| Bgillesp's 2016 Metal Necessities
These were the albums from the year that blew me away, at least for a significant portion of the album. I know the coverage is a bit thin (I'm still delving through the classics of yesteryear as I'm somewhat new to music and didn't have the time to fully immerse myself in 2016), but I'd recommend these to anyone who enjoys metal. | 1 | | Vektor Terminal Redux
For some reason it seems to have become popular to dismiss this album as heavily overrated, but I for one cannot think of many examples of tighter, more polished, extreme thrash epics out there. This was clearly a highlight of 2016, no matter how popular it got. 4.7/5 | 2 | | Cobalt Slow Forever
I only recently discovered this album despite it being out for most of the year, but it was still an incredibly impressive and unique effort from what I've read to be a highly acclaimed back metal band. This album sees more of a departure from black metal styles and traverses death, doom, hardcore, etc. in a manic yet controlled display of genre-bending goodness. 4.7/5 | 3 | | Ulcerate Shrines of Paralysis
It took me a few listens to get into this album (I think mostly the deep growls were unusual to me at first), but it grew on me quite rapidly once I began to understand it. This is a very well put together, heavy death album that ranks among my early favorites as I explore the genre. 4.6/5 | 4 | | Plini Handmade Cities
Plini is an instrumental progressive metal artist who, unlike animals as leaders, will not necessarily blow you away with virtuosity or creativity, but man, can this guy write some killer melodies. With an incredibly smooth an uplifting first full-length, I am very excited to see what else Plini can do. 4.4/5 | 5 | | Avatar Feathers & Flesh
Avatar hails from the home of melodeath, Gothenburg, Sweden. Although they started out as a (very mediocre) melodeath act, they have since evolved their sound into an incredibly theatrical heavy metal sound. This is their strongest output to date, and even though it doesn't break down any barriers, and the concept isn't going to win any awards, it is easily the most purely fun album I have listened to all year. 4.3/5 | 6 | | Gojira Magma
I have been a long time fan of Gojira, but I began to worry upon the release of L'enfante Sauvage when I felt like their sound was becoming a little too stale. I held out on the pre-order of Magma to see where their sound would go, but to my surprise, what I found was a broken down, more simplistic sound that, while less creative than earlier outputs from Gojira, was their most polished, patient, and controlled album to date resulting in what I believe to be their second best album. 4.2/5 | 7 | | Alcest Kodama
I was relatively new to this almost blackgaze style upon discovery of this album, but the absolutely beautiful sound this album displays was an amazing experience for me (albeit unexpected as black metal is listed in the bands genre tags). 4.1/5 | 8 | | The Devil Wears Prada Transit Blues
People were no less than utterly shocked when hearing this album from the creators of albums like Plagues. Nobody was expecting a progressive metalcore album of serious musical quality. I was skeptical too but they really pulled off something worthwhile here. 4.1/5 | 9 | | Inter Arma Paradise Gallows
This was another album, like Cobalt, that was more of a deep discovery. Hailed by many a critic, I decided to check it, and the interesting blend of sounds ranging from black to doom here was a unique experience that I find an essential point in the 2016 collective discography. 4.0/5 | |

01.06.17 | I know 2016 lists are 12 weeks out of style by now but I was behind the curve a little bit. Maybe next year I can figure out my year end list in the middle of November like everyone else. | ScuroFantasma
01.06.17 | lol, too true | bgillesp
01.06.17 | Anybody got any more recs from the year? I know I need to check Blood Incantation and Howls of Ebb and a couple more. What might be similar to some of these though? | Mystletainn
01.06.17 | you deserve one gold star for the effort | Nazzadan
01.06.17 | Uada, Moonsorrow, Avantasia to name a few. | bgillesp
01.07.17 | I checked Moonsorrow and it was only barely not included on this list for me, but ill look into the others. Thanks |
