My Favorite 10 Who Albums

Its hard to do a list like this for The Who, because you can't just confine yourself to studio albums -- they only ever released 11 of them -- and, on the other hand, many of their more popular early tracks were singles that were released for the first time on compilations. So, with that in mind, here's my list of my favorite 10 Who albums:
10The Who
A Quick One

This one makes the list with the American version released as "Happy Jack". It makes it mostly on the strength of "Happy Jack", "A Quick One" and "Boris the Spider".
9The Who
The Who Sell Out

"I Can See for Miles" is the best song here, but "I Can't Reach You", "Tattoo", "Mary Ann with the Shaky Hands", "Our Love Was" and "Rael" are also winners.
8The Who
Magic Bus: The Who on Tour

This is a much maligned album, but the first album appearances of "Pictures of Lily", and "Magic Bus", plus such lesser-known numbers as "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", "Someone's Coming" and "Disguises" put this album on the list for me.
7The Who
Odds & Sods

I especially love "Pure and Easy" on this one. It's also the first album appearance of "Long Live Rock", plus I've always had a special affection for "Glow Girl" and "Faith in Something Bigger".
6The Who
Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy

Another compilation with some important first album appearances, including the studio version of "Substitute", and "I Can't Explain" plus "The Seeker", and a personal favorite, "I'm a Boy".
5The Who
It's Hard

Another maligned album, but come on! "Eminence Front", "Athena", and "It's Hard", plus "A Man Is a Man" and "I've Known No War". I know there's no Keith Moon, but these are all strong songs.
4The Who
Face Dances

Yet another album without Moon, but it does have "You Better You Bet", "Don't Let Go the Coat", "The Quiet One", "Did You Steal My Money" ... this is a great album!
3The Who
Who's Next

The top three are all pretty obvious, and what order you put them in is just a matter of personal choice. This is one of the great rock albums of all time, but so are numbers 1 and 2.
2The Who
Tommy

I wore my original vinyl copy of this into the ground. Not only a great album, but one of the most important albums in rock history, one that inspired the bands of the seventies to try all kinds of ambitious projects. And two words: "Pinball Wizard".
1The Who
Quadrophenia

My second favorite rock album of all time (right after Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here".) Love, Reign O'er Me!
