DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | On the last list people were doubting the Doof watches comedy/is equipped with laughing apparatus.
Well here's a list of Brit comedies.
I'll be surprised if anyone else on the site has watched more than 15 of these |
Mort.
06.08.16 | Ive watched more than 15 of these man
Tight list. I personally adore green wing, would put it much higher. Brass eye needs a rewatch from me |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | Good to hear Mort, you must love your comedies
Take the ranking with a pinch of salt after the top 12 or so
Which haven't you watched? Would be interested how 13 would stand up by today's standards |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | What do you think of my no 1 / no 2 and what would you put at 1 and 2? |
Mort.
06.08.16 | Oh man british comedy is one of my loves, gonna work through what i havent seen on this list
Havent seen 13 - 17
Nor 24, 26, 27, 28 or 30 |
Sinternet
06.08.16 | Definitely seen at least half of these, all of the ones i've seen rule
No Young Ones though? Definitely one of my favourites. Quite a fan of Porridge too. |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | I'd guess you'll love at least two or three of those shows, surprised you've not watched League of Gentlemen considering what you have watched. That, Bottom and Mary Whitehoyse would be my picks to start on |
zakalwe
06.08.16 | Brass Eye.
What a classic, I think Chris Morris is just bang on everytime. Four Lions is a true modern classic.
List needs Nathan Barley. |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | Sint I've never seen much Young Ones. Porridge is good, never sought out to watch it all though |
Mort.
06.08.16 | Red dwarf has aged very well although i havent sunk enough time into it to love it or anything. Still rate it highly tho. The ricky gervais show is excellent although I prefer many others on here to it. I think its format doesnt help things.
My 1 would be Green Wing. The absurdity tends to be quite clever, the characters are all hilarious and memorable (especially stephen mangan as the over the top egotistical anaesthetist), but first and foremost the quick pace editing and style is just perfect to me, especialy how they work music into the editing so well, it has one of my fav soundtracks of all time (pretty sure it won an award or 2) Not only that but i find it genuinely affecting at certain bits.
|
Mort.
06.08.16 | My number 2 would probably be peep show just because it hits the mark consistnently and is just plain clever and hilarious
Yeah nathan barley and the young ones are both sick |
Pheromone
06.08.16 | 7 is 1 |
Pheromone
06.08.16 | 8 is 2 |
zakalwe
06.08.16 | Regarding The Mary Whitehouse Experience this clip is the funniest thing I've ever seen on TV.
At the time I was crying, tears fucking streaming down my face. I've never laughed as much from something on TV.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gUgmKezH550
I guess you had to be there. :D |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | Zak I'll check the clip later can't wait lol - all I know is that show was unmissable back in the day |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | Ov stay well clear of 2, his Hyena laughing is constant
The Pilkington monologues are just total genius as far as I'm concerned though |
zakalwe
06.08.16 | List needs spaced |
Pheromone
06.08.16 | Remember a few years back my morning routine consisted of waking up and watching a lot of the old shit on GOLD. Fawlty Towers, Porridge, Allo Allo. Classics
Auf Wiedersehen, Pet deserves a mention too, underrated that one. |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | I never caught Spaced but I quite like Frost and Pegg so should really
Allo Allo is one that as a kid I wouldn't immediately switch the channel with but if it's still on after 15 minutes I'd get restless
Worst Brit comedies? Miranda, Catherine Tate show, outnumbered, gimme gimme gimme, Mrs browns boys...probably hundreds |
Pheromone
06.08.16 | Allo Allo was my favourite growing up, parents would watch it constantly.
For real though, have you ever seen Auf Wiedersehen, that's properly worth a shout for my top 10 brit comedies |
zakalwe
06.08.16 | List needs The Royale Family |
Sinternet
06.08.16 | A few other series i quite enjoy are:
The vicar of dibley
Goodnight sweetheart
The good life
The first couple of seasons of my family were decent
The thin blue line
The thick of it
Spaced
Jeeves and wooster
The goodies
Damn there are so many good ones |
Sinternet
06.08.16 | Definitely get on the young ones doof, anything with rik mayall is worth watching |
Sinternet
06.08.16 | One i can't stand though is are you being served, my parents watch it religiously |
Pheromone
06.08.16 | the thin blue line is a classic, forgot that one - definitely a top 10'er |
zakalwe
06.08.16 | Goodnight Sweetheart! Fucking hell. |
zakalwe
06.08.16 | List needs Game On |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | Never liked the Royale Family or Gavin & Stacey or the ilk
Was the Thin Blue Line that great? Thought it was a bit like the Brittas Empire in being one of my favourite comedy actors slumming it a bit in something that's dated a lot
Vicar of Dib, Keeping up appearances, one foot in the grave, my family, 2.4 children, men behaving badly, Ab Fab, the good life...all are ok but all feel a bit safe/middle of the road |
Shemson
06.08.16 | I've seen pretty much of all of these man great list. If you haven't seen it though you HAVE to see Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. It has Richard Ayoade and Matt Berry from The IT Crowd and Noel Fielding and Julian Barrett from the Boosh in an episode each as well. Only one series was ever made and its a spoof on 80s Sci-Fi. Must-watch British comedy! |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | Game On I was toying with including - probably should have axed Harry Enfield.
