09.13.16 | It's going to be hard to put a PC together that can play current games smoothly on anything other than lowest settings for less than a thousand USD. If you're willing to shop around and be patient, it shouldn't cost too much more, though.
If there are any PC repair shops or used electronics stores in your area, I'd suggest swinging by those and seeing what they might have as a starting point, if budget is your biggest concern. |

09.14.16 | get a cheap h61 board, i5 2400 or similar, i7 3770 if you wanna pay a little more (you're only gonna see real benefits in comparison to the i5 in highly threaded and cpu intensive games like gta v and cities skylines and obv in stuff like video editing), 8gb generic ram and an amd rx 470 |
trve
09.14.16 | also buy a new psu with min 400w and 80+, bequiet or antec preferredly |

09.14.16 | should cost you around $350 in total, also get yourself a nice ssd and 2tb wd black and you're set (or just recycle the hard drive from your mac) |

09.14.16 | my laptop fan got fucked 3 years ago. i bought a new fan. i still haven't fixed it cuz im afraid ill plug things back horribly wrong. like why even supply the pc with a fan that get's worn out after 2 years? GO DESKTOP!! |
AtomicWaste
09.14.16 | Building a desktop is the easiest thing ever. Follow logical increments (as noted above), make sure you install your OS on an SSD, and you're good to go.
If you want to game, make sure you get a decent video card. Micro Center was selling refurb GTX 660 Ti's about 2 years ago (for about $100) and it still knocks new games like Overwatch out of the park for me. Wish I'd bought 2 to do SLI.
FWIW go with a high-end i5 processor and a motherboard with (literal) room for expansion. I did my first build on a micro ATX and I've been regretting it since that's still my primary PC, but I have little room for expansion (now that I can afford it).
Also, take your time shopping. If you can accumulate parts over a couple months (esp. Black Friday coming up in ~2 months), wait and accumulate. You can get killer deals on newegg and TigerDirect just by waiting for the right day. Also if you have a local Micro Center, they do good deals on processor/mobo combo sales. |

09.14.16 | you should get an SSD to store the OS and then a HDD that can store 2tb or something |

09.14.16 | https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/CRRscf/modest-gaming-build
this looks about your kind of budget and is a good guide on what you should expect, although i would say 16gb of ram is becoming more and more useful these days, add that and peripherals and you should be a fair bit under 1000
but yeah wait for black friday deals |

09.14.16 | i wouldn't buy used or refurbished gpus tbh, had 3 out of 4 failing after like 2 or 3 months (or a refurbished one after literally 3 days recently)
with cpus, ram and to a certain degree mainboards thats a different thing, as those hardly fail as early as a gpu, especially ram and 2nd gen core i onwards cpus with locked multiplier as those were obvs never overclocked
that said paying 3x as much for an i5 6500 that gives you maybe 15% (unnoticeably) more performance than an i5 2500 is pretty dumb, while buying an rx 470 is a good option as those are new (have warranty) AND cheap as fuck considering they're roughly as good as a gtx 970 |

It all depends on if the price is right. The 660 Ti was also basically out of production when I bought it, so the cost/risk was well worth it for a card that's still performing really well years later. You always have to weigh the risk with refurbs. For me, it also helped that I was buying it at Micro Center and had a chance to look at it before I walked away with it (as opposed to mail order).
But for someone new to the process I'd probably agree in recommending to avoid refurbs. |

09.14.16 | I'm planning on building one eventually, and here's a list of builds organized by price range that I've been looking at. Prob not the best but w/e, it gives you an idea and links to Amazon for all the parts (and it's a year old so they're all prob a little cheaper than it advertises).

09.14.16 | actually building a pc right now because a dying psu destroyed half my system (3 hdds, 128gb ssd and a gpu)
gonna be:
xeon e5450 oc 4.3ghz
8gb corsair ddr2-800
asus p5q pro
bequiet 550w
amd rx 470
got the ram, mainboard, a core 2 duo e8500 and half a year old bequiet psu together for 60€, case is gonna be a very fancy looking matt black server case that contained a security camera recording system, 6 of which i pulled out of a container
those xeons are super cheap, the one i got is a little older but you can get quad core xeons similar in performane to 2nd gen core i7s for 20 bucks, 6 core xeons for the same socket for 50 bucks (e.g. 4 core intel xeon e5640, 6 core xeon e5645/x5650)
x58 boards are a little expensive though |

basically anything you do with files, be it virus scanning, loading video games or copying will be much much faster
also in a laptop an ssd has the advantage that there are no moving parts that could be damaged when taking the laptop with you |
