| Asleep's 1 Year at Sput
So been a member of the site for a year now. Though I’ve only become reasonably active in the last few months with a measly 4 reviews and only a few hundred comments to show for my time here, I figured I’d document the best records/genres that the site has guided me towards. This is mainly for my own enjoyment, as well as a thank you to Sput and to hopefully give you guys some recs (though you've probably heard these all before). Cheers guys for the recs and hears to another year. | 1 | | Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Folk, Folk-Punk and other Folk related stuff. I’ve always been into fairly mainstream variants of Folk (Frank Turner being the best example I suppose) but I owe you guys for pointing me towards less obvious stuff. Some of my best finds include Against Me!, Bon Iver (cheers Blushful), AJJ (again, thanks Blushful), Elliott Smith, The Smith Street Band (again thanks Blushful [2]) and The Mountain Goats. Nowadays this is close to the bulk of my listening, along with 3. I’m always open to folky recs, especially some of the more obscure stuff since I’m a tad lacking in that department. The albums of biggest influence are, by a long way, Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and The Microphones The Glow Pt2 (which I only actually discovered yesterday, good timing). The former is catchy as hell with some of the most emotionally engaging vocals and song/album composition I've heard in quite a while, as well as sporting some of the most obscure and hard to decipher lyrical content.. | 2 | | The Microphones The Glow Pt. 2
...that I've come across thats a tonne of fun to try and figure out. The latter elicited the strongest and most inexplicable emotional response from me that a record ever has on first listen. Cant really explain this one, just go listen to it. | 3 | | The Hotelier Home, Like NoPlace Is There
Emo. Hooray for the emo revival, amirite? The Hotelier, JANK (cheers Conmaniac), Snowing (Cheers Con [2]), Empire! Empire! and The World Is a Beautiful Place… all rule (as do many others) and I’m digging some of the older stuff more these days (American Football et al). I know I’ve still got a lot to learn and a tonne of emo (old and new) to sift through in the coming months/years and I can’t wait. Shout outs to Conmaniac for a tonne of recs here and Trebor for his emo list that has helped a bunch. The Hotelier's Home, Like NoPlace Is There is head and shoulders above everything else I've heard; its wonderfully poetic, unbelievably catchy, immediately enjoyable and one of the most emotionally engaging records I've ever heard. Snowing's Fuck Your Emotional Bullshit is probably second, another brilliant emo revival find, followed by American Football for all dem twinkles. | 4 | | Vektor Black Future
Thrash/Death Metal. Way back in my younger years I was hugely into mainstream metal (think Linkin Park, Slipknot, Bullet For My Valentine and System of a Down). Whilst, thankfully, I’ve almost entirely grown out of these (though gotta love a bit of System every now and then) Sput has introduced me to the many many MANY flavours of metal. Thrash and Death are current favourites, been digging Suffocation, Death, Coroner and Vektor recently. Also trying a bit of Black Metal, Industrial and Post/Sludge Metal and loving it. Possibly the vastest genre to try wrap ones head around but it’s been a great experience. This is probably the genre I owe Sput the most for, helping me differentiate between Black, Death, Thrash, Doom etc. which, to an outsider, all sound the same, so ta. Vektor's Black Future is probably the album I'm the most grateful for finding, encouraging me to explore the genre more. | 5 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
Post-Rock. Never would have known that this genre existed if it weren’t for Sput, and holy crap is it a vast genre!? Started with pg.lost, leading to GY!BE, Explosions in the Sky, Russian Circles, a bit of Swans, Maybeshewill and a few others. Still got so much more to cover, so yay. In a similar vain I’ve been digging a bit of math rock these days, Clever Girl, TotorRo and Enemies being some of the better discoveries. Of all of these GY!BE Lift Your Skinny Fists has got to be the most influential for me. It opened my mind to the potential of music and I would have never discovered it if it weren't for the mountains of praise for it on Sput, so cheers. | 6 | | Captain, We're Sinking The Future Is Cancelled
Pop-Punk. This was probably the bulk of my listening when I was younger (stuff like Say Anything, New Found Glory, The Wonder Years and The Story So Far) and whilst this has faltered considerably Sput has helped me keep up the pop punk love. Recent gems include Captain, We’re Sinking, Direct Hit!, The Front Bottoms (if they’re even pop punk) and PUP. Definitely been a resurgence of this in my taste now summer has hit. No records of huge influence here, but I suppose it doesn't get much better than Captain, Were Sinking, so there. | 7 | | Converge Jane Doe