Actually I'll change it later |
Shemson
06.08.16 | The Fast Show > Harry Endfield |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | Shem I've seen a few eps of GM's Darkspace, it seemed an all out parody and I didn't get it but then it took the Boosh a while to click |
Shemson
06.08.16 | It's totally weird and clips wouldn't really make sense. They only ever made six episodes so it's not a big investment of your time but I'd say for sure if you don't love the first two episodes you can stop watching. It's like a smarter Boosh IMO and the switch between commentary and actual content works perfectly. |
zakalwe
06.08.16 | List needs Toast of London.
Fucking hell, we've made some classic comedies thinking about it. |
Shemson
06.08.16 | I've been meaning to check that Zak, it's Matt Berry playing a failed actor right?
And yes we rule at comedy. I think the main reason is we don't try and churn out loads of episodes every year. Just six per season usually of top quality material. |
zakalwe
06.08.16 | Toast is definitely the best of the last few years. Some proper belly laughs to be had but still random, off the wall and creative.
List needs snuff box. |
Rowan5215
06.08.16 | Darkspace is absolutely ridiculous, amazing in parts but I prefer the Boosh |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | Snuff Box? That's one I've not heard of at all |
smaugman
06.08.16 | 11 is 1 |
Shemson
06.08.16 | Haha Zak are we just saying the list needs to include everything Berry has ever done?
I kind of agree Rowan, Boosh is probably more consistent (definitely the first two seasons and the first live show) but I fell out of love with it after I went to their second and final live tour because it was awful and I felt ripped off. Darkplace hits higher peaks too IMO because Dean Lerner is such a great character so cleverly written. |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | I think Red Dwarf is the ultimate 'male buddy' setup without being obvious about it, and I love the idea that to keep you sane a super computer would pair the last living human with a hologram version of not his dream woman nor his best mate...but a mild irritant and near polar opposite character from your life. The sci fi ideas they used could have been stretched into 500 Hollywood sci fi movies, some classic ideas |
zakalwe
06.08.16 | One I've never got on with is the IT crowd which is surprising because Morris was involved with that.
|
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | Smaug confirmed first hipster |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | It took me watching the entire first season before I finally started to really enjoy the IT Crowd
And I sort of work in IT (I have actually worked in an IT department located in a basement smh)
The style seems really heavy handed and old fashioned at first but it grows on you. Some great episodes - 'I'm disabled..."we love willy's" and 'ohhhh, ohhhh - my tits are on fire. Woahh, woaaahh' |
Shemson
06.08.16 | Yeah Morris is awesome. List also needs 'The Day Today'. |
Rowan5215
06.08.16 | Matt Berry is a modern legend |
zakalwe
06.08.16 | Matts done some blinding albums as well. |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | Have they been added to the sputabase? |
Mort.
06.08.16 | Hes in a three trapped tigers vid as well
Gavin and stacey hds a soft spot in my heart for easily digestible good natured mush |
rabidfish
06.08.16 | Peep show higher than the IT crowd?
...no |
Shemson
06.08.16 | Haha just seen Zak recced Nathan Barley too! Very nearly had 15peter20 as my username here but then people who didn't know would've thought I was called Peter. |
zakalwe
06.08.16 | 15peter20 would've been well weapon!!!
Yeah doof a few of matts albums are listed. His last one (which isn't) is an instrumental prog mind fuck. It's worth a listen. |
Alastor
06.08.16 | I really wish there was a Blackadder edition without laughing track. |
TheCharmingMan
06.08.16 | I've seen most of the US Office and the entire UK Office series, and the US cannot even touch the UK version. |
Conmaniac
06.08.16 | Peep show is def the best but Ali G comes close |
zakalwe
06.08.16 | List needs Saxondale |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | Saxondale was pretty good but I only watched a few episodes in the end |
zakalwe
06.08.16 | I get more like Tommy by the day. Underrated. |
tempest--
06.08.16 | seen maybe about a dozen of these, and they're mostly fantastic. always disappointed when the "best TV" lists on this site are filled with yank shite. |
zakalwe
06.08.16 | Good lad lloyd.
Watch Toast of London if you haven't. Funny as fuck. |
ZombieParty
06.08.16 | list needs Nathan Barley [2] |
Avagantamos
06.08.16 | only seen 5, 6, and a bit of 3 and 11
which on the list are the best without laugh tracks? |
DoofusWainwright
06.08.16 | Most stuff post 2000 on the list won't have a laugh track I guess? I forget which do and which don't, occasionally a laugh track can be pretty distracting
Also switched the Harry Enfield pick for Game On for obscurity's sake even though I haven't watched it since it first aired in the 90's |
Egarran
06.08.16 | Good list.
