Top 10 "new" Opeth songs
10 best tracks from the second stylistic incarnation of Opeth. Also, Sorceress rules. |
10 | | Opeth Sorceress
Sorceress - The self-titled track off the new album is an awesome slice of retro-prog worship. The opening keyboard melody kicks ass and the stomping section that follows is heavy in all the right ways. Still can't figure out what Axe is doing there, even though it sounds so simple. |
9 | | Opeth Pale Communion
Elysian Woes - Seriously overlooked. The vocals are beautiful, the acoustic guitars are gorgeous, and the transition at 3:15 is one of the greatest things they've ever done. |
8 | | Opeth Heritage
I Feel the Dark - This song is way overlooked, and it's too bad. One of the strongest compositions on Heritage, it kicks awesomely into gear with the drums and Mikael's vocal melody is gorgeous, with the middle section bringing the gloom. |
7 | | Opeth Pale Communion
Faith in Others - Probably Opeth's saddest song, and I don't think many would be inclined to disagree. Almost brings tears to your eyes. A beautifully fitting conclusion to Pale Communion. |
6 | | Opeth Heritage
The Devil's Orchard - The song that introduced the world to un-metal Opeth. This shit blew my mind when I first heard it, it was so unexpected. All the twists and turns still hold up pretty well in 2016 and the guitar solo is one of my favorites. |
5 | | Opeth Heritage
Haxprocess - Probably the highlight on Heritage. Incredibly mournful and atmospheric, and the driving middle section is beautiful. Martin Mendez really shines here. |
4 | | Opeth Sorceress
Will o' the Wisp - WotW has to be the easiest god damned song on this list to listen to. Every segment, every melody, every transition is fucking perfect. Jethro Tull worship no doubt, but an utterly magnificent song. |
3 | | Opeth Sorceress
The Wilde Flowers - Probably the highlight on the great new album. The song carries a sinister tone throughout while sounding warmly retro. And that guitar solo. Jesus. |
2 | | Opeth Pale Communion
Eternal Rains Will Come - The first minute of heavy percussive prog gives way to a blissful keyboard melody that kisses the ears and caps off with a stunning guitar solo. Amazing opener. |
1 | | Opeth Pale Communion
Moon Above, Sun Below - MASB is an atmospheric marvel. Listen to that shit at night with headphones and tell me you don't get transported to an eerie forest in the middle of the night. |
