03.16.17 | Good shit dude I have a lot of these artists on my check list |
guitarded_chuck
03.16.17 | need to listen to more bonnie prince, only listened to i see a darkness |
Astral Abortis
03.16.17 | I recommend Jim O'Rourke's Steamroom series |
theBoneyKing
03.16.17 | Yeah guitar I've only heard I See a Darkness too, it's a 5 but I hadn't had a chance to get any more so I took the opportunity to grab a bunch of Oldham's shit, 17-26 are all him lol.
OvDeath I'll probably stick to his more conventional stuff for now, maybe once I've digested all that I'll try more of his experimental stuff. |
DoofusWainwright
03.16.17 | I approve of everything here
(I haven't spun 12, 17, 20, 21) |
TheSpaceMan
03.16.17 | 12 is the bee's knees |
EphemeralEternity
03.16.17 | downloading is against the sputstitution |
SandwichBubble
03.16.17 | Quite the haul here! You"ll enjoy these for sure. |
Spacesh1p
03.16.17 | FYI your school most probably doesn't track whether you DL torrents or not. I worked in IT at my school and the managers confirmed to us that they only monitor volumes of up/download data.
You can DL loads of data, just watch your uploads. |
EphemeralEternity
03.16.17 | torrenting is blocked at my university including all proxys and believe me if someone found a way it would spread like wildfire coz the internet is insanely fast.
I was downloading at 70mb/s today. sadly it was just course related videos |
theBoneyKing
03.16.17 | Space I have a feeling it's probably fine but I'd prefer not to risk it. It's not that big of a deal most of the time as I can get most stuff I want on Spotify anyways. |
Spacesh1p
03.16.17 | Yeah I DLed on campus at nearly 100mbps depending on trackers.
I didn't take the risk for a while either but after working for IT and getting the inside scoop it was clearly fine. Just depends on how they monitor network traffic. |
Spacesh1p
03.16.17 | You can also use Peerblock if you have a PC. |
zakalwe
03.16.17 | Will give 9 a go. |
EphemeralEternity
03.16.17 | i remember limewire days I was smitten with anything over 100kbps...and if the file I downloaded was the file I wanted...how times have changed |
Spacesh1p
03.16.17 | Me too Ephemeral. Me too. |
theBoneyKing
03.16.17 | Haven't listened to 9 yet zak but it looks really cool. I remember Doof was digging it a while ago so it must be quality!
@Doof 17 sounds particularly interesting, apparently several members of Slint were in his backing band in that one. |
Drifter
03.16.17 | I got 1 at my library in October. Still haven't checked it |
theBoneyKing
03.16.17 | Added some more (27-30)
ok I need to stop now because it's going to take me forever to listen to all this lol |
DoofusWainwright
03.16.17 | 27-29, more great choices
The Fishmans is effectively the one long joyous, strange song
I'll check 12 and 17 soon |
theBoneyKing
03.16.17 | After digging William Tyler and now Jim O'Rourke - Bad Timing a lot I figured it was time to get some more American Primitivism, hopefully 27-30 should satisfy that.
Fahey I know has a million albums and all the rest seem to be on streaming services but Fare Forward isn't even though it seems to be his most popular. Strange. |
DoofusWainwright
03.16.17 | Yup, I had to pick up a physical copy of 'Fare Forward', didn't regret it though, grew on me a lot to the point I had to 5 it |
anat
03.16.17 | 9 is incredible |
DoofusWainwright
03.16.17 | I think 10 will end up one of your favourites from this selection Boney |
theBoneyKing
03.16.17 | I expect most of these to end up in the 4-5 range for me, 10 is one of the most likely to end up a 5 I'd bet. |
TheSpaceMan
03.16.17 | @space i'm pretty sure torrents can and will upload data while you d/l them. mostly of concern would be movies though |
TheSpaceMan
03.16.17 | ooooooh just saw you had 9 on here, that is also the bee's knees |
Ryus
03.16.17 | robbie basho the legend
nice list |
altertide0
03.16.17 | nice, lotsa good stuff. i see you're finally getting into american primitivism, good, although i'd recommend a slightly different set of albums, especially from fahey |
rabidfish
03.16.17 | surpirsed to see few 'downloading is bad hurrrrr duuuuuuhhhhrrr' fags so far...
Downloading is bad, mm'kay? |
theBoneyKing
03.16.17 | Altertide I plan to check more Fahey as well, I just got that one as it's not as easy to find as the others (as I described above). That said, what are your other suggestions? I chose these all based on general popularity. |
theBoneyKing
03.16.17 | Also @rabid I think you're being sarcastic but nonetheless, generally I definitely prefer not to download when streaming is an option as that does provide at least some compensation to the artist. Ideally of course I would purchase everything but that's just not practical with the amount of music I listen to. I'm sure I could get a lot of bargains if I really searched or if I looked in CD bins, etc, but I really don't have much use for physical versions and Spotify is just so convenient.
