live is a long-time favorite of mine (for many of the reasons e21 already listed). I would vote for it over my own entry, so I'm going to vote for it now. |
e210013
09.18.17 | @ Friday 13th
I have a suggestion.
Since many of we have already voted and because many of us are very busy, I suggest, if you don't mind and if you are ready for it, to announce the next two competitors. Thus we would have more time to listen to the albums more carefully. Of course, keeping the same dates already defined. |
Friday13th
09.18.17 | 11-5
@e21 I want to keep the schedule for a new match on a Friday. I just don't wanna be rushing anyone's time. I'll post it early if everyone has voted already, but we're still waiting for a few people. Starting early has a domino effect and people will be confused. |
e210013
09.18.17 | Ok. It's fair. |
wham49
09.18.17 | congrats sir Lord, Great album you brought to the table. After I heard it I knew I was in trouble. The FLock does closer represent the music I listen to. Not really country but the 60's country rock like neil Young and the Dead or Crosby Stils nash and Young kinda stuff, which is the stuff I grew up on. 801 is a great album, but for me, it is too clean. If that makes any sense.
Anyway I hope I turned a couple people on to other forms of Prog and to know where I come from when I say the 70"s was the best, dudes just went for it, and I love that. |
e210013
09.19.17 | Yeah, you did that wham. And I hope that we all were able to do the same, interest people for different kind of things and approaches in music. This is what fascinates me more in prog rock music. We can have at the same time some many great things in so many different shapes. |
bnelso55
09.19.17 | Thanks for nominating The Flock, wham. I'd never heard of them before and I can tell you now that Dinosaur Swamps and their debut will see many more spins in the future. It's fun music. |
TwigTW
09.20.17 | Yeah, the flock is great... and from what Jethro said, the first album sounds interesting. Definitely be checking that out too. |
CusmanX1
09.20.17 | Both ahead of their time, but I'm afraid I prefer #1 |
Jethro42
09.20.17 | @Twig, their first album still has a jazzy mood and brass sections, but it's more focused on blues. Rhythm section is really effective, violin is creative and vocals are better.
@Cusman; I think I prefer their first one too. |
Friday13th
09.20.17 | 12-5 |
Sabrutin
09.21.17 | Uhm think I'll side with The Flock for the simple reason of replayability and variety. Love the trippier parts. That said both albums are valuable and I have to admit that I couldn't spend as much time as I wanted to with them. The match seems over anyway |
Friday13th
09.21.17 | 12-6
It is over, but that's a more reasonable score though haha
