Stuff I listened to in July...

:D
1Pulp
Different Class

Not my thing. After 3 listens the only song that grabbed my attention at all was "Monday Morning." "Mis-Shapes" was okay too actually. Whole album was okay actually... as okay as it gets.

2.5/5 [Britpop]
2Deerhunter
Halcyon Digest

I actually REALLY liked this. "Earthquake" is amazing and "Basement Scene" kept getting caught in my head. Some of the tracks bordered on generic 2010s indie drudgery though... especially "Revival" and "Fountain Stairs."

4/5 [Indie Rock/Psychedelic]
3Grandaddy
The Sophtware Slump

I'm sorry, but I couldn't even give this one a 2nd listen. It was obviously well made production wise and the Y2K concept is neat, but those upbeat songs were such a bore and the mellow ones, while better, didn't even begin to grab my attention either. Especially when "He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot" said "1 2 3 4" as if it was just about to pick up and get crazy... and then it got even mellower somehow. I can't see myself giving this album anymore chances... terrible first impression. :(

2.5/5 [Indie Rock/Space Rock]
4Get Well Soon
The Scarlet Beast O'seven Heads

This one was a toughy since upon first listen, I thought it'd be a massive grower. "Disney" was brilliant too, and I might revisit that whimsical track and some theres possibly, but as a whole I didn't like it enough to rate it high. Unlike the 2.5's on this list though: I could see myself actually rec'ing this to people.

3/5 [Indie/Post Punk?/Folk Rock]
5They Might Be Giants
They Might Be Giants

I was afraid I might hate this for some reason. I always remember this band as a kiddy kind of thing, but the creepiness and adult themes discussed in the lyrics on this album oddly enough negate that perfectly. It's whimsical and diverse and honestly an obvious choice for me. Even though the country parts had to grow on me. "32 Footsteps" is especially amazing.

4.5/5 [Alternative Rock/New Wave/Country]
6Creedence Clearwater Revival
Mardi Gras

What happens when John Fogerty lets the other members write songs lol. All 4 of the songs he sings are good though, especially "Sweet Hitch-Hiker."

2/5 [Southern Rock]
7Patti Smith
Radio Ethiopia

This one is way weirder than Horses and Easter, which I can totally appreciate, but it's also way less focused. "Poppies" and "Distant Fingers" are great though and both remind of Easter's poppiness. Lots of moaning on this album honestly lol.

3.5/5 [Punk Rock]
8Frederic Chopin
Scherzo No.2, Op.31

This is just an 11 minute piano piece I decided to listen to and passionately fell in love with. Hey, any song that can make me emotional from beauty alone is a classic in my book.

5/5 [Romantic Period Piano Music]
9Nine Inch Nails
Add Violence

The new EP, just as good as Not the Actual Events. The static on "The Background World" is neat at first, but then it overstays it's welcome... by a lot. "This Isn't the Place" is really nice though. "Not Anymore" is like a worse version of "The Idea of You" ...

3.5/5 [Alternative Metal/Industrial Rock]
10Mazzy Star
So Tonight That I Might See

"Mary of Silence" alone makes this at least a 3. It's so dark and odd and pretty. The opener and closer are also great, but that middle section gets a little lost on me... "Blue Light" through "Unreflective" really don't do much for me, which is unfortunate since some tracks on here make this seem like a potential 5. Maybe it's a grower.

4/5 [Dream Pop/Psychedelic Folk]