Green Wing is one of my favourites as well.
Blackadder is a must.
Then Black Books & Red Dwarf. Hardly a day goes by without quoting one of these.
But it still feels like Monty Python towers over all. |
Kalopsia
06.09.16 | No Spaced
list is invalid
|
DoofusWainwright
07.18.17 | Spaced is a bit shit |
anat
07.18.17 | I love Black Books. I'd have The Office and Peep Show as hard 1 and 2, only show I think you're missing is The Thick Of It. |
DoofusWainwright
07.18.17 | Thanks, I've heard a lot of good things about it, I'll hunt some episodes down |
butcherboy
07.18.17 | Black books, red dwarf, blackadder, fawlty.. I'll check a bunch of these.. |
Demon of the Fall
07.18.17 | Kudos for 1.
In fact 1, 4, 6, 7, 10, 12, 16, 17 etc. Good list. |
Demon of the Fall
07.18.17 | Needs more Young Ones though... just noticed. |
DoofusWainwright
07.18.17 | Yeah, that's one I missed. Seen loads of clips from it of course, just never sat down and watched an episode. |
Mort.
07.18.17 | gr8 bump, rewatching black books at the moment. Watching it right this very moment in fact |
AsleepInTheBack
07.18.17 | Nice to see some love for 9, one of my personal favourites. So are 1, 3, 5, 12 and 20 actually |
smaugman
07.18.17 | 11 is always 1 |
smaugman
07.18.17 | Whoops this is an old list |
Demon of the Fall
07.18.17 | So it is... didn't realise either.
I must say, one criticism (to balance out my praise a little), The Mighty Boosh sucks, weirdness for weirdness sake, in fact everything Noel Fielding does is so annoying (IT Crowd being the exception, but he's not as integral to that show). |
Egarran
07.18.17 | Her name is Tamsin Greig
Her name is Tamsin Greig
Her name is Tamsin Greig |
butcherboy
07.18.17 | agreed with Sunlight, Noel Fielding more or less represents the cosmetic surface of what makes a surreal comic.. Boosh did have some great moments, but I find him a hanger-on more than anything.. |
Egarran
07.18.17 | How dare you speak to me of the crunch? |
DoofusWainwright
07.18.17 | Haha, sorry Egarran, she's good yeah, should pay her the respect of learning her name |
Egarran
07.18.17 | Saw her first time in Green Wing, where she's a bit boring
Sue White, though. What a woman. |
DeadPulse
11.30.18 | Great list, decent taste. I would add these:
Spaced
Flowers
Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace
Toast of London
Snuff Box
Shameless
|
Coast
11.30.18 | Porridge |
DoofDoof
11.30.18 | I updated/expanded this on RYM and yeah Porridge made the cut |
Krvst
11.30.18 | List has so many golden shows on it, no love for the thick of it? Brass eye has weirdly become more relevant now than ever |
Demon of the Fall
11.30.18 | I've never seen Spaced, not even sure what it is... am I strange? Looking at DeadPulse's list I'm not sure what Snuff Box is either.
Has Inside No.9 been said yet? I'll give that one a 'honourable mention' for my non-existent list, must admit the episodes do vary in quality a fair amount. |
DoofDoof
11.30.18 | You couldn’t release Brass Eye now as sensationalism is the norm
Don’t think I ever watched The Thick of It, maybe an episode? - will keep an eye out for it |
Cimnele
11.30.18 | good list, here's me top three
1. this morning with richard not judy
2. the thick of it
3. the young ones |
Coast
11.30.18 | Fletch-ER! Ronnie Barker superb in Porridge. The 2 Ronnies also. Maybe Fawlty Towers fave. Also loved The Goodies, Bless This House and Little Britain. |
Egarran
11.30.18 | It's scary how relevant Yes, Minister still is. Not much has changed in the political class. |
Sinternet
11.30.18 | this was a good thread
also we got peep show but no one mentioned that mitchell and webb look? probably my favourite sketch show ever. armstrong and miller also had a few classic scenes |
Winesburgohio
11.30.18 | Brasseye is eternal
really fuck with Fleabag |
Kalopsia
11.30.18 | Coupling |
Egarran
12.01.18 | "I've never seen Spaced, not even sure what it is... am I strange? "
Yes, and that's just one of the reasons. But seriously, it's a great show if you like Simon Pegg stuff. |
zakalwe
12.01.18 | Brit comedy from 60s-early 00s was fucking unbelievable then it all went shite cos we weren’t allowed to take the piss which is what every Brit worth their salt does; constantly no matter what else. |
Rowan5215
12.01.18 | the lack of The Thick of It love in this thread is bewildering |
Zig
12.01.18 | The Office UK is fine, I like the US remake better.
Blackadder and Monty Python are classics. |
