Coen Brothers Ranked

Probably the best directorial duo out there, but they've had their fair share of eh films.
17Lou Reed and Metallica
Lulu

The Hudsucker Proxy: 2.5/5
A spiraling mess of a film, its greatest moments are effortlessly cut down by a sense of manufactured lifelessness, made all the more cruel by a utter lack of wonder and magic that such a film would obviously need to survive.
16Beyonce
Dangerously in Love

Intolerable Cruelty: 3/5
It's fun and diverting enough when you watch it, but its greatest sin is that when you think back on it, you realize just how trivial it all is.
15Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga
Cheek to Cheek

The Ladykillers: 3/5
It's undoubtedly got the visual flair of the Coen's best works, and the dialogue is always engaging, but not as great as it would be if it were given to characters rather than caricatures. And it all can’t help but feel inconsequential. What’s the point? Apparently, there was none. Get it?
14Green Day
Nimrod

Raising Arizona: 3.5/5
Absolutely entertaining and odd, Raising Arizona is about as pop as the Coen Brothers get. Thanks to that classic sun-baked look and a plethora of solid jokes, the film survives on its own terms, even if its far from being the classic many make it out to be.
13Panic! At the Disco
Pretty. Odd.

Hail, Caesar!: 4/5
This is the Coens at their most carefree, careless, and free they've ever been. There's barely a story here, just quirky characters, hilarious dialogue, great acting, and a love/hate relationship with cinema's past. It just depends on the person whether that's enough.
12Leonard Cohen
You Want It Darker

A Serious Man: 4/5
There once was a skit in Louie where he tried pitching a movie. I think this was his film.
“I always wanted to make a movie where a guy’s life is really bad, and then something happens and it makes it worse. But instead of resolving it, he just makes bad choices, and then it goes from worse to really bad. And things keep happening to him, and he keeps doing dumb things, so his life just gets worse and worse, and darker.”
11Eagles Of Death Metal
Heart On

Burn After Reading: 4/5
For films like The Ladykillers and Intolerable Cruelty, I was frustrated by the lack of meaning in the pictures. The greatest thing this does is admit it has no meaning, and thus is much better for it.
"So what did we learn?"
"I don't know, sir."
"I don't fucking know either."
10Regina Spektor
Begin To Hope

Inside Llewyn Davis: 4.5/5
It isn't exactly an emotionally satisfying movie, but it's one that's surprisingly realistic for its genre, and happens to be both attractive to look at and an absorbing experience. Really good music, too.
9Alanis Morissette
Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie

Barton Fink: 4.5/5
A strange and surreal film about the nightmare of writing a movie; it’s both visually and narratively entrancing. The point of the movie seems to be to prove that it's only just a film. It’s scarily serous even when it begs you to not take it seriously.
8Sturgill Simpson
A Sailor's Guide To Earth

O Brother, Where Art Thou?: 4.5/5
While few of the characters don’t seem to be much more than a series of quirks, the Coens manage to make a very appealing and smart take on "The Odyssey" in this folk musical.
7Kyuss
Welcome to Sky Valley

True Grit: 4.5/5
This stylish and intriguing film crafts a fresh and unique atmosphere from the bits of older westerns. Great dialogue and direction as always, with a little bit of an odd epilogue that doesn't tie in as well as it should.
6Julien Baker
Sprained Ankle

The Man Who Wasn’t There: 4.5/5
I like this one a lot more than most people. It’s a slow, haunted film that is both emotionless but permeated with harrowing sadness, The Man Who Wasn't There is a distressing, but often beautiful work of moving film noir by the Coen Brothers.
5Silversun Pickups
Carnavas

Miller’s Crossing: 4.5/5
A damn attractive and focused movie, the Coens nimbly play off of the noir genre, cleverly twisting it into both a fascinating drama and an amusing comedy.
4Fleetwood Mac
Tusk

The Big Lebowski: 5/5
Deliciously weird, profoundly amusing, "The Big Lebowski" is a blissful combination of hilarity, pitch-perfect dialogue, and a strangely comforting feeling by the end of it all.
3Coldplay
Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends

Fargo: 5/5
A damn masterpiece of the light and dark sides of humanity, Fargo is a film that grows on you every time you watch it. Gorgeously shot and wonderfully written, it has a point to make and every minute is spent proving it.
2TV on the Radio
Young Liars

Blood Simple: 5/5
One of the most visually astounding indie films (maybe just films, period) to grace the screen, Blood Simple is more than an incredible debut but an absolutely incredible film period. Its simple but intricate maze of a plot is a wonderful addition to the noir genre, and any fan of neo-noir should check this out.
1Queens of the Stone Age
Songs for the Deaf

No Country for Old Men: 5/5
A horrifically beautiful film. The silence of the movie allows a more powerful dialogue to take it's place. As difficult as it is, I still find myself watching it often. And every time, for a long while afterwards, I’m put into a distant, disquieted mood. There’s simply nothing like it.
