An Atomic 15 For '15

As late as I am to the party on a top of the pops for 2015, I've finally made it. Last year I let my ambition get the better of me, started a big ol' blog entry (a la Sowing's End of the Year Awards, though far less good humored and well-intended), and still have it sitting as a draft in the Sput blog pool, attracting digital ants and growing digital fungus. Though this list, in the stead of a more ambitious blog, may lack photos of musicians and celebrities paired with obnoxious internet slang commentary (I Can Haz Cheezburger?), I assure you that the generic "list is shit lol buttz" comment will release just a little less dopamine than it would on the blog post. That said, I encourage you to comment and ask about any of the entries here, and, given the time to formulate a response, we can have a little bit of a published dialog in lieu of an esoteric "know-all-be-all" description. However, I will not publish "list is shit lol buttz." It's been a busy as hell 2015 (I got engaged, bought a house, and got a new job - woohoo!) so let's bid it farewell and look onto the next one with promises of new Orbs, new Tool, and maybe even a Metalica album worse than Lulu?

9Strawberry Girls
American Graffiti

@apokolypz - I'm a sucker for great groove and solid melody, and Strawberry Girls basically pack in the same punch they brewed up in their last outing (which was outstanding). There's this little dab of funk and swing that they maintain (probably out of their lineage sprouting off from DGD), and I really like that. This felt like it had a little more filler than French Ghetto for some reason, but it's a similar blend of chaos and air with bright 'n' shiny leads, which is just a recipe for my drool.

Monobody

Probably the best, freshest jazz rock/prog album this year. Listen: https://nakedallyrecords.bandcamp.com/album/monobody (No, seriously, listen to it!)
4Sufjan Stevens
Carrie and Lowell

There's not much to say for this album that I haven't already said in other places, but its raw honesty, sensory projections, and ability to paint a picture and allow the listener to come to their own conclusions without heavy-handed narration makes Carrie and Lowell another installation of perfection from Sufjan.
3David Maxim Micic
ECO

David's latest installment (just after EGO) tackles a little more of his EDM influences. Close in scope to the dance/party metal of Devin Townsend's Addicted, though I probably favor ECO in a head-to-head comparison.
2Kendrick Lamar
To Pimp a Butterfly

So all-encompassing, expressive, intuitive, and catchy, it could easily also be my number 1 album. "To Pimp a Butterfly" is an album full of a history continuing to be written. It's a part of its own zeitgeist and an amazingly fluid amalgam of black culture and music.
1The Dear Hunter
Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise

Simply my most enjoyed album of the year. I still listen to it frequently, and yes, I still jam "King of Swords" like it's nobody's business.