Hardcore/Heavy-ish-stuff. Sput has politely informed me that it can always get louder. Been digging Refused, While She Sleeps, Mongol Horde, Every Time I Die, Converge and a few others thanks to Sput. Refused and Converge are probably the most important to me here, and gotta share that Jane Doe love. | 8 | | Brand New The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
Indie/Alt Rock. I wouldn’t be a true Sputter if I didn’t have something to say about this record. It’s grown into an all time favourite of mine, so cheers for that. Also, shout out to Sowing for praising the crap out of it to the extent that I had to check it. Looking beyond TDAG my eyes have also been opened to the seemingly never-ending plethora of indie rock out there. Radiohead (can’t believe I didn’t check these guys out earlier), Car Seat Headrest, Racing Glaciers and The Dear Hunter are current favourites and can’t wait to see what else is out there. | 9 | | Death Grips Bottomless Pit
Misc. Other random artists that I owe Sput for include Death Grips, Kendrick Lamar, Infected Mushroom, Ghost, Thank You Scientist and David Bowie. Hoping to explore Hip-Hop/Rap a lot more ASAP and to go through the bulk of Bowie’s discog, as well as to check some classic heavy metal, some older rock and some classical eventually. Anyway, if you made it this far through the list thanks a bunch, you are an utter lad. Thanks guys for sharing enthusiasm for music and for recommending all sorts of stuff. You da best. | |

08.14.16 | Sweet list, man! Congratulations on one year, hope to keep seeing you around. And cheers for that initial TotorRo rec and everything that came after. | DigitalSchism
08.14.16 | Solid list. Congrats on the year! Hope the next one treats you well. | BallsDeep
08.14.16 | I see sputnik has trained you well. what sort of stuff were you into before joining just curious? | AsleepInTheBack
08.14.16 | Cheers guys.
@blushful And yeah blushful I owe you for so many recs, cheers man!
@BallsDeep it has indeed haha. My taste before sput was pretty uninformed. Just before joining I suppose I mainly listened to folk and pop punk, my favourite bands being Frank Turner, Say Anything and Streetlight Manifesto. Also still listened to stuff like Linkin Park which has pretty much gone from my taste since exploring through sput.
| BallsDeep
08.14.16 | Yeah i definately owe alot to sputnik too. I've been into metal for years but never really branched out too far - i was just starting to foray into all the subgenres around the time i joined sputnik (about 2 years ago on an old account I forgot the password to lol), it was definitely daunting at first seeing some of my favorite music rated so lowly compared to other stuff i'd never heard of, but when you really approach it with an open mind and check it all out you realize how much you were missing out on and how 2 dimensional a lot of your old music sounds by comparison (not to sound elitist or anything). I'll still listen to things like Linkin Park every now and then too i dont see any shame in that, its the people that only listen to that sort of thing and refuse to branch out that piss me off - but thats their loss i guess. | FullOfSounds
08.14.16 | Congrats! | Artuma
08.14.16 | jam some actual emo for a change | AsleepInTheBack
08.14.16 | @FullOfSounds thanks man!
@BallsDeep Yeah I can relate to that, the majority of the stuff I used to love was rated so low here which hurt when I was really passionate about those bands at the time. But yeah, sput has been eye opening and I'm so glad that it made me branch out as I'd be missing out on my current favourite albums otherwise. I always try nudge people who only listen to that sort of thing towards some other stuff, but it's hard to do so without sounding like a pretentious dick haha | AsleepInTheBack
08.14.16 | I'll happily take some emo recs haha. What do you suggest? | CalculatingInfinity
08.14.16 | Lovely list, deserves a feature. | ashcrash9
08.14.16 | shit dude, I made like no progress whatsoever after my first year here. Yours sure looks like it's been eventful, nice
Lovely list, deserves a feature. [2] | AsleepInTheBack
08.14.16 | Thanks guys, really appreciate it! | MistaCrave
08.14.16 | List is awesome dude, congrats on surviving a year here. | Kurisu
08.14.16 | some good entry level emo shit dude | AsleepInTheBack
08.14.16 | Cheers mista
@kurisu are you saying I've listed good emo (in which case thanks) or are you saying I need to go check some entry level emo, in which case can you suggest what I should be checking? | Artuma
08.14.16 | "I'll happily take some emo recs haha. What do you suggest?"
