Film: Q2 2017

Here's all the films I've seen in theaters from in 2017 from April to June. I might have a problem.
1Eagles Of Death Metal
Heart On

Kong: Skull Island: 4/5
Fantastically stylish and pulse-pounding, Kong is a modern action film with just the right mixture of drama, comedy, and even some unexpected grace. Surprised at how much I really enjoyed this film.
2Lady Gaga
The Fame

The Fate of the Furious: 4/5
While it may lack some of the visual flair and emotional poignancy of the previous installment, if F8 proves anything, its that no matter what it seems like the franchise will never run out of inventive sequences and engaging plots. Thrown in Charlize Theron as the series' best villain to boot, and you've got a winner.
3Radiohead
A Moon Shaped Pool

Get Out: 4.5/5
It might not have stuck the landing as well as it could have and the ending may have deflated an opportunity to drive in the message, but Get Out manages to craft a gorgeous, important, and frightening story from the dark depths of inherent racism in our society.
4Quiet Riot
Metal Health

Free Fire: 3/5
Through all the witty dialogue, occasional chuckles, and solid style is a surprisingly empty feature that doesn't manage to make as exciting a picture as its clever concept might have suggested.
5Coldplay
Mylo Xyloto

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: 4/5
Adding depth and a solid villain to the dazzling visuals and established characters, Guardians 2 is a winner, even if the pieces don't all fit together as well as they could have. Also, the climax was a hell of a lot less interesting (visually and otherwise) than it had to be.
6Fleetwood Mac
Fleetwood Mac

Beauty and the Beast: 4/5
An excellent adaptation, even though it feels a bit like a beat-by-beat remake at first and there are far too many new songs, this Beauty and the Beat expands on the characters and story of the original by adding more depth and visual grandeur.
7Beyonce
Dangerously in Love

Everything, Everything: 3/5
It's well crafted and takes an impressive amount of risks, but the whole affair can't help but feel meandering and slow, and the narrative structure very clearly befits a novel more than a film.
8Janelle Monae
The Electric Lady

Wonder Woman: 4/5
Every bit as heroic as it deserves to be, even though the climax was a bit of a letdown and familiar beats from previous superheros can be seen again here. That's not to say that it isn't a well written and fully realized addition to the dwindling DCEU.
9Lou Reed and Metallica
Lulu

The Mummy: 2.5/5
It definitely has good ideas and executes some moments surprisingly well, but an otherwise muddled story and a terrible method of delivering it add up to a lackluster, if occasionally enjoyable, summer movie.
10The Beatles
Rubber Soul

Cars 3: 3.5/5
While it might not live up to the excellence that its plot might suggest thanks to a shaky climax, Cars 3 is a very well paced and intriguing film that improves on its predecessor by finding a story well worth telling.
