| Rec me hip-hop/rap
I'm a complete noob when it comes to hip-hop, so rec me some really good shit that will get me into the genre. I've dipped my toe in and 1-4 are the only records that have really stuck out to me so far. 5-7 are recent digs to maybe give some direction to different stuff that I might like?
Anything that's kind of experimental/weird while still being catchy would be great. Maybe influenced by metal/grindcore/psychedelia/jazz? | 1 | | Beastie Boys Paul's Boutique
One of my favorite albums of all time. Never heard anything else quite like it. | 2 | | Kanye West My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
This is the only record of Kanye's that I've really gotten into. Only given his other stuff a cursory listen, but none of it really gripped me as much as MBDTF. | 3 | | Aesop Rock Labor Days
"Daylight" is my favorite song off any of these four records. The rest is pretty good, but not great enough for me to spin this regularly. | 4 | | Death Grips Bottomless Pit
I know, I'm really basic. But this was actually pretty good. Upon first couple listens, I wished the last half was as abrasive as the fist (which, granted, isn't super abrasive), but I actually kind of like the contrast. | 5 | | GridLink Amber Gray
Finally got around to Gridlink recently. Now one of my favorite grindcore bands. | 6 | | Thantifaxath Sacred White Noise
IDK what it is about this record, but I love it. | 7 | | Of Montreal Skeletal Lamping
This is actually one of their best records. It's a shame most of their later stuff is pretty ehhh. Funky, psychedelic, catchy as hell, jarring structural shifts. I love it. | |

08.11.16 | if ur serious about getting into the genre u should prob get out of that "Maybe influenced by metal/grindcore/psychedelia/jazz" mentality
i get that it helps u get into the genre, but many ppl on this site never get out of that 'hip hop for ppl who dont listen to hip hop' rabbit hole. peep these albums, spans a bunch of different regions and eras to help u appreciate the genre

08.11.16 | the problem is venturing outside that bubble, which most ppl dont do. u got all these guitar music heads hailing those albums as the best ever and shit on other (usually more modern/mainstream) types of hip hop. rather they just cut out the middle man and get into some real shit from the jump
it's like non dm fans who listen to like opeth or maybe in flames to get into dm but then just stop there and call them the best of the genre. almost nobody does that tho, most ppl progress from their gateways...but not in hip hop it seems | Typhoon24
08.11.16 | kool keith is pretty experimental, so chexk out dr octagon | AlexKzillion
