07.18.16 | decent list overall. Goodfellas, Saving Private Ryan, Usual Suspects should be higher, imo. Also missing some gems like The Prestige, This is Spinal Tap, Tombstone, and Pulp muthafuckin Fiction.
Also: Kubrick is overrated. FMJ was good. But Clockwork Orange & Eyes Wide Shut were stupid excuses for violence and smut, 2001 was alright but dragged on for fucking ever, and The Shining is so goddamn overrated. |

Intothepit
07.18.16 | Pretty pleb list |
porcupinetheater
07.18.16 | Clockwork Orange is just really obvious and on the nose to the point that it's overly-simplistic.
But then, so is Full Metal Jacket. So is Paths of Glory. So is Dr. Strangelove (although that one needs to be for the satire to really work as brilliantly as it does). Kubrick's reputation for inscrutability and obfuscation in intent is really only because of 2001 and Eyes Wide Shut. |
EyesWideShut
07.18.16 | props for T2, Die Hard, and The Thing..

Rik VII
07.18.16 | haven't seen Paths of Glory and Dr. Strangelove yet but so far I'd definitely say you're right. |
guitarded_chuck
07.18.16 | you could say the same thing about pretty much any film because simplicity is entirely subjective and personal
the fact the user above is completely off the mark re: clockwork orange suggests its not as simplistic as you say though
anyway a clockwork orange is good but kubrick's best films are 2001, barry lyndon, and dr. strangelove |
insanedrexl1
07.18.16 | Alfred Hitchcock's movies
The Good The Bad And The Ugly
Once Upon A Time In The West
|
porcupinetheater
07.18.16 | I wasn't necessarily saying simplicity is a negative, just that I feel people generally say Kubrick movies are more complex and difficult than they really are because of a relatively small portion of his filmography.
Like, Clockwork Orange's message and means of delivering that message are straightforward to the point of it being over-the-top (even if the ambiguity of the final shot complicates the morality a little bit).
And add The Killing to your best-of list, and I'm right there with you |
guitarded_chuck
07.18.16 | yeh i dunno the only really complex film is 2001, the beauty in the rest of them is in the cinematography, directing, attention to detail
the novel ending is less ambiguous if you care to read it / havent yet (its a fun read what with the odd language too) |

curious why you disliked Inception? I thought it was great in the sense that it was fresh, and really nothing else quite like it. the ambitiousness makes up for the fact that Nolan may have tried to make it more complicated for the sake of seeming more "twisty" but all in all, I loved that movie, even though I do think it's slightly overrated.
I'd say The Prestige is Nolan's best film to date, even though most people would obviously say Dark Knight or Inception. Interstellar was really good, too, if you can suspend disbelief and look past a few plot holes. |

tectactoe
07.18.16 | ^yeah, I feel you.
the only thing that bothered me was... (possible spoilers?) like, if he was in the tesseract where time was a tangible dimension, and he was sending himself the message "STAY", he could clearly see that the message STAY was not enough to actually get himself to stay, why wouldn't he make a more obvious message. Idk if that makes sense. Also I've always wondered why the "aliens" or whomever would bother putting him in that tesseract after he went through the black hole. like why would these randos give a fuck about him and his kids. Maybe that had to do with the whole "love transcends dimensions" aspect.
but those are just nitpicks. aside from that, I loved the movie and enjoyed the concept. |

porcupinetheater
07.18.16 | 28 Days rules, hard, but 28 Weeks Later is one of the few movies where the plot holes make it almost unwatchable.
Like, everything that happens is so forced to make it bigger and higher stakes that nothing that happens makes any logical sense at all. Like, let's not guard the patient that holds the key to understanding this virus in any capacity whatsoever, but give her janitor husband unlimited access to the most security sensitive room in the fucking building.
Also, the way it forces zombie dad into almost every scene with the kids gets ridiculous the first five times it happens. |

07.18.16 | "the visuals were amazing tho, best part of the movie by far for me"
also agree, the visuals were awesome. and I really liked how he went with the whole "you can't hear anything in space" thing. like when Mann gets sucked through the airlock and it explodes - no sound, no music, just silence. that was awesome. really liked the part when they had to lock on their ship to the station while it was spinning, too. |

07.19.16 | I loved interstellar until I watched the martian the next day |
Rowhaus
07.19.16 | I thought The Martian was pretty terrible tbh. Matt Damon can't act and it was basically 2+ hours of a mediocre actor sitting in front of a webcam telling the audience about events we literally just saw one minute prior. Definitely not for me. Having said that, I wasn't crazy about Interstellar either, even if I preferred it to The Martian. |
tectactoe
07.19.16 | Watched The Dark Knight again list night, been a few years since I've seen it. I certainly love that movie but I do think it's slightly overrated, I'd honestly put The Prestige, Inception, and Interstellar over that as far as Nolan films go. Bale has better acting in the Prestige, too. Bale made a really good Bruce Wayne but his "Batman" left a little to be desired, imo. |
Rowhaus
07.19.16 | It's definitely overrated. Some people tote it as one of the greatest movies ever made. I definitely don't think it's THAT good, but I still love it. Possibly my favorite superhero movie. Slightly overrated (it's not a top 5 movie of ALL TIME like IMDb shows lol) but still amazing. Rises is a good movie but holy fuck it's way too long. 07.21.16 | In all seriousness, am I the only one who has a hard time getting into movies before 1960-ish? Try branching out a bit, get into some of the really bleak 50s noir (Kiss Me Deadly, In a Lonely Place)
Dip your toe in some of Preston Sturges' stuff for great universal comedy (The Palm Beach Story, especially, and that one's really short, as well).
Go even further back into silent films, a lot of which were insanely inventive and freewheeling in a way that the mechanics of sound put the kabosh on for awhile (Sunrise, A Page of Madness, Pandora's Box).
Look into some emergent world cinema - French Poetic realism was especially beautiful, emotional, tragic, funny (Port of Shadows, The Rules of the Game, Children of Paradise - one of the greatest films ever made, hands down).
If you're bothered by the heightened performance aspects, check out some Italian Neorealism, incredibly grounded and a huge direct influence on post-60s cinema (Bicycle Thieves, Rome Open City)
50s European and Japanese film saw some of the greatest, most beautiful, powerful, imposing, frightening films ever made (The Wages of Fear, Ugetsu, Ikiru, Rififi, Ashes and Diamonds).
Basically, just do some more digging. Pre 60s cinema was just as diverse as it is now. |
