Top 30 Favourite British Comedy Shows
30Game Over
Crimes Against Reality

Game On

Comedy based around three childhood friends who have grown into very different adults flat sharing together.
29The Derek Trucks Band
Songlines

Derek

Gervais again, this is really odd though - he plays a mentally handicapped man and the show is set in a nursing home. Yes, thar's a message and that gets in the way of the humour. Can make you squirm at times.
28Donkeyboy
Silver Moon

Drop the Dead Donkey

Satire of journalists, again one I haven't watched in years.
27Only A Mother
Feral Chickens

Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em

If you can't do a decent 'Frank Spencer' then you are not worthy of breath.
26Phoenix
It's Never Been Like That

Phoenix Nights

Northern comedy. You'll either love it or hate it. Actually scrap that I neither love or hate it, it's pretty good is all.
25Extra Life
Dream Seeds

Extras

How do you follow up The Office? You poke fun at your newfound celebrity as best you can. A bit patchy.
24Suicide Note
You're Not Looking So Good

The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin

Another classic comedy, a man is having a mid life crisis and dreams of escape and eventually fakes his death. Hey you guessed it, he returns in disguise.
23The Inbetween Days
Stranger Than Strangers

The Inbetweeners

Yo someone has taken the term 'schoolboy humour' literally.
22Beanbag
welladjusted

Mr Bean

Almost a silent comedy, apparently this is shown in absolutely every corner of the globe and is why the English are seen as such a bunch of dweebs.
21Thy Mighty Contract
Thy Mighty Contract

The Mighty Boosh

This is the most studenty comedy of all time. An acquired taste it's fair to say but if it hits your sweet spot you'll love it. I haven't watched an episode in ages but for a while I was pretty hooked on it.
20The Traditional Fools
The Traditional Fools

Only Fools and Horses

Meh for many the pinnacle, I will still watch this and there are some classic episodes but overall these are just too darn familiar now. Everyone loves David Jason though of course.
19Gang Starr
Daily Operation

Da Ali G Show

Before the movies there was this. The beginning of Borat and Bruno and some really uncomfortable interviews with Ali. It has dated a lot but deserves respeck.
18Black Wing
...Is Doomed

Green Wing

Set in a hospital this is hardly Scrubs (for me a good thing) and its pretty surreal although a bit too try hard on the production style at times. Birdlike face woman from Black Books is fire again.
17Thee Plague of Gentlemen
Thee Plague of Gentlemen

The League of Gentlemen

Started so well working as a sketch show only all the characters were in the shared geography of a village. Later it would become more of a surreal drama and lost me a bit but you'd have to concede it's always been unique at the very least.
16Bottom Feeder
Grinding Teeth

Bottom

The most slapstick choice on the entire list, only the UK could make such a prosaic setup work so well. Two losers up to not much get into scrapes and then go all Tom and Jerry on each other's asses.
15Army Of Flying Robots
Life Is Cheap

Dad's Army

An oldie but a goody, early series were shot in black and white, Sergeant Wilson remains one of the greatest comedy characters of all time...'are you sure that's entirely wise, Sir?'
14PRIME MINISTERS
TAKE A RIDE

Yes, Minister

Satire of the UK political system set in a fictional Department of Administrative Affairs. Mostly focuses on the tug of war between an MP and his Permanent Secretary.
13Whitehouse
Great White Death

The Mary Whitehouse Experience

The ultimate cult sketch show, this was essential viewing when I was growing up. It started as a TV version of a radio show but added more and more sketches as it went on with character like Mr Strange the oddball who loved sour milk.
12Out Crowd
Just Us

The IT Crowd

More losers trapped in a dead end scenario (see Father Ted, Black Books, Red Dwarf, etc) this time the 'IT basement' every organisation seems to have. They nail the main nerd types in Roy, Moss and the goth is the printer room.
11Monty Python
Another Monty Python Record

Monty Python's Flying Circus

The hipsters choice it appears as its had a massive resurgence in popularity. The overall package is greater than the sum of the parts but when you combine the sketches with the music and the animations it's like a joyous time machine.
10The Alan Parsons Project
Turn of a Friendly Card

Alan Partridge (mixed shows)

Coogan's only truly great creation (oh, feel the burn) remains a little hit and miss but when the writing quality is kept high this is one of the most quotable shows of all time.
9Black Book Lodge
Entering Another Measure

Black Books

Dylan Moran, Bill Bailey and the woman with the birdlike face all in one place? Oh yes.
8The Brass
Homosapien

Brass Eye

Parody current affairs show that hoodwinked celebs with relish. Chris Morris was perfect as the show's (w)anchor.
7Father John Misty
Fear Fun

Father Ted

Not always fall off your chair funny but it has that Brit comedy way of being so comforting to watch. Best when at its most surreal.
6Office
Q&A

The Office

I'll hold my hands up and admit I haven't watched a whole episode of the US version yet that is always referred to as being better. If it's better than this it must be incredible because this is near flawless.
5Ocean Towers
Distractions

Fawlty Towers

An undisputed classic that I'm guessing nearly everyone with any interest in comedy shows has watched at least one episode of. Great physical acting in this, you wouldn't call it slapstick...it's better than that.
4Mummy the Peepshow
This is Egg Speaking...

Peep Show

The king of UK cringe comedies that even trumps the original classic (The Office). Too dark/depressing for some but I can take it. Hopefully you never relate to this show too much.
3Blackalicious
The Craft

Blackadder

Just look at the cast of this thing. Near every major player in British comedy in the era turns up and Rowan Atkinson is way funnier as Blackadder than Bean.
2Pretty Ricky
Late Night Special

The Ricky Gervais Show

Ok it's just a podcast with added animations...but the combination is genius. This show has made me laugh more than any other in the last five years. Catch Pilkington before he turned into a living breathing meme.
1Killer Dwarfs
Stand Tall [Remastered]

Red Dwarf

Yes the nostalgia is just too strong. Of course it has dated, the comedy more than anything else, but this remains not only the most creative British comedy of all time but also the best sci fi show of all time.
