| My Great Music Stories | 1 | | David Bowie The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust...
First ever album I gave to a girl in an attempt to impress her. A week later she told me she really liked it.
"Oh good. What was your favourite song?"
*pause* "Let's Dance'."
And I still haven't got the album back. | 2 | | Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds The Firstborn Is Dead
'This album saved my life' - we've all heard that story before. However mine is a little more literal.
I worked at a fine dining restaurant for a year. Night shifts regularly finished at 2 in the morning. I would then drive home through bushland, sharing the road with wombats, deer, kangaroo and foxes. However the biggest danger was falling asleep at the wheel.
To avoid this I enlisted the services of Nicholas Edward Cave at his Gothic blues best. How could I fall asleep when 'Tupelo' was rupturing my ears? Or when the Bad Seeds were jamming the one-chord fury of 'Wanted Man' into oblivion? Or when I was crawling through the scrub to the sound of 'Blind Lemon Jefferson' and it felt like I was being watched? | 3 | | Green Day American Idiot
I got my first exposure to the harsh realities of Sputnik when I posted a review describing this as "the best album of its decade". The roasting was very hurtful. However, without it, I would have been weaned on nothing more than the empty flattery of my sport reporting website. | 4 | | Godspeed You! Black Emperor Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
I was staying at my grandfather's house for the week. He's real deaf so I kept any music I played in the living room to certain guidelines: slow, quiet, beautiful and symphonic were all big buzzwords.
Obviously 'Skinny Fists' - long sections of static and industrial layers notwithstanding - would be getting some rotation when he was around. But he didn't just tolerate 'Skinny Fists'; he was transfixed by it. He listened to the first 15 minutes of 'Storm' over and over and said it was one of the most beautiful pieces of music he'd ever heard. At the end of the week I left him the album, which had taken me a bit over a month to find. He's still got it and he still listens to it. | |