Really I just think artists need to give up fighting streaming because the fact is that it is never going away and when they resist it they just end up driving people like me to download illegally and that's worse for them. |
rabidfish
03.16.17 | dude, downloading is fine as long as it's your last option (imho, at least) lol... I once had a looooong discussion about this with some douchebag that actually thought that if you couldn't find something you wanted to listen to anywhere legal then the only thing honorable to do is NOT LISTEN TO IT.
it's been 5 years and still... FUCK THAT GUY IMMA LISTEN TO WHATEVER THE FUCK I WANT! |
theBoneyKing
03.16.17 | Yeah I figured you weren't serious, I just thought I'd state my opinion anyways. |
altertide0
03.17.17 | @Boney The Sandy's choices are perfect.
As for Robbie, well, I just think the album is kind of plain and uninteresting compared to his earlier stuff. I'd say it's a "Robbie album for people who don't really like Robbie" if it didn't sound so pretentious. Then again, I guess it is the best starting point if you don't want to go into deep waters too early?
As for Fahey, although the album you picked is great, it's not really the best album to judge Fahey by. Fahey has always been humorous and playful and FFV is just so painfully serious, not really the best album for somebody who wants to get into primitivism based on Bad Timing. I think The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death, Volume 6 or Guitar Vol. 4 would give you a much better idea of what the man's about.
I don't want to taste your patience, the post is already way too long, so I'll just say shortly that almost any pre-1972 Fahey, any pre-1973 Robbie and any pre-1970 Bull is a worthwhile listen. |
theBoneyKing
03.17.17 | Nice re: Sandy.
For Robbie I'll probably stick with this one as the starting point and then try something earlier later on (I'll take a look at your RYM ratings to see what some highlights are).
For Fahey, well personally serious sounds more appealing to me than playful and humorous so FFV might be a better entry point for me personally (not really sure what you mean by the Bad Timing comment - I wouldn't say that that album is terribly playful, though I guess it's not super serious either; that said my actual entry to the genre was William Tyler, whose stuff is definitely pretty serious). But I'll be sure to try those other two out as well.
Good to know that all their early work is worthwhile! |
theBoneyKing
03.17.17 | Added one more dl to the list. This one's probably the biggest outlier from all the others. |
BlushfulHippocrene
03.17.17 | Great list, mate, have fun with them. Joanna's fantastic (Milk-Eyed Mender is close to perfect), and Jim O'Rourke is the best. |
DoofusWainwright
03.17.17 | I'm predicting Boney will prefer 'Ys' to 'Milk Eyed', possibly to the level he 5's 'Ys' (not sure what your 'Divers' rating is but 'Ys' is superior to that one by quite a chalk) |
BlushfulHippocrene
03.17.17 | I love Divers and Ys, but haven't given them nearly as much time as I have Milk-Eyed. In fact, I might listen to Ys again now, I think it might be potential 5; when I was into Joanna, I couldn't get behind the change in her voice between albums, or the longer, more grandiose structures. You're probably right, though, I can see him loving Ys more. That said, Milk-Eyed Mender is a bit folkier from what I remember. |
DoofusWainwright
03.17.17 | My logic was that he loves 'Divers' and 'Ys' is more similar to 'Divers' than 'Milk Eyed'...also I don't really get on too much with 'Milk Eyed' but it was the last of hers I checked |
BlushfulHippocrene
03.17.17 | I'd always thought Divers was more similar to Milk-Eyed Mender, just because the songwriting's a bit more to the point for the most part. |
theBoneyKing
03.17.17 | Divers is a near 5 for me so Ys will probably be a 5. |
theBoneyKing
03.17.17 | I'm kind of worried about Have One On Me though because her stuff is so dense and 2 hours of it is a lot to take in. |
DoofusWainwright
03.17.17 | Treat 'Have One on Me' as three albums I'd say - you could just get into the first disc for a while, that has the more catchy stuff on it. |
theBoneyKing
03.17.17 | Yeah I may treat it like that when I get around to it. |
Spacesh1p
03.17.17 | "@space i'm pretty sure torrents can and will upload data while you d/l them. mostly of concern would be movies though"
It's pretty easy to disable uploading or throttle it to the point of being irrelevant. It's kind of against the spirit of torrents but it does work. |
Spacesh1p
03.17.17 | 31 is cool by the way. |
theBoneyKing
03.17.17 | Listened to 31 last night and it's really really good. |
theBoneyKing
03.17.17 | Ok one more (blame FullOfSounds for this one) |
NeroCorleone80
03.17.17 | check out Bill Callahan (Smog) if you like Oldham, he's even more consistent overall. |
JWT155
03.17.17 | I remember my torrenting days |
