Boney's Anticipated Albums 2017
Kind of a pointless list, just tracking all the albums I intend to check out later in the year. If there's something coming out that you think I might be interested in by all means rec it. Will try to update as new albums get announced. (In some cases the exact genres of some of these releases I'm not totally sure of so I've just given my best guess.) |
1 | | John Mayer The Search for Everything
April 14 / Pop Rock
Ok as of posting this list this has already been released where I am. Haven't listened to the Waves he already released but don't have terribly high hopes for this. |
2 | | Angaleena Presley Wrangled
April 21 / Country
Her last album was very good for a pretty standard contemporary country album, kinda hate this album's cover but hopefully there are a few good tunes here. |
3 | | Feist Pleasure
April 28 / Indie Rock (?)
I'm pretty excited to hear this. Her last album Metals was her best yet so I'm hoping this one follows from that. The title track is pretty different for her with a PJ Harvey influenced, bluesy sound. |
4 | | Mark Lanegan Gargoyle
April 28 / Rock
Danielcardoso recommended me his Whiskey For the Holy Ghost album a few months ago and it was very good so I'll be giving this a listen for sure. |
5 | | Willie Nelson God's Problem Child
April 28 / Country
Not expecting much from this, his voice is still great but his last album of original material was pretty lackluster so I doubt this'll be very different. |
6 | | Sylvan Esso What Now
April 28 / Electropop
Their debut was pretty good so this should hopefully be solid. |
7 | | Mac DeMarco This Old Dog
May 5 / Indie Pop (?)
I dig his last album, the released tracks from this are just ok though. Should bring some nice chill vibes nonetheless. I like Mac himself as a person more than his music if I'm being honest but hey let him do his thing. |
8 | | John Moreland Big Bad Luv
May 5 / Americana
Pretty excited for this one. His last album High On Tulsa Heat didn't quite live up to the hype but I have a feeling he'll pull through with this one (despite the awful title). |
9 | | Slowdive Slowdive
May 5 / Shoegaze
Haven't listened to their old work yet, gotta get on that in the next few weeks. I bet this will be lame though. |
10 | | Chris Stapleton From A Room: Volume 1
May 5 / Country
The follow-up to 2015's excellent Traveler is actually the first of two albums Stapleton has planned for 2017. Despite breaking through into the country mainstream this guy is the real deal, should be some great tunes here. |
11 | | Various Artists Cover Stories
May 5 / Americana
This is kind of a weird album. It's a full cover of Brandi Carlile's 2007 album The Story, done by a number of different artists several of whom are far bigger names than Carlile herself. The featured acts range from Dolly Parton to Jim James to The Indigo Girls to Adele to Pearl Jam of all people. It's strange too because the original album isn't even particularly great. It's going to be a weird album, that's for sure. It's for a good cause though, so I can't criticize it too much. |
12 | | The Mountain Goats Goths
May 19 / Indie Folk
The last album wasn't terribly impressive so I'm not sure what to expect from this. Hoping Darnielle pulls through. |
13 | | Justin Townes Earle Kids In The Street
May 26 / Americana
I'm not a fan of this guy's past work - he's the son of the legendary country songwriter Steve Earle but unfortunately he has almost none of his father's talent. Still I'll give this a fair listen or two and hope for the best. |
14 | | Alt-J Relaxer
June 2 / Art Pop
I love their debut but didn't like This Is All Yours, expecting this to fall somewhere in between. |
15 | | Dan Auerbach Waiting On A Song
June 2 / Blues Rock
This the Black Keys' frontman's second solo effort, hoping it's decent. |
16 | | Stevens / Dessner / Muhly / McAlister Planetarium
June 9 / Synthpop (?)
Kind of a strange project this, wasn't a huge fan of the released song but I still expect this to be an interesting listen at the very least. |
17 | | Fleet Foxes Crack-Up
June 16 / Chamber Folk
I'm absolutely hyped for this, definitely the album here I'm most excited for. "Third of May / Odaigahara" is absolutely amazing. I'm really hoping Pecknold and the boys pull through with a classic with this one. |
18 | | Kevin Morby City Music
June 16 / Indie Folk
His album last year was great but could have used some stronger songwriting, hoping this improves on that. |
19 | | Jason Isbell The Nashville Sound
June 16 / Americana
Isbell's last album was excellent if somewhat disappointing after the perfect Southeastern. Apparently this is his return to "rock", accordingly it's billed to Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit. I'm not too keen on the released song, it's a pretty rote country rock song and it's lyrics were well below Isbell's usual standard of quality but I'm keeping my hopes up that this will be great. |
20 | | Ride Weather Diaries
June 16 / Shoegaze (?)
Same deal here as with Slowdive. |
21 | | Jeff Tweedy Together At Last
June 23 / Folk
Tweedy performing a bunch of old Wilco songs and a couple from some side projects in the solo acoustic fashion. I really don't see the point of this as he's mostly chosen classic songs from the Wilco catalogue and there's just no way any of them are going to be better than the originals... Feels kind of like a cheap cash grab to me, and even worse it's apparently the first in a series. |
22 | | Steve Earle So You Wannabe An Outlaw
June 16 / Alt-country |
|