well, for like really essential midwest emo (since you dig the revival stuff) if you haven't heard: sunny day real estate, cap'n jazz, mineral, penfold, the jim yoshii pile-up, braid, benton falls... | AsleepInTheBack
08.14.16 | Thanks man, I'm a little lacking in some of the original stuff so I appreciate it. I'll give them a listen | SandwichBubble
08.14.16 | Congrats on 1 year! Try Sparklehorse for more catchy folk-rock
and if you're up to it, listen to Simon Finn's 'Pass the Distance' and John Fahey for some classic, top-notch folk. | AsleepInTheBack
08.14.16 | Thanks sandwich, I'll be sure to check them | tacos n stuff
08.14.16 | Congrats dude!
oh and Art knows whats good, check mineral | AngryJohnny
08.14.16 | Yeah this list is cool | ArsMoriendi
08.14.16 | Damn an entire list of Sputcore hmmm
Well, good job making it an entire year | AsleepInTheBack
08.14.16 | Thanks guys. And yeah checked mineral, really solid stuff | tacos n stuff
08.14.16 | After looking over this list again, yeah this is the like the most sputnik list of all time
not a bad thing at all tho | AsleepInTheBack
08.14.16 | Yeah I'll admit its pretty Sputnik, unashamedly haha. As I didn't really have any prior knowledge of most of the genres listed I cherry picked what was most popular. Now I'm a tad more knowledgeable I'm gonna try some more obscure stuff if I can and stray a bit from sputs greatest hits. | Feather
08.14.16 | Holy shit sputcore!
seriously though, if you like all that "folk" stuff PLEASE check out Bright Eyes, you'll probably love it! | rabidfish
08.15.16 | that's some sputcore right there...
| Lord(e)Po)))ts
08.15.16 | list is unacceptable | Feather
08.15.16 | list is beautiful | Conmaniac
08.15.16 | aww no problem dude (: thanks for the shoutout made my night. sick list too | Feather
08.15.16 | tigers on trains [2]
might as well check out republic of wolves while you're at it! | AsleepInTheBack
08.15.16 | Cheers guys, I'll check bright eyes, tigers on trains and republic of wolves asap.
@conmaniac haha no worries man, thanks again for the help
| Flugmorph
08.15.16 | wheres streetlight manifesto tho | BlushfulHippocrene
08.15.16 | Tigers on Trains! [3] I was listening to The Cabs today after a while, too, and thought you might like them. First Incident (EP) is their best IMO, but all their stuff is sweet. It's emo, I think? I'm not good with genres. I hear some math-rock influence, too. | DoofusWainwright
08.15.16 | Keep expressing your individuality on sputnik just be careful not to go full sputcore
Oh | Flugmorph
08.15.16 | lol | AsleepInTheBack
08.15.16 | Discovered streetlight pre-sput, hence it's not on the list.
Also is it really that surprising that the stuff I discovered due to sput is the stuff most popular on the site haha?
And thanks blushful, I'll try check them too! | Flugmorph
08.15.16 | ye its surprising how boring your discovering process must've been | AsleepInTheBack
08.15.16 | Well I checked alot of the best stuff according to the site, but there's also some less sputcore stuff on the list, like infected mushroom, clever girl, totorro and car seat headrest. But I've admitted it's a pretty sput list, so I get you. Got any less sputcore recs? I'll happily take em (: | Flugmorph
08.15.16 | guess you dont mean on this list cause they're not here.
ye i have some stuff for ya.
front line assembly - tactical neural implant
skinny puppy - last rights
neurosis - enemy of the sun | AsleepInTheBack
08.15.16 | Well they're in the descriptions of additional artist of the genre that sput showed me that I dug. And cheers man, I'll give em a look | ashcrash9
08.15.16 | "I was listening to The Cabs today"
oh dude fuck yes
First Incident is their weakest imo but that band's discog is math rock gold | BlushfulHippocrene
08.15.16 | @ashcrash9: fair enough! I've listened to First Incident the most and haven't heard Recur Breath yet, but I've been getting super into Regenerative Landscape. Which would you consider their best? Great band, agreed. | ashcrash9
08.15.16 | Recur Breath is their best and a 5 imo, also probably their biggest grower. Have a blast with that one! | AsleepInTheBack
08.29.16 | To those who recd tigers on trains, you're all awesome, and they rule | Negator
08.29.16 | noice on 4 |
