01.16.17 | Boards of Canada - 35 random tracks tape
Airiel - Winks and Kisses: Melted
George Clanton - 100% Electronica
Cocteau Twins - Love's Easy Tears (obscure for most casual fans of the band, I think)
Tatsuro Yamashita - For You (not objectively a 5, but still the best in its genre, so it deserves it theoretically. Happy, beautifully produced, sunshine City Pop from Japan. Some songs are in English or have English parts, which helps make it more accessible than most other City Pop from Japan) |

01.16.17 | fuck you brah |
AsleepInTheBack
01.16.17 | probably Frank Turner - Tape Deck Heart for me. Doesn't justify the 5 status on any objective scale but it means so much to be that I couldn't rate it any less |

01.16.17 | I put up a list a while back where users put forward their most obscure 5 if you wanna check it |
theBoneyKing
01.16.17 | Obscure is such a difficult word to define - for me a lot of my 5s are in genres (namely country) that most people on Sputnik don't listen to, so for people on this site and in general they're obscure, but many of those albums are anything but obscure for fans of those genres so in that sense they're not obscure. |
MarsKid
01.16.17 | Did you ever listen to Terrapin Doof? In retrospect, now that I know your taste better I don't see you liking it much at all. Just wanted more people to check it. |
DoofusWainwright
01.16.17 | I think an obscure 5 here is something that only has 30 or less ratings :/ |
DoofusWainwright
01.16.17 | Mars was that on the Obscure list? Have to be honest I didn't work through that list, ended up more just for people spreading the word about those albums. I might revisit it at some point, I know I've checked some of the albums on that list now just through general exploration |
MarsKid
01.16.17 | It's prog metal/post-metal/post-rock, don't think it's in your wheelhouse |
DoofusWainwright
01.16.17 | I won't lie, that description it's up against it - not insurmountable though, might dig it. I fucking love the word Terrapin though, that's got to be worth a bonus .5 straight off |

01.16.17 | "I think an obscure 5 here is something that only has 30 or less ratings :/"
I would say that refers more to an obscure album than an obscure 5. Plus you can't really put a number on what is or isn't obscure as it varies based genre and release date.
For example on Sput a black metal album with 30 ratings is probably more obscure in general than a country album with 30 ratings. Similarly a 2016 release with 30 ratings is probably more obscure than a 1970 release with 30 ratings.
And additionally if you are one out of three 5/5 ratings on an album with a 3.5 average and 100 ratings I'd still argue that that's an obscure 5 in a sense. |

01.16.17 | I fucking love the word Terrapin though [2]
gonna check it based on that alone |

01.16.17 | True, there are different types of obscure here |
Funeralopolis
01.16.17 | xiu xiu- angel guts red classroom
Imagine a David Lynch styled movie funnelled through pop and noise music. This is where Xiu Xiu takes their signature sound and just tunes everything to its full potential. Haunting, personal, atmospheric and absorbing. It reels you in and creates a space where shouting BLACK DICK can be taken seriously.
fela kuti- shuffering and shmiling
Possibly Fela's best work and very underappreciated. This album is the definition of happiness in the face of rough times, this album reigns joy and celebration of life.
destroyer- kapputt
Destroyer's best by far, very personal and poetic indie pop with lots of bells and whistles with lots of emotion and excellent lyrics. |
TVC15
01.16.17 | I'd like to think I have a lot of obscure 5s |
TheHamburgerman
01.16.17 | My obscure 5's based on the amount of sputnik ratings:
Acoustic Alchemy - Back on the Case (Acoustic smooth jazz that doesn't sound like a shitty porn soundtrack)
Blu Mar Ten - Love is the Devil (Drum and Bass with excellent production value)
Human Fortress - Defenders of the Crown (Smooth power metal with a great vocalist)
T-Ride - T-Ride (Weird glam rock meets groove metal thing with a vocalist that sounds like a combination of Axl Rose and Chris Cornell. The guitar work is chill as fuck)
I used to have more obscure 5's albums but thankfully they're fading away.
